Well, finally it's gone.  Crisis resolved and firmly in middle age.

Replaced it with a Mercedes C220 CDI Estate with carpets to match the slippers but no smoking allowed. Economy and comfort have replaced speed and the bone shaking suspension.

Good man. Better mpg no doubt too!

Averaging 49 mpg over last 7000 miles with an eco engine with stop/start.  Best to date has been 60 mpg from Omagh to Belfast and the same on Omagh to Dublin by keeping to 70 mph on the dual carriageway and motorway.  Apparently a manual gearbox would do even better but not bad for 170 hp diesel with an auto gearbox.

This compares to an average over all driving in the Audi of 29 mpg and a best of 35 mpg on a long journey.
