GAA Discussion / Incidental Contact
July 20, 2014, 07:25:31 PM
Can a y student of the rulebook tell me if incidental physical contact is specifically allowed under the tackling rules.
Listened to Tom Carr today claim it was ok for 3 or 4 players to slap an opponent round the head because it was part of a physical contact sport.

With a bi-lateral agreement struck at a personal level between Kenny/Noonan and Merkel/Schaeuble to support Irelands exit from the bailout and now Deutsche Bank announcing 700 jobs in Dublin, are we moving closer to being a de-facto province of the Federal Republic.

The old Blueshirts haven't gone away you know.

If the FA's Nth and Sth were genuinely interested in promoting soccer they would find a sponsor/s for an 11 team professional soccer league offering franchises across the island.
2 in Munster, 1 in Connaught, 4 in Ulster an 4 in Leinster
Fixed manageable budgets for full time professional franchises and build from there.

GAA Discussion / Grumpy old man...nerisms
July 15, 2013, 12:02:42 AM
From Croke Park Today.

The old chestnut, people arriving last minute before throw in.
Whoever decied that there needs to be a constant wall of noise pumped through the speakers. Ads on the big screen, Aslan and Thin Lizzy when The Dubs were going to the hill. You couldnt hear the chanting of teh crowd on the hill. I'd rather listen to whatever noise is generated by the crowd than the junk that the marketing men push down everyones throats. Detracts from the sporting contest.

I know its been done to death but it has to change.
Changing structure wont make bad teams better overnight but it might help them make progress.

My suggestion for what its worth. (feck all I know)

1  GAA Season = Feb to Oct
2 Scrap Prelim competitions O'Byrne, McKenna etc
3 League in 4 divisions as now but teams play everyone twice home and away
4 League runs alongside championship right through the summer and finishes in Oct
5 Provincial championships stay but are seperate from All Ireland
6 Championship starts Mid May with Rd 1  =  Div 3 and Div 4 teams only in an open draw played one weekend 4 games sat and 4 sun
7 Rnd 2 = R1 winners in open draw with Div 2 teams, played over one weekend in mid June 4 sat and 4 sun
8 Rnd 3 = Rnd 2 winners in open draw with Div 1 teams, played over one weekend in July, 4 sat 4 sun
9 QF - 8 winners from Rnd 3  played as now
10 SF and Final played as now

Hurling Championship in a similar fashion on alternate dates with League games filling in the gaps so theres national gaa every weekend Feb to Oct

Just a personal view but the professionalism being adopted by county teams has turned Gaelic Football into a very hard to watch sport.
In contrast I really enjoyed the Crossmaglen / Errigal game on Sunday. Lots of long kicking and as a result lots of fielding as well as good score taking and passing movements. This is what I want to see when I go to a Gaelic Football match.
For ball retention, crossfield passing movements and off the shoulder running I'd rather go to a rugby match.

Hurling Discussion / Offaly Camogie
August 08, 2012, 12:26:24 PM
Since there is no camogie forum just wanted to say well done to Offaly camogie on reaching the all ireland semis. Their rapid rise from junior thru inter into senior has been amazing.
Wish their male conterparts, big and small ball codes,  would take a lead from the girls.

GAA Discussion / The Blue Wave

Despite team costs of €2m Dublin still manage to turn a surplus of €92k, while all around them neighbouring counties lie decimated by deficits.
And yet, like Oliver Twist, they think they should have some more.

I must be missing something.      ???

Went to Declan O'Rourke in Sligo saturday night. Great entertainer. Been to see him 4/5 time now in small venues in Carrick, Sligo, Mohill. Usually acoustic but this time he had a drummer and baseplayer along with his usual celloist. Even took out a shiny new electric guitar for a few songs. And doesnt take himself too seriously which makes for good entertainment.

General discussion / How Long Has The Euro Got
November 23, 2011, 05:49:18 PM
Today Baroso and Rhenn announce proposals for Eurobonds and the power for EU technocrats to take over your country if they dont like the cut of your jib, claiming national democracy must be counterbalanced by European democracy.    :o
At the same time Angela Merkel  "again" rules out Eurobonds as an option.  And the ECB maintain it will not become lender of last resort.

Its a complete fiasco.  Get ready for the punt I think.

How will you vote when we are asked if we want to stay in the Euro and have financial control imposed from the EU or keep our own independence and go back to the Punt ?
