It's been snowing on and off in Dublin all morning. Or, as I heard on Newstalk it was 'snailing' - a mix of snow and hail  :D
Had some craic driving through Citywest at 8 o'clock. There were hardly any cars in the Business Park and roads were lethal, skidded across the road going round a bend.
Promised to get heavy snow in the afternoon

Watched Boris Johnson on BBC News.

He said, pointing to the sky, " that's quite an impressive performance of snowing you've just put on but that is quite enough thank you".

I wish Brian Cowen would do something like that.

All the schools around Letterkenny are off today with the snow this morning. There was no snow at 5.30am but by 8.00 am it was everywhere and the roads were in a bad way. No snow in Derry or Strabane or around Convoy or Raphoe which are only 7/8 miles away.

Met Eireann

Snow showers in Leinster and Ulster will spread to many other parts of the country tonight. More persistent snow is likely to develop in eastern areas before morning. Fresh to strong, northerly winds generally, with penetrating frost in most places. Lowest temperatures 0 to -3 degrees Celsius.

if it both snows and freezes tonight then some measure of chaos will occur.

Here in Dublin 5 it has been snowing for the last 20 minutes or so. I don't think it will last but the big fear is that, if the temperature drops a degree or two, the slush will freeze and the roads will be in a dangerous state by morning.

Didnt stop me having to listen to "how are we going to get home" "we're going to be snowed in" "do you think is the buses running" "well the trains were running" "it's suppose to be bad tonight" etc etc etc for 8 hours!!!

I think there must be some science behind that somewhere. It's not just an irish thing. I was over in France just after Christmas snowboarding and the locals were saying the same thing. At the time Paris and France in general was getting covered in snow with the locals saying that it wouldn't snow in the mountains because it was too cold if it was snowing on the lower land. It didn't snow.

It's because snow rarely falls (but can) in air that's too cold because the air cannot usually hold enough moisture for any type of precipitation.

Well no snow in the city centre, unless you count the odd bit of scuttery stuff that turns to liquid on contact with the ground.
Certainly no sign of the blizzards they were forecasting.

Is their really snow sticking in parts of Dublin? Where?

Snowing at the mo where I am Hound (in Dublin).

Snowing here to where I am(in Dublin)
Well no snow in the city centre, unless you count the odd bit of scuttery stuff that turns to liquid on contact with the ground.
Certainly no sign of the blizzards they were forecasting.

Is their really snow sticking in parts of Dublin? Where?

it certainly snowed, but did not lie in the coastal regions. In the wilds of Dublin West it probably did lie and they are no doubt buried in Roundwood.

This is me earlier before it melted.

Two and a half hours to get in, so it was heavy round the lisburn/carryduff area but its not like the traffic service seen this coming and didn't grit the roads or even clear them - wooohh no!

Caught them by surprise didn't it - unseasonal weather they say! What a cracker - what exactly are we paying road tax for? Saintfield Road / Malone Road - not a sign of them gritted - touche traffic service touche!

As some one who travelled up form the west this morning the roads were not great around Roscommon and Longford town. Why the F@~k cant the county council gritters do the main roads from 6 o clock on. the only gritters i spotted were  two on the east and two on the west bounds lanes of the privatised M6 at kinnegad. Its not good enough that the main national roads dont get gritted until the council lads decide they feel like doing them.

Dublin city centre treacherous this evening.
Pavements and roads have ice an inch thick - with the earlier snow now frozen. The snow finished about 3pm but once the temperature dropped markedly about 5pm, then the conditions became truly dreadful.

Chaos up in the big smoke today. I was only a nipper in 1982 but I can't recall seeing anything similar to that until today. Traffic was an absolute disaster after the buses pulled their service. I considered abandoning the car on several occasions on the three hour drive home and heading into a pub for a few hot whiskeys! It'll be even worse tomorrow morning after it freezes tonight. Hopefully there won't be any more snow overnight.

Take it nice and slow on the roads if you have to drive. It really is treacherous out there.

My windscreen washers are frozen, put hot water on them this morning and by the time I got on the motorway, they were frozen again, had to pull over several times to put water on the windscreen. Other than keeping a bottle of water in the car and throwing it over the windscreen when it gets too bad-any other tips or is my car just a heap of sh**?

Not a reflection on the quality of the car at all maggie, in fact it could be nothing more than a reflection of how efficient it is by keeping all that heat generated by the engine in the engine, and not wasting it on the surrounding environment ;)

stpauls' suggestion should do the trick for you, and you'll get anti-freeze in any garage or car accessory shop.

Ladies, talk among yourselves for a minute.

Gents, in the event of frozen locks, don't forget the copious supply of warm fluid you possess within reach of a zip pull. I've known lads to walk distances to knock on doors asking for hot water without this remedy even dawning on them. A friend of mine took great pleasure in applying the solution to his boss's driver door one evening after work. How could the boss refuse?

If moved to offer this service to stranded ladies, please remember who you are and conduct yourselves with decorum, in as far as is possible in the circumstances.

Man with genitals in pipe cut free
A man who went to casualty with his penis stuck in a steel pipe had to be cut free by firefighters using a metal grinder.
Medics at Southampton General Hospital could not get the man's penis out of the stainless steel pipe because the restricted blood flow had caused it to become aroused, so they called in Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
They turned up with a special equipment unit from St Mary's station in Southampton and seven firefighters to help in what a spokesman said was a "delicate operation".
The firefighters used the four-and-a-half-inch grinder to cut the pipe from around the man's penis and it took about 30 minutes.
The patient was given an anaesthetic and his penis was left bruised and swollen but otherwise unharmed.
The anxious man, aged about 40, gave hospital staff no explanation about how the pipe got stuck after he turned up on Tuesday morning.
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Initially the crew did not have the appropriate cutting equipment to free the man.
"It was a very delicate operation that required a very steady hand and the crew was worried about things getting too hot during the cutting.
"It's certainly an unusual call-out and I'm sure the man won't be getting into that situation again."

If I have followed what I assume you are referring to ... ie 'supply of warm fluid you possess within the reach of a zip'. Well, I have stood discreetly in the street for 10 minutes and, eventually, after lots of friction - and an adult magazine - was able to 'fluidize' .. No joy, just a bit of a mess over the handle!

Most are, but not the stupid pricks in the white '08 that was driving less than a metre and a half behind my car passing Breaffy Church tonight, then overtook me and a grit truck doing well on 80-100kph as he drove off (appeared to be 4 young lads in the car), caught up with the reckless idiot at Manulla Crossroads driving at a steady pace, they had got caught beind a line of traffic, how stupid are these people who race in the ice/snow and you end up behind them only a few kilometres down the road.

Went a walk this morning to the big lake on the inlaws land and there a few of our Eastern European neighbours sitting fishing through the ice! It's hard to keep the children off the ice when they see grown men sitting in the middle of the lake.

Even the children were saying how warm it was today and wouldn't keep their hats and coats on.

You must have some battery life on your phone Gerry!

Was just up in greencastle there...it really is dangerous out there with the blizzards, I suppose it wasn't the best night to tow a car up to the mechanic!

I wish people would stop whinin about the weather. It's Ireland. Read a book FFS. Stay at home. Comtemplate your navel hair. Write a story. Talk to your ma. Get out in the weather and embrace it. You're feckin alive. Patrick Swayze.

You need a backup with a power supply not affected by storms.

How much snow are you folk getting? News reports I've seen didn't mention a total.

There are not many four-wheel drive vehicles there, no? Going uphill without that in a heavy snowfall, especially on an uncleared road, is a bear.

Has there been any word of lights being affected at all? We've nothing over here in Liverpool but wondering if we'll be affected in Belfast?

Was one hell of a nite. I would say that if this snow storm were to have happened during the cold spell at the start of the year we would have been looking at a depth of snow of around 50cm but due to the snow melting as soon as it landed in the early stages this only left us with about 15-18cm's.

Electric off at home as well and mobile coverage down as well.  Not great when work from home.

Heard from a couple of sources that it could be as much as a week before supply is restored fully there is that much damage to poles/cables etc.

My ma was exactly the same, got stuck right at the top, and didnt make it home until 2 this afternoon!

I'm headin home to Claudy tomorrow afternoon/ evening, what are the roads from Aughnacloy to Omagh like? And I usually scoot across then from Omagh- Plumbridge- Gortin- Aughabrack- Claudy. Anybody know what those roads are like?

The roads around Aughnacloy Ballygawley and Omagh today are perfect. Certainly the main roads.
Would have my doubts about Plumbridge direction but haven't been there so can't say.

Roads from Gortin - Plum - Claudy are ok at the minute, snow plough has been out. Will take you a bit longer than usual but still passable.
If there is much more snow tonight it could be messy.
