General discussion / Irish Rich List
March 29, 2010, 12:32:52 PM
An unknown Indian-born pensioner worth €4.4 billion (£3.9bn) has topped Ireland's rich list.

Pallonji Mistry — who became an Irish citizen in 2003 through his Irish born wife — has interests in real estate, cars, heavy industry, tea and part owns the Taj Mahal Hotel.

The Sunday Independent reported the 79-year-old billionaire, who still lives in Mumbai, owns 18.4% of India's largest private conglomerate Tata.

Despite making it to the top ten, Co Fermanagh man Sean Quinn is estimated to have lost a staggering €2.5bn (£2.2bn) supporting the now nationalised Anglo Irish Bank.

Texas-based billionaire John P Grayken was second on the list with a fortune worth €3.9bn (£3.5bn) due to the success of shrewd investments including Lone Star Funds. Dubliner Hilary Weston, a former model who owns the Brown Thomas chain with her husband Galen, a Canadian retail tycoon, were placed third with an estimated €3.67bn (£3.3bn).

The Sunday Independent rich list showed that, despite the recession and Ireland's boom to bust, its top 300 richest people are worth close to €50bn (£45bn).

Nick Webb, deputy business editor, said: "Property aside, there is an unprecedented number of Irish billionaires and multi-millionaires who made their wealth in other countries.

"Significant fortunes have been amassed by smart entrepreneurs in technology, retail, high finance, aviation and renewable energy."

Elsewhere U2 topped the poll for the richest celebrities with €595m (£535m) while Paddy McNally was named the richest sports star making €230m (£206) from F1 trackside advertising and corporate hospitality.

The Sunday Independent also published details of the 2009 losers who saw their fortunes plummet when Ireland's booming economy bottomed. Developers Bernard McNamara and Liam Carroll were hit hard when the property bubble burst, owing debts of €1.5bn (£1.35bn) and €1.3bn (£1.16bn) respectively.

General discussion / Headaches/ Migranes
March 18, 2010, 11:37:41 AM
Just looking a bit of advice. I've been getting a sore head every day now for the last week or so. Starts shortly after I get up and is located right at the front of my forehead. Sort of in my sinus area. It can get pretty bad, stopping me work etc but then once I take a headache tablet it goes and doesn't return until the following morning.
I though it might just be a temp thing but that's a week of it now. Any ideas, don't like running of to a doctor if it's going to pass. ( Plus just moved to Liverpool so don't have a Dr here yet, and the walk in centres can be a nightmare!!)

The tonic wine Buckfast has been mentioned in 5,000 crime reports by Scotland's biggest police force in the last three years, a BBC investigation has revealed. Skip related content
Related photos / videos Enlarge photo Almost one in 10 of those crimes in the Strathclyde Police force area was violent, according to figures obtained by the broadcaster under Freedom of Information legislation.

During that period the Buckfast bottle was used as a weapon 114 times.

Police said the figures suggested there is an association between Buckfast and violence.

The findings are revealed in the programme BBC Scotland Investigates: The Buckfast Code tonight.

During the programme Superintendent Bob Hamilton of Strathclyde Police was asked whether the figures mean that Buckfast can be said to be associated with violence.

He replied: "I think it's clear from the figures that there is an association there."

He added: "The figures are fairly clear that Buckfast is mentioned in a number of crime reports and over the period requested, the Buckfast bottle was used 114 times as a weapon."

Buckfast is produced by Benedictine monks in a Devon monastery.

The investigation also looks at the ingredients of the drink and how they may affect the behaviour of consumers, potentially making them anxious and aggressive if drunk in large quantities.

General discussion / Car Help Flooded
November 19, 2009, 10:43:30 PM
Just wondering if I could get a bit of advise. I did my best the night to kill my car by driving through a puddle that was a little deeper than I expected. She was nearly through when she just cut out. It's a diesel Mondeo. I've towed it home but when I turn the key most of the electrics work ok but she won't even try to turn over.

Any body any tips or is she going to need garage attention?

General discussion / Gaaboard account hacked into.
September 09, 2009, 11:14:21 AM
Just had a very puzzling morning.

Logged onto my computer this morning and into my emails. I had 4 messages telling me that I had 4 PM's from a couple of different posters whom I've never had any contact with previous, ( I'll not mention their names in case they don't want to).
Was kinda puzzled so logged into the board here and went into my PM's and there was no mention of these PM's as they had been deleted. Also there was no other out going PM's since the last one I knew I had made.
So I PM'd the other posters to see what the story was as I thought there must have been a feck up with gaaboard and that these pms were meant for someone else.
So one of the posters then got back to me saying that I had PM's them yesterday with stuff relating to Longball asking them to join his site etc. They were good enough to forward the pm's back to me.
So it was pretty obvious someone had been into my account and had sent out these PM's. they had even written at the bottom of them not to reply as the Mods were watching???

Now given my password was pretty easy to guess, my club name ( I know it's not very secure, but I didn't honestly think someone would want to hack into my account) I'm guessing someone has logged into my account and sent a few PM's.

Wonder who?  ::)

GAA Discussion / Blood Sub Query - Club championship
September 11, 2008, 09:08:30 AM
Here lads I was just looking to find out something. If a player comes on in a senior championship game as a blood sub but goes of again after 5 mins is that person classed as having played in the senior championship and make him unavaliable for the reserve championship? It seems to be a grey area and I wasn't sure what the story is?

Going to be travelling down from Omagh early on the Saturday Morning and was looking to see if there would be anything good to do on the way down like paintballing or go karting etc that could break up the journey. Sort of anything mid way down would be good.

General discussion / a fry a day......
June 18, 2008, 10:57:52 AM
well pints here's some good news for ya. Tho I'd take it with a pinch of salt!!

From Yahoo News.

Eating a big breakfast is the key to keeping slim, according to new research.

The bigger and more carb-laden the meal the better, experts say.

The study found women who eat half of their daily calories first thing lose more weight in the long term than those who start the day with a small breakfast.

And they are also less likely to pile the pounds back on.

It is thought that eating a meal packed with protein and carbohydrates helps cut cravings for sweet or starchy foods, as well as boosting the metabolism.

Nutritionist Angela Dowden said: "A big breakfast every day might be impractical but you are more able to deal with hunger pangs later and eat less overall.

"The ideal breakfast is grilled bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, mushrooms and tomatoes.

"It must be low-fat, high-protein, grilled, not fried."

Scientist compared the 'big breakfast' diet with a strict low-carb weight-loss regime.

They studied 94 obese, inactive women and found that low carb dieters initially lost more weight.

But the 'big breatkfast' group continued to lose weight while those on the strict diet regained almost all their weight loss.

Dr Jakubowicz, from the Hospital de Clinicas in Caracas, Venezuela, who led the study, said: "A very low carboydrate deit exacerbates the craving for carboydrates and slows metabolism.

"After a short period of weight loss, there is a quick return to obesity."

January 23, 2008, 07:27:52 PM
Well just wondering do many on the board here use a sauna often? I'm swimming once a week as part of my new year's training, so am heading into the sauna for about 15mins or so straight after.
I find it relaxing more so than anything. So is there any other regular sauna goers?

General discussion / werewolves - kinda
June 05, 2007, 05:43:24 PM
LONDON (AFP) - A police force is to put more officers on the streets during full moons because they believe the lunar cycle may be linked to violent behaviour, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Sussex Police have found that drinkers in the seaside city of Brighton and Hove are particularly aggressive during full moons, despite mixed findings from researchers who have examined the issue previously.

"I compared a graph of full moons and a graph of last year's violent crimes and there is a trend," Inspector Andy Parr told the Brighton Argus newspaper.

"People tend to be more aggressive generally. I would be interested in approaching the universities and seeing if any of their post-graduates would be interested in looking into it further. This could be helpful to us."

The announcement has led some locals to joke that werewolves -- humans who, according to myth, turn into wolf-like creatures during a full moon -- may be loose on the city's streets.

"When there is a full moon out, we look at the sky and say, 'Oh no, all the idiots will be out tonight,'" bouncer Terry Wing told the paper.

"I will start looking at the back of people's hands for hair next time."

Research on a link between the lunar cycle and violent behaviour has tended to be sceptical of any connection.

Earlier this year, Professor Michal Zimecki of the Polish Academy of Sciences reportedly found that a full moon could affect criminal activity.

But in a 1998 article for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, researchers from the University of Sydney and Manly Hospital in New South Wales found "no significant relationship."

According to folklore, the moon can exert a gravitational pull on humans in the same way as it can move oceans because up to 75 percent of the human body is water.

In separate findings, police also found that violence in pubs and nightclubs increased on paydays.

General discussion / Tech Help
May 16, 2007, 09:58:25 AM
Sorry for starting a new thread on this but I'm looking a bit of help. Haven't a clue about computers and mine seems to be playing up. Pictures on websites are coming up as a red X in the top corner instead of loading up the picture. I know there was something on here before about it and it was something to do with my settings but i can't remember how to fix it? Any of you IT heads help me out?
