Title: Who will you support in the World Cup?
Post by: Sidney on October 17, 2013, 10:49:55 AM
ENGLAND for me.

It would be amazing for our domestic game if we can do it.

With Stevie and Lamps bossing the centre, Jags and Joles shutting out opposition attacks, and Roo-mania rampant, we'll be living it up in Rio like Ronnie Biggs.

I know all four home nations will be getting behind our British Isles representatives.

England. England win = domestic tranquility. England lose = several days of thunder. Losing to Germany in the last World Cup = Hurricane Katrina.

What would you class as our domestic game?

There is no league in this country. They're not my words, but the words of the man who managed the Irish international team from 2008 to 2013.

I hope Brazil win it on home soil. I like all the South American teams though. Easily the most entertaining teams to watch at every world cup. At the last world cup I couldn't get enough of watching Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It's refreshing to see the beautiful game as it was intended.

Those that have a problem with Roy' Hodgson are the real racists and trivialise a problem that England, more than any other European country, has been to the forefront of dealing with.

Why would you not support your nearest participating neighbours?

It's no different to, say, a Roscommon person supporting Mayo, or a Limerick person supporting Clare in an All-Ireland final.

I'm glad England are there. The inevitable meltdown and fallout is great entertainment....must be what it's like for other counties looking at Mayo... :P

Seriously though, England are going to get destroyed out there. I'll be on my hands and knees hoping we get drawn in same group as England on 23rd February for Euro 2016.

England,Ireland,Slovenia,Armenia,Iceland and Gibraltar(going to be in it) would be a lovely group with some cracking away trips.

For want of a better work I would "support" Argentina usually in the WCs. Not too pushed who wins it as long as Holland don't. Arrogant arrogant nation.

Don't despise England like many on this island. Actually like many of their players .

Think it would be great if Argentina won in Brazil.

Usually look out for the team that the United lads are playing for so Mexico and Belgium will be of interest. England is always a soap opera though their limitations may actually be a strength (they can't really believe they'll win it this time, surely?).

English people are usually very supportive of Ireland when England are not playing. Clare people generally cheer for Limerick if Clare are not playing, even though Limerick is trying to invade it. Surely you'd cheer for Kilkenny given that Waterford continue to try to invade Kilkenny's sovereign territory, even if out of guilt?

I love the World Cup. Always have. Even when I was jaded of soccer, I still loved watching the big international tournaments, and the World Cup reminds me of summer evenings watching Rossi, Zico, Platini, Rummenige, Mattheus, Robson, Socrates, Zoff and hundreds of others.

I normally prefer when Ireland are not involved because I don't get nervous about their games, so I'll be looking forward to Brazil hugely.

As with most soccer fans, I have a soft spot for Brazil, when they are expressing themselves. During the mid 90s especially, they were turned into a dour, professional type unit and the 1994 world cup winners were very dull. I'll be hoping they do well, as the tournament will be all the better for it.

I also always have a soft spot for Italy, despite the fact that they are almost the anti-Brazil in terms of approach sometimes. I still love watching the Azzuri jerseys, that anthem and their passion for the game.

I will also hope Argentina do well, along with a lot of Irish people it seems. I hope it's not a falklands thing :D

Finally, I would love England to do well as well. I like the English players, most of them anyway, and I think their expectation level will be low this time. Of course I hate the S*n type media who will be insufferable, but most English people I know and work with are A1. I hope they have a great tournament.

Glad England qualified and that the Bogside Inn has reopened as its always decked in the colours of England's opponents which is good craic. More interest with England there, the usual build up, then balls up.

Will be interesting to see how Belgium get on. Would be surprised if the Geeeeeeeeeeemans dont win it. Usually come close with teams not near the same level as what they have at their disposal now.

Will be supporting whatever country Saurez plays for

Lovely goal, but should be called a 7 pass goal rather than a 25 pass goal. For the first 18 passes they went precisely nowhere.

Apart from the excitement of some Ireland games I'm still waiting on a World Cup to surpass 82 and 86.

I hope England do well but they usually struggle to keep the ball and the game has changed a lot since the 80's and 90's when England were serious contenders at these tournaments(could well have won in '90 and'96).

I hope the ball is better this time too. The Jabulani seemed to be a problem in South Africa and a lot of the top players flopped. The Brazuca will be unveiled soon and hopefully they won't try to be too clever with it.

Germany 0 England 0. Germany to win 9-8 on pens
Brazil 5 Argentina 4

Final

Brazil 4 Germany 1

3/4 play-off

Argentina 6 England 0

Tournament darlings: Iceland or Iran

Tournament villains: Ecuador

Tournament flops: Belgium

Top scorer: Suarez

I support Brazil as always, plus hope Holland do well, Like to see england to progress a bit to built up false hopes and the bandwagon rolling, only for it to come crumbling down round the last 8/semi on the biggest nite in fball since 1966, Am just a sadist to inflict football pain on those unsuspecting england football fans who lose the run of themselves before the world cup lol

Argentina seriously underachieved the past two tournaments (a too cautious coach in Germany, and a guy who couldn't coach last time out).  If they can get their act together, they'll take it.

I thought they played super football in 06, but met the Germans in the Quarter finals and lost on pens. The last WC, they were poor. Messi has yet to shine in a World Cup, next year at 27 he should click and deliver.

Argies were unlucky in Germany, played some great stuff and narrowly lost to the Krauts. South African WC was f**king shite, a bunch of Dutch hatchet men disgracing the memory of Cruyff and VanBasten nearly won it. T'was scutter.

I used to enjoy the English falling flat on their faces, (Portugese were gas men for tumbling the Saxons back in the day) but of late I've lost my appetite for it. There is too much realism in the press that England don't have players nowadays and are miles behind the football world in terms of development. It's not as much fun seeing them crash and burn when they all see it coming. It's the Irish press that have assumed this mantle of inflated self-worth and bestowed it upon the national team.

Would like to see the Argies do well, had a real nice team in '06, Ayala, Riqueleme, and it was disappointing to see them beat by a technically inferior German side. Would also be backing the Belgians and Uruguayans.

Never cared for the Dutch and really disliked them since 2010, likewise the Italians who have always seemed to do alot with very little. I don't buy into the whole Brazil "joga bonita" thing. T'is like going to a match and supporting the band.

I wouldn't say I will be supporting them but would like Brazil or Belgium to win. Generally find it hard to get worked up about international football-all the Home nations and Ireland are absolutely brutal to watch. Personally have no great liking or disliking towards England, as a united fan find it strange when people cheer for rooney and co one week and then hope they get beat the next. Anyone know when group draw is being made?

I'm glad England are there. The inevitable meltdown and fallout is great entertainment....must be what it's like for other counties looking at Mayo... :P

Seriously though, England are going to get destroyed out there. I'll be on my hands and knees hoping we get drawn in same group as England on 23rd February for Euro 2016.

England,Ireland,Slovenia,Armenia,Iceland and Gibraltar(going to be in it) would be a lovely group with some cracking away trips.
Let's hope that the Irish will be able to deal with any shots fired at them in Gibraltar in the away match, unlike in the past.

But you still might shout against county players in a game not involving your own club. What if England were playing Mexico can you not shout for one of them even though both teams would have United players? I don't see the contradiction in shouting against players from the club you support when they are playing with someone else that you have no connection to.

I married into a Spanish family so I have a decent chance of a few good excuses to got to the pub at unusual hours.

I live in England and I generally don't equate their football team with any historic or nationalist issues. I don't mind how they do and for the pleasure it gives many of my English friends I am happy for them to do well.

I often get people having a go at my patriotism for not supporting the Rep. of Ireland football team. They are just a team in a sport I have little more than a passing interest in. I don't take interest in athletics or equestrian sports either but no one questions it then. I wish them well because they are Irish naturally.

As for English football. Probably by the time the world cup rolls around the media will have hung Roy Hodgeson and it didn't take long with is 'racist' non-event.

Brazil will be good. Argentina in Brazil will be good. Germany and Italy will do what they always do and get to the latter stages. Holland won't. Belgium might cause a surprise or two but you don't come from nowhere to winning  World Cup in another continent.

Last 4 Brazil, Spain, Germany, Italy/Argentina.

Last 2 Brazil Spain.

They sent a great side in '06 and were beaten in the Q-F by a middling Kraut side. The Krauts has a great side defeated by a Italian team in serious transition at the last Euro's. Guessing the Semi-finalists on current form is piss, there'll be a outsider in there. Sure didn't Turkey and South Korea make the semi's in '02.

I would almost guarantee that the Brazilians won't win it without the help of some serious home-town refereeing. They are good enough but I expect them to shit the nest like the last time they hosted it. Nothing short of FIFA pulling some serious moves for them or the ref giving them more than the average share of winners luck will let them claim the 2nd world cup trophy as there own.

Knocked out in the Quarters which was a pity. Messi has yet to score a goal in the WC asaik
Lovely goal, but should be called a 7 pass goal rather than a 25 pass goal. For the first 18 passes they went precisely nowhere.

Apart from the excitement of some Ireland games I'm still waiting on a World Cup to surpass 82 and 86.

They were good Hound but 70 was epic. The best finals ever.

France are playing some decent football recently. Ribery is the becoming the heartbeat of the team, very reliant on him going forward however. Greece missed out on goal difference to Bosnia, Athens is tough place to go and get a result. Can't see any of the unseeded teams causing an upset in the playoffs on current form.

Would love to see them go through, be a great story. From highlights and match reports they've done well to get as far as they have..ala Estonia a couple of years ago.
Hope we draw them for the Euros...place I'd love to visit.

Be great if they made it alright. Temperatures drop dramatically in Iceland, in November, so that could be a big bonus for them if they had home advantage for second leg.

Iceland played in the European U21 Championship last summer so there was signs of potential there. Main striker is with Ajax, Sigurdsson with Spurs and obviously Eidur Gudjohnsen still playing too.

Uraguay.

England for 1/4s. Beat Spain with mad deflection at the  end of the game to advance to Semi.

Meet Germany in Semi's, Roony spoons peno in penalti kicks after extra time.

Germany meet Uraguay in final. Forlon and Suarez dive for peno's. Both given, both scored.
Two germans sent off for being too blonde and having "Merkel love child" tattoos.

World recession ends.

England talks about what might have been and weep.

USA invade New Zealand for no apparent reason.

Irish work sick days higher during world cup than even when Ireland are playing in it.

The Brazalian versión of that bloody irritating horn thing used during African world cup, is blamed for the death of 2 billion people, but also soothes world hunger figures.

Massive riots in Brazil due to demands for political upheaval. World press concentrates on those dives against the Germans.

Greece amassed 25 points from 10 games, scoring 12 goals and conceding 4 - we saw it ourselves in the Aviva; they are seriously defensive.  They won't care whether they're home or away first or second - they'll play exactly the same way in both venues - they'll try to score on a counter-attack or from a corner and will make no attempt to build attacks through possession.  I can see them being confident of beating anyone they draw in a play-off.

They are very dour, won Euro 04 playing like that. I was at that game in the Aviva, awful game for sure. Still, not like they are all out attack like Portugal or France. They have an ageing player in Karogounis  who is still the main man. Samaras up front is a handful but no Ronaldo.

Like a lot of the posters on here - I love seeing the English hype and expectations crushed in these tournaments. Feel slightly different this time however as the media has realistic expectations for once! They are miles behind Spain, Germany, Italy and Holland in Europe in terms of their performances at big tournaments. They've now been passed by Belgium as well! I can't see them making the last 8 and if they do, that's as far as it'll go.

I think a European team is going to win in S American for the first time - Germany for me and they're 5/1 already with all the bookies!!

When you are cheering for Rooney with Man United, you are also cheering for Robin Van Persie and loads of other nationalities. At the same time, you are cheering against Lampard, Gerrard etc.
I cheer for England because we are far more culturally similar to them than to any other country and because of the huge enjoyment the Barclays Premier League™ gives me.

Good to know you're referring to the trademarked Barclays Premier League as opposed to the knock off one.

If any international team is associated with fish and chips, it's Ireland.

And they won't IMO, as they can only be drawn against France,Portugal,Greece or Ukraine in the playoffs. Slim chance vs Ukraine i suppose as they can be hit and miss.
They can't draw France as France are second seeds. Croatia are first seeds instead of France.

The English, like Protestants in the North, don't have a culture.

I dont understand why anyone from Ireland would support England.

Bitterness aside how can anyone seriously say the English don't have a culture ? Are GAA people in Ireland the only people in the world that have a "culture" ?
Ah, Shakespeare, Dickens, Orwell and The Beatles would hardly count as culture as far as true gaels are concerned, now.

Possibly Netherlands will do well. I voted for them at Euro 2012 and look what happened there, but they have unfinished World Cup business in South America.
England should do better than recent tournaments.  And naturally I hope they do well, only in solidarity with the many GAAboard members here  who see themselves as diehard fans of english clubs,  it will be good to see players from their clubs, Man U/Liverpool/Arsenal do really well on the world stage.

Greece may be all that but they would be the only team out of the 4 seeds that Iceland would have a slim chance of beating over the 2 legs. It's a question of football styles and Greece's would suit iceland better than the other 3.
Greece have fallen a bit since Karagounis has nearly hit the 40 mark, those 1 nils they have been clocking in the qualifiers, are going to be harder to hold onto.

So, is it Shakespeare, Dickens or Orwell who makes you like the English national football team?

You like the because they are culturally similar to you, what a load of bollix.
That's just one of the reasons. And they're culturally similar to you, too. Unless you don't speak English, watch their television, read their media, or listen to their music.

England looked desperately poor last night. First touch of all their players seemed to let them down at some stage. Passing poor, lost count of the number of times Gerard in particular gave the ball away in the first half. Cole looked sluggish also until substituted. Wouldn't be surprised if they dont make it past the group stages.

No, not really. In fairness to Ronaldo he is a brilliant goal-scorer and last night's performance should finally bury the myth that he doesn't produce it in big games. It's just that Messi, particularly of a couple of seasons ago, was producing that kind of display practically on a game-by-game basis; e.g. the 4 goals v Arsenal in the CL 2nd leg, the performance in the 5-0 defeat of Real in the Clasico. He was so good then it was ridiculous.

Anyway, I don't think the World Cup is going to be much good to be honest;

England are terrible! Kyle Walker can't defend for toffee... Cole is past it and their central defence is brittle as well. Midfield all they have is Townsend and possibly Wiltshire that are quality and the rest poor, then Rooney and that's it!

When you think of the German team that beat England it would make you wonder why England get so carried away!

Townsend ? Quality? Based on what exactly? Must be the most headless player ive seen in a long time, he has scored a couple of screamers but is very very wasteful

Are the English getting so carried away?
My impression is that the penny has finally dropped as to acceptance of where they stand in the hierarchy. I'd have them in about 7th or 8th place of the European qualifiers, not terrible but possibly a good team in the making, in transition.

Agreed. Head down all the time....
Watched back the highlights last night of the Germany game. Reus and Götze are a different class. Germany will be in the shake up next summer, the draw could be important though, if the are drawn to play in Fortaleza or Manaus, Arena Amazônia up the north where the heat and humidity is mad, their high tempo pressing game could have them fooked after the group stage, legs could be shot.

Don't agree with you re. Townsend. No better than Lennon or Walcott - 1 dimensional, head down and top defenders at the WC will have him tucked in their back pocket after 5 minutes. He looked good against a couple of poor sides recently.

Totally agree re. England's back 4. They don't have top defenders - Cahill and Jagielka wouldn't get anywhere near a top international squad. The fact that their top pick back 4 come from 3 clubs (Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton) who play such different styles doesn't help them to gel and I'd say any team they meet at the WC would definitely fancy their chances of scoring a couple against them.

At least the English media and public are more realistic in their expectations than usual and this may actually play to their advantage and take the pressure off. Hope not but.

They have been booed off in their last two games.

If that is getting carried away, I'd hate to see them despondent.

The Belgians have been in poor form of late beaten at home 3-2 by Japan on Tuesday and 2-0 last week by Columbia, although Columbia were very impressive in Qualifying and I would expect them to well at the WC. Japan are decent and have some quality players like Honda, Kawaga,. Would still have expected Belguim to have enough at home with the players they have.

Colombia have a very good team, they are one of the seeds along with Belgium in the WC draw.

Yeah Columbia are ranked 4th in the World, the Belgians in 5th. Nothing much in it. Suppose when they were missing a player like Kompany it didn't help matters either for the 2 games.

It's a toss-up between this thread and the WTF thread for this!!

QuoteBrazil 2014: World Cup draw explained

The process of deciding who plays who at next year's World Cup is a complex one, so let's try and simplify it ahead of today's draw in Costa do Sauipe in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

The 32 qualified countries will be split into four pots, and drawn into eight groups each containing four teams.

Pot One is the top seeds: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

Pot Two contains the unseeded South American countries and the qualifiers from Africa: Algeria, Cameroon, Chile, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Ghana and Nigeria.

Pot Three is the teams from North and Central America plus Asia: Australia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, United States.

Pot Four contains the nine unseeded European teams: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, England, France, Greece, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Russia.

At the start of the draw, one European team from Pot Four will be selected at random and added to Pot Two to make it eight countries in each pot.

The four seeded South American teams will be put into a temporary pot (Pot X) and the European team from Pot Two will be drawn in the same group as one of them.

The draw will then proceed with Pot One being emptied and the teams allocated to position one in the Groups A-H in turn.

Pots Two, Three and Four will then be emptied in order but no South American teams can be in the same group, and a maximum of two European teams are permitted per group.

Teams from Pots Two, Three and Four will have their positions in the group drawn randomly.

Live coverage of the draw for the FIFA World Cup 2014 from 1635 on RTÉ Two and RTÉ.ie (RoI only).

Tough draw for the chaps in this Moy Park Chickens World Cup 2014 tournament but I'm sure we can come out of the group without too much fuss, although having to deal with the world's finest player in Luis Suarez (the jewel in the Barclays Premier League™ crown) is certainly something to think about.

Particularly looking forward to us setting the record straight in Belo Horizone-ch in the final group match against Costa Roca, after that infamous 1-0 defeat there to the USA in 1950. Newspapers in England mistakenlly thought that result to be 10-1 to England, which was perfectly understandable given that we were by far the best team in the world.

Then it's onwards and upwards with an easy second round draw against one of the minnows of Colombia, Greece, some African team and I can't remember who.

All in all the expeditition is already shaping up to be just as successful as the British Loins' famous civilising mission to South Africa in 1974.

I think it's a comfortably better selection than last time and arguably as good and better as most of the squads since 1990. Loads of good, young players there.

I don't believe the right man is in charge, however.

Never liked the Brazilian soccer team. Always seemed to lack a bit of balls. Maybe it's the Nordie in me that wants to see them hauling the player down by his shorts in the last-man tackle.

Argentina however, there was a side with a bit of steel to go with the flair. I'd say a fair few could hold their own in a pub brawl.

England's 23 man squad plus 7 stand-by players to be announced at 2pm today.  No Ashley Cole at all and apparently no Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverly or Ashley Young (though these 3 may be on stand-by).

None of them deserve to be in the squad. England are not great but have better options than those guys the way they have played this season.

In fairness you will meet very few people in England who will disagree with you. From what I can see anyway there is a realization there that this WC is more to give the younger players a "blooding" with the hope of better to come in the future.

Guaranteed you will still have some posters here harping on about the  mythical "hype"/ unrealistic expectatoins  etc etc.

My guess at England squad:

Hart, Foster, Forster;

Walker, Johnson, Jones, Smalling, Jagielka, Cahill, Shaw, Baines;

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gerrard, Lallana, Lampard, Sterling, Barkley, Henderson, Wilshere;

Welbeck, Rooney, Lambert, Sturridge.

They're mad not to take Terry... he's had a better season the Jagielka, Jones and Smalling!

There's no legislating for Uncle Roy. He might bring Jamie Carragher yet! England need to decide what they are doing at this World Cup. If they are trying to win it (I know, I know) then lads like Terry are still the best available at their positions. Ashley Cole would also deserve a spot in the squad you'd imagine on that basis. If not, and they are trying to build for the future, then the likes of Shaw, Walker, Sterling, Wilshere, Sturridge and Llalana should all be starting. By the way, if Llalana signs for Liverpool, I expect the BBC to rename themselves LBC.

A World Cup comes around once every 4 years, the notion that you would use such a tournament to 'build' for the future is nonsensical, you have to take your best squad to go as far as possible.
Title: Re: Who will you support in the World Cup?

I suppose what I meant was if they feel their 'best' squad hasn't a hope (which it hasn't) then why not use it to give experience for the Euros and future WCs to the fair few 19,20 and 21 year olds that are on the fringes. You can't beat the experience of playing in a World Cup tournament, apparently, so why 'waste' that experience on older bucks that have no chance?

(Not saying that's what I think, I'd be inclined to bring your strongest squad right now, but that's what I meant by the argument).

Surprises??  Well Smalling...Lampard.

This squad looks weak at the back and may find itself exploited by any half decent players it comes up against :P.  Hart hasn't been at his best either.

To be fair to Hodgson he does seem to have gone mostly for form players, Cahill, Lallana, Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge though he has still picked Rooney and Welbeck ;).  Oxlade and Wilshere have both been injured recently.

On the plus side I think Barkley is going to be a really good player and Shaw has a lot of potential though you would think he'll be understudy to Baines at the WC.

In other news Pepe Mel gets the heave-ho from WBA

I missed out on Milner. He goes and Kyle Walker doesn't. Only 7 defenders though I suppose Milner could fill in at right back in an emergency.

AQMP obviously was hoping for no United players to be picked (I'd be happy enough if they got the summer off too) but the 4 picked are well worth their places. People think Smalling is useless because his use of the ball is not so good, especially out wide, but he is an excellent defender with unreal pace.

With Walkers injury and Johnsons form, RB is a problem area for them.

Johnson very lucky to make it, has had a very average season.

Man Utd finished 7th in an average League.  Rooney was way off his best, Welbeck is a bona fide tube, Smalling is worse than Welbeck and Jones can do everything except defend.

On the other hand you would be justified in countering "Who else will he pick?".  I think that shows that this England squad is pretty thin.  I'd also include Lampard as a player who shouldn't be anywhere near the World Cup on current form.

For once the British media are down playing this, rightly so.

Trivia note:  The first England World Cup squad since 1954 not to contain a Tottenham Hotspur player

They won the same average league by 11 points a year ago. Rooney clearly had a better season than last season and is England's best player. To suggest he shouldn't be picked is laughable. If the WC was last year should Gerrard have been dropped?

In a funny way the perceived lack of talent in the England squad and the consequent drop in expectations should help them. I think they still have a decent enough squad and with good managment could do ok. Hodgson has got teams well organised in the past and if he can do this there's always a chance they'll score from a set piece (Rooney, Gerrard direct or via good delivery) or a breakaway (Welbeck, Sterling, Sturridge, Ox - serious pace on the break). Just wonder can he get them solid enough defensively. As always it will be interesting.

Thats what I'd go for although I'd probably have went for Flanagan at RB. Rate him and he can defend.

                      Hart

Johnson  Cahill    Jagielka   Baines

            Gerrard       Barkley

       Ox           Lallana        Sterling

                     Sturridge

They have to go with pace and youth.

True I just wouldnt go with Rooney. Over hyped tube. Perhaps Henderson beside Gerrard and Barkley for Lallana. Barkley could be very dangerous closer to goal.

No way will Roy set out that team, he should, as he has nothing to lose. He can play down expectations in a tough group and say he is focused on the future and building a team.

The media will likely buy it as its an English manager and they'll call them Englands Lions or the like.

But I'll expect him to struggle to get a team, even of that set-up, to play off the cuff football with pace and invention. He loves a straight line.

Pretty much nail on the head there Bingo.

Hodgson really must be rueing (sic) the injuries to Walcott and Walker.

Reckon that most of England wouldn't have been too fussed if he had decided to leave Rooney at home.

Have never seen a poorer "on paper" England WC squad than the one chosen tbh.

People mightn't like him but he is still England's best player by a distance. He is their 5th highest goalscorer of all time (2 behind Michael Owen with same number of games played) and was instrumental in them qualifying (top scorer in qualifiers with 7). People are clearly on the wind up here but to suggest England do not start Rooney is plain ridiculous, never mind not bring him!!!! Give it up lads.

Walcott is a big loss alright, given the type of game England should play. There is a strong case too than Terry should have been picked but I can see why he was not.

I'd largely agree on Rooney. When on form and fit, he is a huge player and will score goals. The worry is that, once again going into a tournament, he isn't fully fit. He has time to get ready and I don't think his fitness is a major concern, if United had off been playing for something in last 3 games, he'd likely have played. Apparently he taking a physio on holidays with him before they meet up.

For England, he needs to have a role and that should be closer to the goals. Don't think he needs to be tearing round the field and cover 15km a match for England, as they should have players to do that. If he is fit and plays in the final third, controlling his energy, he should have a decent world cup.

Interesting selection Walter and not one I'd disagree with too much but there's no way in the world that Hodgson will leave out Rooney.  Primary reason is if he sent that team out and they get chinned 3-0 by Italy the media would have him on a spit within 24 hrs!

Looking at the squads been announced, is England the only country that will have all its players playing in their own domestic league. I'd say Germany not be far off it but they would have a few in England and Spain.

Surely this is another negative for England, and Ireland as well at International level.

The players experience of playing at a different paced game and against different styles would be limited. When they need to make the changes to adapt on the international stage, they are often caught out.

Its amazing really now few England Internationals spread the wings.

Looking at the squads been announced, is England the only country that will have all its players playing in their own domestic league. I'd say Germany not be far off it but they would have a few in England and Spain.

Surely this is another negative for England, and Ireland as well at International level.

Maybe because they played in the Greatest League in the Worlddddddddddd and don't feel the need to step down to the lower level leagues...or maybe because they just are not good enough!  But sure it's not like it has helped Wales much over the years!!!!

At least it isn't for the money that they stay in England  ;)

Ince, Owen, Woodgate, Beckham are the most recent and hardly set the world alight. Ince had a decent spell, while Beckham was much the same for his stint in Real.

Hargreaves learned the trade over in Germany and was a good player, only for injuries.

I'd be gobsmacked if azpilicueta didn't make the squad,I'd expect him to be 1st choice right back. They could struggle up front,Costa will need to get used to the system of play very quickly,he looked average at Best against Italy. Then you've negredo who's had a quiet 2nd half of the season and villa who's a shadow of his former self.could be a tough tournament for them. Big question is has del bosque the balls to not have xavi in his starting 11?

That's a serious squad they have, they'd fill another squad with players to give many of the other nations a game.

Hard to know how they will gel on this occasion, hard to keep it going tournament year after year. You'd expect them to be better equip than others to play in South American conditions, sure they even have a local striker playing for them!

Agree with this fully. Koke actually needs to be replace him.

I'm gonna put my neck on the line and predict Spain not to get out of the group. It's a tough group. Chile will take them by surprise and Holland will be no pushovers.

Not convinced by Costa. Lot of hype about him but I think he could implode in the land of his father.

Thats what I'd go for although I'd probably have went for Flanagan at RB. Rate him and he can defend.

                      Hart

Johnson  Cahill    Jagielka   Baines

            Gerrard       Barkley

       Ox           Lallana        Sterling

                     Sturridge

They have to go with pace and youth.

Interesting selection Walter and not one I'd disagree with too much but there's no way in the world that Hodgson will leave out Rooney.  Primary reason is if he sent that team out and they get chinned 3-0 by Italy the media would have him on a spit within 24 hrs!

Yeah just went for this for a bit of craic and as you say there is no way he'll not select Rooney for fear of reprisals in the media.

I just think you have to go the Liverpool way if they are to have any chance. England cant retain posession, they dont even play the long ball well but one thing they have in abundance is pace. I'd pick a side to go flat out for 60 mins and replace pace with more pace!!

I'd think that leaving Azpilicueta at home would be a bad move as he can play in both full-back positions.  Looks like Martinez is being brought as a centre-half - unless the distinctions are being made by journalists.  Otherwise they've not much choice in that position.  Hmmm.

Germany play Poland tonight in a friendly but all the main men are missing because of the German cup final. Is there any decent attackers in the squad? I'd only recognise 2 or 3 defenders. I've Germany backed to win it out and wouldn't mind another striker to step up with Gomez not around and klose unlikely to be fit for 90 minutes in any games.

A top striker will probably between Germany reaching their customary 1/2 final and winning the thing. Despite being foolish to write off Klose I'd imagine you'll see Schurrle played much closer to goal along with Goetze and Muller. Their style is counter attacking in numbers so doesnt really rely on an out and out striker.

Pere Vert has been named as chaplain to the French team. What they don't know is that he's an Irish priest on the run who used to go by the name of Father Greene.

Spain's Provisional 30 man squad (I reckon Torres got in at no 30!).  Maybe a wee bit light in the forwards??

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, David de Gea.

Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Raul Albiol, Juanfran, Jordi Alba, Daniel Carvajal, Alberto Moreno, Cesar Azpilicueta, Javi Martinez.

Midfielders: Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Iniesta, Koke, Busquets, Cazorla, Iturraspe, Fabregas, Thiago, Mata, Silva.

Forwards: Pedro, Navas, Diego Costa, Villa, Torres, Negredo, Llorente.

The folks in italics are my guesses as to who'll be left at home - any views?

Thiago out of squad. injured Thursday. I think Villa has a chance to go ahead of llorente who is probably too similar to Costa.

Looking through the odds for the world cup, brazil at 3/1 is very short but I'm thinking Sergio Aguero top goalscorer and Brazil to win it at 66/1 is surely worth a couple of quid.

I'm always interested in how the USA are coming along.

Considering how their team in the Italia 90 WC were half amateur they have come on quite a bit.

They have Jurgen Klinsmann managing them now. He's brought in a few German born players like Julian Green and dropping Landon Donovan.

They certainly approach the game much differently than European or South Americans. Probably wont happen this year as they are in a very tough group but you get the feeling they'll eventually have a major breakthrough.

And of course they made a movie about it:

Haven't they made the QFs before? Beyond being extremely fortunate that's probably the extent of their potential this year or in any year.

A true Brit should be protesting for one UK team just like a true Ulsterman shouldn't be loyal to any lands other than Ulster, not England or the other parts of Ireland :) cough 'plastic Ulsterman' cough

There was a Brazilian called Josimar playing in 86  - I thought it sounded like the name of a Tipp hurler

Ah jaysus, they all got out of his way - was it his birthday or something? In fairness, that was probably the best game I ever watched - the triumph of patience and cynicism over style and flair; all of Armagh must have been watching.  ;)

Without looking at the link, is that Italy v Brazil 1982 or France v Brazil 1986? They're the two best games that stick out in my memory.

The film of the 1982 world cup final was on last night on BTSports. That was a great World Cup. I forgot Italy missed a penalty in the final as well. Schumacher's 'foul' on Battiston was unbelievable. It's jail he should have got, never mind escaping a free, red card or penalty. Jean Tigana was a great player, and Platini.

Anyone listen to the world football phone in? Its a podcast on BBC. Excellent coverage by BBC Brazilian journalist Tim Vickery.

Anyway I thought Colombia could be an outside bet to do well, but Vickery feels they peaked two years ago. The Falcao injury and a centre back partnership who are in mid 30's will leave them vulnerable!

Handy enough group though you'd think. Greece and Japan should be beatable for them, in South America, while the Ivory Coast should be the main competition for top spot. If Colombia do come out of it, they'll play someone in England's group. I'd fancy them, in South America, against Italy or England. Uruguay would be a tougher one for them I'd think.

I'd say every team in that group will fancy themselves. Especially with Falcao out Columbia are very beatable. I could see any two of those four qualifying. Both Japan (qualified for the Last 16 in two of the last three World Cups) and Greece have shown themselves to be exactly the sorts of un-fancied teams that thrive at the big tournaments.

It was either 2 reds or no reds.both by the letter of the law are probably reds and i reckon definitely would be during the World cup. It's things like the ITV lads response that pisses me off, only Hoddle would dare say Sterlings challenge deserved a red and he's usually as much of an arse licker as the rest.

Where was there criticism of some of the performances out there this evening? The wonderkid Shaw was average at best, same with rest of the defence,Lampard was dung,Rooney was dung,Wilshere was his petulent self,Foster was dung. The only ones to come out of it with much credit were Barkley,Ox and Lambert

How could Valencias reaction possibly not have been a red???!
I thought the sterling challenge was probably a yellow, although its one of those that depending on the match and the referee could well get a red due to the pace he flew in at.

Valencia never struck out just grabbed him by the throat so the ref could've decided as it was a friendly he'd let valencia off as its a pretty understandable response to a possible leg breaker from his blindside the week before a world cup. He was prob right to put them both off though because the next challenge between the 2 would probably have been the same or worse.

Agree with this fully. Koke actually needs to be replace him.

I'm gonna put my neck on the line and predict Spain not to get out of the group. It's a tough group. Chile will take them by surprise and Holland will be no pushovers.

Not convinced by Costa. Lot of hype about him but I think he could implode in the land of his father.
