Title: Olympic boxing
Post by: winghalfback on August 02, 2016, 01:54:24 PM
Really looking forward to watching our 8 boxers in action over the next month. I feel we have a real possibility of 4 gold medals. Could we get all 8 boxers as medalists by the end of it all?

The sky is the limit, a few favourable draws and there could be 5 or 6 medals.  Is Katie Taylor's dad back in her corner?  Doesn't seem to be as strong without him.

Always love the boxing at the Olympics but the change in the visibility of the scores throughout makes it less exciting.  The removal of headgear will obviously result in more stoppage wins, but the flip side is that cuts will probably be a big factor in this tournament now as there will surely be a lot of fighters at risk of pulling out the further they go on.

Officially there's been no explanation given and the last time she was asked about it Katie said http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/boxing/youll-have-to-ask-my-dad-why-hes-no-longer-my-coach-katie-taylor-34493361.html (http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/boxing/youll-have-to-ask-my-dad-why-hes-no-longer-my-coach-katie-taylor-34493361.html) so it's anyone's guess really

Removal of head gear is a big thing alright could go against one of our bigger names too who has a tendency to cut easily but I have seen them in action recently at the spar v Russia and they all look in fantastic shape. The Katie Taylor issue with her dad is a big factor in her success too as was rightly stated she seemed stronger with him in the corner. Katie should win gold using her last few outings as motivation to succeed. Imo she still is our greatest ever boxer just throwing that out there with all the talk of frampton being the greatest now although he's not far away.

Did any well known professionals get entered in the end?

I hope Katie takes gold again, but I reckon I'll be backing against her. Lost her aura of invicibility, there's 3 or 4 now who think they can beat her and, very importantly, the judges no longer think she's invincible. She still has a good chance of course, but her opponents are likely to be well overpriced.

A few good men setting themselves up for disappointment. The performance of our boxers at major championships in this generation has been nothing short of phenomenonal given the resources and numbers at their disposal. The last olympics was a relative miracle in terms of medal return.

I'm not sure we can realistically expect the HPU to continue to defy the odds indefinitely.

Trainers, good trainers are incredibly important to boxers, in that regard our trainers/ managers at the last Olympics were the best in the business.

Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam is probably the best known, complete joke that they are allowed in.  A few of the professionals got beat in the qualifiers though, think he might have as well.

Getting a bronze medal in Boxing at the Olympics, depends of luck as well as being good enough. If the three best fighters in a weight Division are in the same side of the draw, then the third best fighter will lose in the quarter-finals. There are always two Bronze medal winners, so on the other side of the draw the fifth best boxer could end up with a bronze! Not to mention the 4th best ending up with a silver!   :-\

Very good draw for the Irish lads with paddy and Mick getting byes to the last 16. Brendan irvines draw looks the trickiest. Katie is automatically into a Medal fight against an opponent she has already beaten. First up is David Oliver Joyce on sat. Can't wait.

Ps as for the drug story ye believe all ye hear you will eat all ye see.

Couldnt Understand the commentators confidence in the last round that Paddy would get the decision from what we watched. He landed a few combos but was landing plenty on the Spanish lads gloves and left himself open to getting caught with a few which he did. I'm no boxing guru but I wasn't shocked heredia got the decision.

MR2 messes his trousers every time someone criticises McIlroy.  Barnes did it and is now feeling the wrath of our keyboard warrior.  He's even trying to take one of his Olympic medals off him now ffs.

I'm a Big fan of Barnes &  Mcilroy.

Barnes is a great ambassador, and his tweets etc , much like McIlroy  show that he has personality and character.
I think the delay from qualifying early , to competing ,?at a weight he was struggling to make , proved his undoing. Gutted for him , a brilliant double Olympic medalist , not afraid to be a character! I hope he has a long future ahead of him , either in the professional game , or perhaps in the media . Many thanks to Paddy for all you have contributed to Irish sport!

I see the keyboard kings are at it again in here and on social media anyone who knows boxing knows the toll it takes on the body to cut down to the weight. Paddy is boxing at that weight near 10 years it was just one to many cuts previous evidence of this can be seen in frampton who had to move up in weight mc Gregor in the ufc too and more recently pa jo hula dance and Steven ormond have all struggled to loose the required pounds. I think paddy knew getting to 49 was going to be a tough job but he badly wanted the gold that eluded him the last 2 Olympic Games. He went out fighting and was honest as ever in his assessment afterwards. He will be back but possibly as a pro. Twitter had nothing to do with anything he tweeted as much the last olympics also it's all a bit of light hearted fun. Defeated today but paddy is still one of Ireland's greatest ever a true Irish man a legend and a hero. Now for the others to bring home the medals.

Agree with you 100 % , however should the boxing management have been aware that making the weight was going to be a problem.

Possibly should have been but the fact rooster Irvine had qualified at 52kg and paddy was already qualified at @49 was a big bearing on it. Hindsight is a deadly thing we all know that. One thing for sure the Irish team will use paddys defeat as motivation nothing is a given inside the ring.

Does he struggle to get down to that weight? The other guy looked pretty fresh after the 3 rounds while paddy was gassed.

That's what he was implying - https://twitter.com/RTEsport/status/762669876158705665
Refreshing honesty
Why would he fight at that weight if its a struggle for him to get down too?
Would he not be better off or actually would it not make more sense fighting at a weight that he can achieve or is that not how it works? I don't follow boxing much so don't know.

My comment was a bit of tongue and cheek remark about twitter. of course I wanted him to win but he was def struggling lethargic and unfit was obviously down to starving and dehydrating himself to make the weight. He was also unlucky that he was fighting early in the morning after the weigh ins as he hadn't much time for food and hydration either...

P.S. I thought you knew everything ;)

I think me taking offence is a little bit OTT I had a pop like a lot of others (that you have failed to say to, so trolling me about it is right) have done because he had some twitter banter with Rory (what is the world coming to)

Met Paddy a few times, watched his career as he boxed Carl a few times and he was best man at Carl's wedding, he's a decent spud with a good sense of humour, I have always wanted him to do well... this is just banter, so you'd do well to keep your pants on and not be trolling me for my posts

Another disastrous result for the Irish boxers. That fight was just a mess from start to finish, and it was mostly the Ecuadorians fault. It is inexplicable really, the form of the Irish boxers has been so poor. 3 of the 4 fighters so far being eliminated in the opening fight is not what was expected.

terrible fight. ward allowed himself to be brought down to that level. awkward opponent but at times it resembled a street brawl fs.

Ward has to feel slightly aggrieved though having been deducted 2 points because of the warnings from the Ref and no points deducted from his opponent.  They were both equally as bad.

I don't think so it looked to me that your man's style made Ward uncomfortable and he was holding him as much as possible. He definitely seemed out of puff halfway through the 3rd as well.

Your man was all over the place but he kept steaming forward, I thought it was just a matter of Ward staying covered up and waiting for an opportunity because the other fighter was wide open on a lot of occasions but it never happened.

Ward was shite from what I was watching. He was doing a lot of holding if not more than the other fella and let himself get into a brawl. Towards the end of the fight he was swinging wildly and looked completely fucked. Didn't perform at all. Olympics has been a disaster for the boxing team. Maybe we aren't as good as we think we are. And then there were 2! Stevie Donnelly went out battling as did rooster to better opponents just. Donnellys got to be very proud of his achievements t.hus far at the olympics rooster will be much stronger come Tokyo where I'll guess he will be boxing at 56kg. Donnelly too if he hangs about.

Can't see anything in conlons division so far in the competition to cause him any harm haven't seen the Cuban or the American yet tho

The first week was a clusterfuck for the boxers. First round defeats and everything . Would it have been any different with Billy Walsh around? Are they not good enough or is it something else?

Hopefully Conlan and Taylor can save the day.

I presume you're on the wind up!
In reality Ireland's "success" or lack of it has to be put into context. Apart from the fact that we have a population of 6.5 million compared to UK population of 65m, and world population 7500m, different countries have different resources.
An Irish sportsperson getting to top 10 or indeed top 100 in an Olympic sport is noteworthy . The arbitrary decision to reward only top 3 in any sport doesn't mean that they "have been shit" if they don't get a medal. Irish Athletes at the top level will focus on "being the best they can be" and if on the rare occasions their PB is good enough to earn a medal then it's a massive achievement on a world scale. We regularly are top end performers in rowing, sailing, running , equestrian , and particularly boxing.
Many of our best sports people Are in GAA, racing , rugby , motorsports , none of which are Olympic sports. We have 2 recent world number 1s in frampton and mcilroy who are not in Rio . In fact , Golf is a sport in which we are world leaders but none of our top men are in Rio( & I respect the reasons for this) .
Other countries can effectively throw money in to minority sports and put themselves in a position to win medals eg millions ploughed in to Cycling in the UK( & fair play to them).
Ireland on a fraction of the resources of other countries above them in the Olympic medals table have enjoyed some incredible successes over the years in & out of Olympic competition . To describe the performance of any Olympian as "shit" is comical , as an Olympian by definition have proven themselves as exceptional to even get on the plane to Rio!

What about the recent revelations from John Conlon regarding Michael o Reilly serious questions need asked. Absolutely shocking stuff ye wouldn't get away with it on a junior b reserve panel never mind on a team planning to bring back a serious amount of medals. I think this goes higher than Zaur and John I think it's the same set up who let Billy Walsh go. I'm absolutely disgusted.

It isn't always choice either. Standard higher across the board on the british team so a lot will be good enough for the irish team but not the GB team. There's never much controversy in that area. Only one I ever remember was in any way controversial was McIlroy from Larne who ran for Ireland then switched whenever he was good enough for GB.

What are the revelations whb?

The only lasting good to come from Rio can be overhauling the old boy's club in the IABA. If Shane Ross got rid of some of them and Hickey he'd have done his job well.

Getting rid of the lads who ran Walsh is the prerequisite to ever having a shot at getting him back.

I'd say in Katie's case the loss of Pete Taylor is a bigger factor than the Billy Walsh exit.
That said, it just goes to show you how tight the margins are in elite preparation. I'd say the Walsh factor was the extra grain of rice that tipped the scales in so many situations. The smallest of bad decisions can have an athlete undercooked, or over trained, or distracted, or tactically misdirected.
Whatever it was that Walsh had probably wasn't obvious to those who claimed there were 20 other coaches in Ireland who could do as good a job as him.

The boxers seem to be holding the party line fairly well. I always assumed that Walsh was extremely well got by the boxers, but maybe not? Michael Conlon's interview is fairly harsh, but maybe it's just because they are sick of being asked about it.

Its a small relatively new sport, not a lot worldwide decent boxers to navigate through and she was at the forefront for a longtime, she's made the sport so popular, probably thousands of girls in ireland and Britain have taken up the sport because of her...

Maybe the athletes haven't acclimatised properly or haven't conditioned themselves accordingly... Either way Ireland has underperform in areas that it was expected to do well in... It happens

It's not just party line with Conlon, he has to believe his preparation is spot on, he can't admit that Walsh leaving would affect his preparation.

HPU would focus on Lifestyle, technical, physical, tactical and mental. From speaking to one of the S&C coaches Walshes biggest input was on the mental and lifestyle preparation of the boxers. The fact they are coming out blaming referees etc tells me they are not mentally tuned in, these boxers should only be worried about their performance, referees are uncontrollables.

The Finnish boxer trained with the USA, who is over them again?

Any chance the loss of Pete Taylor was connected to Walsh's exit?

She's 30 since july. 34 would be a stretch I'd say, but if she was in good form, who knows. The fact is she hasn't really been in good form, so 4 years from now probably looks like a million miles away to her.
The girl that just beat her was 35 or something so you never know.
Maybe she will go pro and make a few quid before she retires.

Near zero money in the pro women's game. Would make more winning another Olympic medal in all likelihood.

Tough on her given that Women's boxing wasn't an Olympic sport for a number of years while she was dominating it. I didn't see the fight but it sounds like it could have gone either way!

Has anything come to light about why her Dad isn't involved anymore?

Plenty of rumours but none for consumption here. Billy Walsh was the glue that held the Irish boxing system together. Likes of Michael Carruth are never going to criticise the IABA with his brother at the helm. But it's a well known fact that they are a shambles behind the scenes.

Walsh made hard decisions as a head coach and was completely in charge of their preparation. The coaches left are excellent technical coaches but they aren't managers. A lot of these kids are from the wrong sides of the tracks and need a lot of managing. There is also a train of thought that the Irish boxers went out far too late to Rio. The USA for example were there a week earlier- who trains them again?

I'd agree with that. She referred in her post fight interview that this year has been incredibly difficult for her and it was obvious she was not just talking about the odd defeat or a drop in her boxing standards. I hope she sticks at it.

Comment: Loss of Billy Walsh has led to implosion of Irish boxing

Katie Taylor's defeat is the final straw for a sport that's in crisis

Johnny Watterson in Rio

The defeat of Katie Taylor in her first fight in Rio brings boxing in a full circle. A week beginning with scandal has ended in disappointment as Paddy Barnes and Joe Ward failed to live up to expectations, Michael O'Reilly was sent home and is probably going to be banned from boxing, and now the number one lightweight in the world and defending Olympic champion is out of the tournament. Irish Boxing has imploded.

In a timely piece on Sunday in  Sports Illustrated, the headline read: "Under Billy Walsh's guidance, USA boxing experiencing a tremendous turnaround."

At that stage the Americans had won 10 and lost three fights. In the text of the piece the writer quotes Michael Martino, executive director of USA Boxing. "We did an international search," he says, "and Billy Walsh was highly recommended."

In an Oireachtas hearing last October, John Treacy, chief executive of Sport Ireland said: "I would say our confidence [IN IABA]is shaken." Treacy added: "We were told there were 20 coaches who could do the job of Billy Walsh."

In a sense boxing was bulletproof. The boxers kept collecting the medals at European and World Championships. The cracks were papered over and life moved on until now.

In the four years since London, Irish boxing has changed and has done so in a chaotic manner. At London 2012 both Katie's father Pete Taylor and Walsh were in the corner for her gold medal win over Sofya Ochigava.

Pete was also in her corner in Jeju, South Korea in 2014, where she won her sixth successive World Championship. Prior to that Gary Keegan was also in the sport, setting up the elite systems.

All of that sporting intelligence has gone from boxing and in Walsh's case his experience is now working against Ireland. No one has replaced him. Instead coaches, all respected, have filled in around.
But since Pete's departure before Christmas, Katie's form has not so much dipped as taken a nosedive.

Beaten three times
In a Rio qualification event earlier this year she was beaten by Yana Alekseevna and later, at the World Championships in Astana, she was beaten for a second time by Estelle Mossely. Mira Potkonen's win at the Riocentro Arena was the third in a matter of months.
Southpaw Alekseevna's win was a surprise, Mossely's a shock and Potkonen's worrying. The Finn has been to Ireland a number of times to fight in Katie's shows around Bray. She has never been close to beating her.

"I thought I did do enough to win but I should be winning those fights a bit more convincingly," she said after the fight.

It was the same in Astana against the French lightweight.

Katie fought a tight fight. Her camp believed she had done enough to win it but the judges went for Mossely.

In the past her performances have been so uptempo that they have never been left to the subjectivity of judges but have, like all of her previous fights against Potkonen, been convincing and one-sided.

Challenging year
Prior to the first defeat this year Katie had not been beaten in World or European level since her first European Championship win in Tonsberg in 2005.
"I feel like it's obviously been a very, very challenging year," said Katie yesterday, maybe understating it.

She is now 30 years old – age isn't the issue. But the changes in the people around her are certain to have had an influence. Pete didn't just coach Katie in tactics and training but ran her boxing life.
He was detailed, protective and people in boxing would say difficult to work with. But his system worked for Katie and gave her certainty and direction in her boxing and her career in general.

While the Irish coaches have railed against the quality of judging, that doesn't explain the three defeats in as many months for Katie nor Ward's decision to fight rather than box nor Barnes's evident lack of energy at 49kg.

Less transparent
The 10-point must scoring system is less transparent from the round-by-round points, but looking at that as a factor in terms of this year's results isn't credible. Katie has become less effective and her opponents have improved.
Her issue is a specific one, that of boxing a general one. The IABA have not replaced Walsh, or replaced the job he did, which was as much a manager of people who communicated well.

He was an overseer and while the boxers are happy with the coaches they have, that is not the issue. The IABA has not trawled the world as the Americans did.

Now Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes and Joe Ward will go home and consider their futures in a changing landscape.

What would their grounds for appeal be though? I think there has been appeals before but on technical grounds. Like a boxer getting a warning but judges not taking warning into account.
This just looks a bit sinister. A good nobbling job by the Russians is my guess.

Against crooked judges. I haven't seen one commentator make a logical case for the Russian having won the fight and yet all 3 judges scored the fight in his favour. I smell a rat there. Apparently a Japanese appealed a decision in London in 2012 and got the decision overturned, doubt anything will happen here but it was the worst decision I think I have seen in boxing for some time. The crowd reaction and that of the Russian boxer said it all.

Oh dear! Hopefully he was the one that went with the Russian.

In the London bout the Japanese fighter was behind after 2 rounds but knocked his opponent down 5 times in round 3 and he had also been awarded two-point penalty. The Kazak doesn t have those kind of grounds for appeal?

Very unlikely that they would reverse a decision and send the judges home.

Yes, I don't expect anything to happen in terms of overturning the decision but it puts a massive cloud over the boxing competition in general. The only way the Kazakh was ever going to win that fight was by knocking him out and even when that looked likely in round 3 the referee intervened.

Agree. The third round was much more level, and he did land a few. If it was the old system though, I'm sure Conlon would have had more scoring shots, but the Russians were heavier. He wanted to walk forward, take punishment and land heavy shots, like a certain type of Pro boxer. Amateur boxing should be about technical skills, landing punches and avoiding punches.

The sport should be suspended from the Olympics, full stop.

It was another Russian in the heavyweight final and it was worse than the Conlon decision today. It would make you think that names are on medals from the outset, that article from the Guardian could well ring true and is an eye opener.

I don't know a whole pile about boxing but to an untrained eye it seemed like he won the first 2 rounds comfortable and then last one was maybe even ish at worst!  The poor lads will be in bits after that as his heart was set on gold for sure.  It been a terrible couple of weeks for the boxers.

Russia have been proved to be systemic cheats at the Olympics - their participation was a joke and anyone who thinks that they would only use drugs, rather than bribery and corruption is being naïve.

Just as an aside, does anyone know why Katie isn't being trained by the father anymore? I haven't heard anything at all about it.

BTW if is anything of a personal nature for her, don't bother telling me - just wondering was there sporting reasons or was he closely associated with Billy Walsh?

disagree..you swing widely for 3 minutes you will catch your opponent at some stage. He landed a couple clean, but as with the rest of the bout, Conlon was clearly the far better boxer landing the lions share of the clean hits. Incredible decision

Used to be a button system where scoring punches were counted by a button press by a judge and to score a point enough buttons had to be pressed within a very short time frame.  Now it's a 10 points must system.

Check CompuBox on Twitter for the stats on the Russian who was gifted the heavyweight gold last night. Watched that fight live and it was an even greater travesty than the Conlon decision. One of the judges in that fight was an Irishman too!! Would be an interesting interview to hear his reasoning as to how he possibly give the Russian the final round when he was absolutely pummelled.

Will be interesting to see CompuBox assessment of the Conlon fight. My guess is that Conlons wasn't as blatant but will still show that he clearly won the fight.

The athletes themselves will be happy of course but the general public will always judge it on how medals. I couldn't tell you who has PBs or SBs from this olympics but I can tell you who has won olympic medals. This olympics has been a disaster. We are a small nation and of course we are not going to be leading the medal table but we should be doing better.

Yes, the bare stats are quite surprising but I thought he simply outboxed him first round, catching him with much cleaner shots than he was hit with. He changed tactics to suit and out fought him in the final 2 rounds. I had him as a 3-0 winner though the Russian landed some good clean shots in the final round when Conlon engaged him inside.

Has there been any international reaction to the fight, or are we viewing it through green glasses?

No, and I doubt there will be.... In fairness bar the boat people, we've been dung...

Not entirely true, Paulie Malignaggi, Billy Joe Saunders, Sergio Martinez, Matthew Macklin and Sonny Upton (to name a few) all had a say about it on Twitter. And it wasn't to congratulate the Russian lad.

Twitter?? I'm talking about on something that really matters, boxing associations be they professional or amateur bodies, outside of Ireland, ffs we'd a judge doing the Russian fight that was clearly on drugs (the judge, not figter!!). Not covering ourselves with any glory on that one

Yes, Twitter. The fight only happened about 7 hours ago. Social media's about the only reaction you're gonna get at this early stage.  What would constitute an 'international reaction' in your eyes?  A press release from Obama on Air Force One? And you're dead right about the judge.  I'd be friendly with a couple of younger lads who would box at quite a high level in Ireland (one of them trains most weekends at that elite centre in Dublin and was on the European schoolboys squad).  In his eyes the IABA wouldn't be much better than AIBA when it comes to dodgy results and the old 'nod and sink' stuff.

It wouldn't matter if everyone got pbs. It will be medals that will judge it. The English are having some laugh at our silver medals.

Bollix. Any competitor that goes out and gets an SB or PB is doing well, if you're performing at the top of your abilities, tthat's as good as you can do.

Dunno what the English have to do with it tbh

The athletes themselves will be happy of course but the general public will always judge it on how medals. I couldn't tell you who has PBs or SBs from this olympics but I can tell you who has won olympic medals. This olympics has been a disaster. We are a small nation and of course we are not going to be leading the medal table but we should be doing better.

Doing better in what disciplines exactly though?
Break it down and there are good reasons we don t do better I'm sure.

Simple numbers game for starters... 5 million against say Britains 60+ million?? More money to throw at it also, the lure of foreigners to apply fir citizenship and represent GB... Soooooo many other factors, training facilities also and coaches to name but a few

Boxing is the obvious one but corruption seems to have ruined that one. Why do we not do better at sports like rowing or track cycling? Are there other sports that we have potential in but athletes not getting the opportunities to improve? No money put into it, an attitude of 'sure we are only a small country', only there for the craic etc no doubt all reasons. New Zealand has a smaller population than Ireland and they have 3 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze. As I said we are a small country and no one is expecting us to be in the top 10 but we are currently 55th in the medal table with 2 silver. Pathetic.

Yip, that's about the height of it. Conlan was bang on when he said it was rotten from top to bottom.  I could be wrong but I think there could be more about this one - there's more than the Irish team very disgruntled at the display of judging at this Olympics.

Not to throw a spanner in the works, but anyone think Katie got lucky with her gold in London. I thought the Russian had won that and by the sulk in her face afterwards and arms folded, so did she.

Katie Taylor won the 2012 final fairly convincingly .  I think the scoring made is seen easier than it was but no doubt she won well ,

I was at the fight and thought it was tight enough, there was a very nervous feeling in the air til the result was called.

Regardless of how poor the decision was against Conlan today I think he behaved like a dick afterwards..

Conlan did what many's a fighter wishes they had the balls to say and do. The officials wear a suit of propriety and commit far more terrible and consequential acts.

Track cycling? does Ireland even have a velodrome?

The horsey stuff is an area where we could be doing better maybe but we used to sell off our best horses. Maybe we still do. wouldn t surprise me if some Irish bred horses 'won' medals for other countries last few olympics.

Victor Costello and Gary Halpin still hold Irish schools records in Shot and Hammer. Costello competed in 92 olympics. Field competitions may be an area we could target but lads that are decent in that area would also, more than likely, be involved in a team sport like rugby. Like Costello and Halpin concentrated o the rugby. God knows what they might have done if they were highly coached in the throwing.

The track will always be about making finals and pbs.

Kenny Egan reckoning that Nikitin was destined to get a medal at the outset with brown envelopes handed over.

Apparently he was absolutely blessed to win his first fight against a Thai boxer. Got another gift today.

He was I watched it.  Thai fighter was very good and all agreed the decision was strange but that Conlon would rather fight the RussIan as he was nowhere near as tecynically good a fighter as the Thai,  albeit though the Russian was a brawler

That today was a disgrace,  4 years wasted. People who didn't see it will think it was sour grapes, it isn't.  Conlon was magnificent..real boxing masterclass.  He won, simple as that.

Afterwards he could've been pulled aside, he was obviously raging and acted as Paddy Barnes did 8 years ago, live on TV.  Wouldn't go unnoticed by RTE etc when they're picking pundits in years to come

Absolute and utterly robbery. I'm sickened by this Olympics.  Feel for him

Apart from boxing and golf most of the Olympic disciplines are classed as "other sports" by RTE and the newspapers.  Elite sportspeople in Ireland usually end up playing GAA,  soccer or rugby. There aren't that many world class coaches in other sports. Yer man in Skibb rowing club is a rare bird.
If Ireland had one gold it would be 10 notches higher on the.list. 2 medals is a bit below what you might expect but Belgium with 10m people has 5 medals as does Switzerland.

I'm glad Conlon reacted like he did, will hopefully highlight the problem more than if he had just taken it on the chin (and why should he have).  As for the judges being corrupt, thats another question.  There are lots of terrible decisions in boxing (and other sports) at both amateur and professional level that leave you scratching your head, but a lot of the time they are the result of poor officials and not necessarily a part of some conspiracy.

Too many people base the result of a fight as being good/bad on the figures produced by compubox too.  They don't tell the whole story.  The quality of the punches is missed in these stats as well as the distinction between a wee jab and a crushing hook.

As for the 2012 lightweight womens final, I remember thinking that the Russian could have got that decision, I was very nervours too when the result was being called out.

So now we have the New York Times, Ring Magazine and Al Bernstein commenting on it.  Would this now constitute an "international reaction" MR2?  Or is it still just the silly aul Irish lads having a moan?

Tomorrows fish and chip paper, will Conlon get another go??

Straw man.  Who suggested that?

Someone asked if there'd been an international reaction at all.  You flat out answered no.  And unless you want to argue that the UK, America and Argentina aren't international,  then that was just plain wrong.

Had to chuckle at that alright. The initial reaction is natural and normal, but some lads love a crusade. Reminds me of the Thierry Henry handball thing now.

The judges should not be allowed judge again, and if they are corrupt then they should be banned and/or arrested. Other than that, everyone has to move on.

AIBA have released statement. They review every fight and saw a handful where the scoring wasn't to required standards. Those judges will not be allowed judge for the rest of the tournamnet.

The Olympics is a busted flush, too many sports, too much corruption.

The Olympics is now about nationalism and money, it probably always was. The haves and the have nots, the sports corporations and the corrupt governments and associations.

When you look at the millions spent by the UK just to win track cycling medals, a sport which is not part of their culture you have to ask why? Are medals worth that much to country, just so it can get all jingoistic ignoring their many social ills, giving these athletes knighthoods reinforcing class stereotypes.

Personally I wouldn't give a cent of government money to elite athletes, they don't deserve it, let the corporations, the sports companies, the pharmaceuticals finance them.

Sporting organisation (AIBA) hangs a few sacrificial lambs (judges) in the hope that the scandal gets passed over. Where have we seen this before? When what is required is an independent investigation of its practices as very often it is perpetrated by those at the very top.

I presume the Irish judge is one of those sent home. So we have now had a boxing judge sent home, a boxer sent home and the head of the OCI arrested. You couldn't make it up.

They looked at the shambles of an Olympics they had in Atlanta and thought "How can we get more medals quickly".

Track Cycling was quite an easy win for them because it wasn't really taken seriously and doesn't require an inordinate amount of skill. They threw some money at it and hey presto they are the best in the world now.

I think they go around screening athletes in school's now from other sports and tell them "You could be a cyclist" and that's where they are getting good success. I think the young girl who came 3rd in the sprint used to be a heptahlete!

That's a bit silly... They still compete at athletes they always did at rowing, they used to at other dpirts but not so much now, cycling has been on an upward curve since Hoy .... Wiggins and the rest have rowed in behind them and that's created massive interest in it, which has given them results

That said, some move to the cycling when an injury slows them down in the some other sport, e.g. an arm injury might feck you as a heptathlete, but allow you cycle.

I know nowt about boxing, but couldn't help but notice on the news last night that the Russian had the face bate off him, whereas Conlon hardly had a mark on him.  But somehow he ends up on the losing end.

BBC confirm that Nikita ruled out with injury. He was bad enough even before the Conlon fight.

I can understand that the judges sent home were not those involved in the Russian farces. They did what was required of them I suppose. This move is a ruse by the IABA to demonstrate that they have checks in place to maintain standards in judging. If they get heat later they will point to the fact that they had quality control in place and did all they could do try to ensure fairness.
Cute hoors and pure spin and bullshit.

MR for someone who complains about people being internet trolls you're being a bit of an internet troll.

Too whom?? The Irish Olympic team?? Don't be daft franko is reacting and trolling my posts is he not?? Who am I trolling?

Drop the victim complex - you posted something in response to another user which was blatantly wrong.  I pulled you on it.  I'd re-check your definition of 'trolling'.

Blatantly wrong?? And you don't need to defend anyone when I post something you're on it like a rash  :-*

Yes, blatantly.  I don't think we need to rehash that one.

I (and others it would seem) would be of the opinion that you invite a lot of this on yourself, but if you want to continue to cry victim, be my guest.

Ah should be just like you, a follower or sheep, say what everyone wants to hear to be popular....

Oh the irony!  From the leader of Rory's flock!  I reckon you'd get away with just not telling lies to stir things though!

Well, you should watch the fight then. More comprehensive than Conlon's. He's either incompetent or crooked.

The fight that the Irish ref was in charge of was totally blatant. The fella who won was out on his feet at one stage and the ref was stopping the fight constantly to give him time to recover.

What a beautiful sport that's dirty from top to bottom, amateur or pro. Boxing is crying out for a UFC-type organisation to unify the top tier under one flag. What's happening is the sport is being destroyed.

Maybe so but he is either totally incompetent, totally subservient to the AIBA or totally corrupt. I don't believe it was the former so take your pick from the other two. Watch the fight again and tell me how anyone who had never even seen a boxing match before could give the decision to the Russian let alone a man with his experience. He give the last round to the Russian when he was absolutely pumelled ffs. It is interesting that he was one of the judges sent home though whilst others who judged on this fight and on the Conlon fight have remained. A bit of window dressing by the AIBA and they probably decided that the Irish man was expendable after Conlon had highlighted their crookedness and totally embarassed them with his post match comments.

Seems they are going more pro style overall. Personally I prefer it without the headguards, even if they did prevent a lot of cuts.

If Ireland continues to send boxers to this farce they might consider going with a different type of boxer. More aggressive fighters rather than technically good boxers might get more joy. Saying that, in the heavyweight, the aggressor and better boxer lost. But that's another story altogether I suspect.

Top class boxer, him and Conlon should have been in the final on Saturday. That said the US boxer is a very good fighter too so it's no given that Ramirez will actually beat him.

Conlan is exactly the sort of fighter who would relish fighting a top class opponent and perform even better because of it. He's the world champion ffs, to assume he's lose is nonsense of the highest order.

They reckoned that the extra weight of the head guard actually contributed more negatively than positively, in that the greater momentum generated with head movement (after a smack) generated greater forces on the brain.

Obviously, women have much smaller brains, so it's completely logical for them to carry on wearing head guards for the foreseeable. ;)

Cuban boxing was a product of the state. A product of the cold war. Resources were put into it. Their best fighters never went pro.Stevenson was a puppet.  Cuba is opening up a bit and things have moved on thankfully.

Cuba and East Germany similar imo. In Montreal East German women won 11 of 13 events in swimming!  The wonder madchens. How many Germans won in the pool in Rio?
And people think this Olympics is dodgy.
Marita Koch (East Germany) still holds the 400 metre record since 1985 I think. 31 years!! How sad is that. Alyson Felix couldn t beat it. That record stands out as a disgrace to the sport. Thank God that Chinese Wang Junxia's 10,000 record is gone. While there might be ??s about the Ethiopian girl the Chinese was definitely rotten.

The reason Marita Koch's record still stands is the same reason Wang Junxia's record was never under threat for so long and, I believe, is probably the same reason that Junxia's has been just smashed to pieces. All sides of the same grubby coin.

Conlon v Ramirez would be a tight fight.  They fought when they were younger at a lighter weight.  Conlon has significantly improved since 2012 and seems better at BW, whereas Ramirez hasn't been as impressive in the 4 years since.

Find it so interesting to read about how Cuba became such a boxing powerhouse.  Would love to know how Kazakhstan have became such a force now.
