Ten minutes of a Monaghan 'power play' period in the second half was good enough to put the space between the teams. Westmeath are a very good team but couldn't stay the pace in the 2nd half even with a stronger wind at their back.  Now it's prayer time for Rory's fitness, hopefully it was just precautionary, he did go straight down the tunnel.

Was a wee bit nervous at HT I half to say, we weren't at our best but doing alright - but conceding 2 fairly preventable goals was pretty disappointing, and that gave Westmeath alot of confidence going into the break - and at that point you never know how things will pan out. Whittaker was causing havoc down that right side and he seemed to have the run of the pitch every time, but subbing on McGorman to mark him was a great tactical switch and his influence was greatly curtailed from there on

Still thought we were pretty scrappy starting the 2nd half and gave away the ball a few times too easily - but that purple patch midway through the half came from us, and thankfully that period gave us the cushion to be *somewhat* comfortable in the final 10 minutes. Alot of players stood up when the game was in the melting pot which is very encouraging. Some talk now about Beggan seeing as he came off, hopefully if there was any knock then it's only precautionary and he's grand for next week. Not many players more important or influential to their team

Four black cards to start extra time

That's a serious cop out by the GAA. Standard is in a melee, just black card 2 from each team. 

What else can they do?

They could apply the correct rules for starters. Contributing to a melee is a straight red card, not a black.

Only time I have ever seen this was armagh vs tyrone. Gaa continually ignoring their own rules

The melee rule has changed. It's a Black card now, not a Red.

Why this has to be explained to knowledgeable people is crazy, even worse in local club games.

I wonder might the new licensing rules "encourage" both McGuinness and McGeeney to make the switch from intercounty to club football sooner rather than later.

With County Boards having to account for every penny spent on county teams and Croke Park having far more control over spending, it really looks like it will put a serious hitch in the full-time intercounty manager.

Both of them are likely to be able to make more money in the next year or two managing club teams until the rules on clubs spending money are tightened up.

So 5 first round winners and 3 losers make up the last 8. Not maybe the huge advantage that winning your first game was supposed to bring. It's a strange system. We moved away from 6 day turn arounds for losers only to return to it.

I'll see how next week pans out before I make any determinations ok it.

This year maybe one, red cards in the past, a few, could I have given a lot more? Most definitely

It's a can of worms once opened so I understand the reluctance of some refs
