It is a bitch to set up. I have mine a year and only sorting it now, but certainly worth the outlay for GTA online alone.

I play online but im in the middle of move to dubai so havnt played much lately and ive have renew my subscription, I play COD4 and just got the FIFA09, even though up to now ive been proevo man.

Race driver grid too is an outstanding car game.

COD4 is the best game ive ever played. Online is great fun...i'll be back on online when im in dubai. I'll send ya my gamertag. COD 5 World at war is based on WW2 all right, i think its different developers this time though, its out NOV 14th tomorrow.

Never played GOW yet but will do soon, the trailer for the GOW2 looks class.

Get the firmware upgrade about £50. This allows you to then play copies of games.  I can get them at £5 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than £40 in most shops.   For the price of 2 games it pays for itself

Yeah lets stick to this one, Cant wait for COD5, i am a bit worried though, as said modern warfare was class. So realistic. Great gameplay. Going back to WW2 might slow the pace down a notch. New develpers mightin be as good.

Trailers look class and there are loads of new features.

Bensars whats this about games for fiver? Pm me on that one location, and can you order from them and get it sent on, cheers.

There's a few

Call of Duty 4
Bioshock
Gears of War 2
Fallout 3
Dead Space
GTA 4

All very good. Then there's the usual sports games as well and driving ones if you're into those.

The World at War is pretty good too but Call of Duty 4 is the best one. Xbox live is excellent if you're into multiplayer. Just make sure you have a good enough internet connection.

can't get into world at war. Those old WWII Guns are just crap!

COD 4 is much better.
Hardly every played the 1player game. Online play is much better.

Couldn't really get into GTA IV either after wasting half my final year of Uni playing san andreas i think i over done it!

got an xbox for christmas from my brother! shocker i no dunno what came over him.
anywho... one of the games with it was Fry Cry 2... Cracking game. Also Gears of war 1 & 2 and Pro Evo all brilliant.
Having previously been a Playstation man have to say x-box far surpasses it.

It's downloadable add-in for GTA4 on the xbox. The idea is it uses all the same game engine as the original game but adds a completely new storyboard mode/missions to follow (different characters). Basically it's like a totally new game.

1600 gamer points - around 15, 16 quid. Think the download was 1.6 gig, so expect there is practically a completely new game, character wise and mission wise. Its still played out in Liberty City but thee are new cars, possibly new music ect.

I'm interested in the new online modes more, as it's a game IMHO never really worked online thus far.

I play online - have you noticed really bad lag online from last weekend?

Its got virtually unplayable albeit not as bad as last years Pro Evo but it's really annoying at the moment as I though EA had nailed the online gameplay.

I'm sick waiting on the price of the PS3 to come down, thinking of taking the plunge towards the xbox, what's the difference between the premium one and the elite, is it just the memory?

and I take it everyone here would recommend it over the ps3?

Memory and Elite includes a HDMI cable also, I think.

I personally would go for the bigger hard drive, especially with an increase in downloadable content and HD movies. I also prefer to install my games on the hard drive too (Final Fantasy XIII is rumored to be multiple discs too - so i'd much prefer to add it to the hard drive) as it runs quieter.

IMHO it's a better buy than the PS3 and I have both. I hardly switch on the PS3 compared to the XBox and XBox live is so much better a product than PSNetwork, people will always pay for a better product. Graphics wise there is no real difference, well none that some of the Sony fan boys on here would be able to notice and the so called "Sony Cell super processor" and the Xbox processor are both designed by IBM and based on the same initial processing core. In fact quite a few of games look better on the xbox and run at higher resolution.
If its a games system you want, the superior catalogue of games on the XBox makes it the logical choice. If you want a blu ray player too, then possibly consider the PS3 but it is rumored that sony will be releasing a PS3 without blu ray in order to drop the price and thus compete with MS and Nintendo. There are also very few games companies developing games exclusively for blu ray due to the increased licensing costs, development costs ect... Personally in the current financial climate games studios will be reluctant to develop titles to exclusively take advantage of this feature, especially when it's not needed (downloadable content is the future).

Not fussed on bluray.  Dont know about the bigger memory, do all the downloading I want through the computer.  The main thing that attracts me to the xbox is the price, reasonable, compared to 300 quid on a ps3.

Personally in the current financial climate games studios will be reluctant to develop titles to exclusively take advantage of this feature, especially when it's not needed (downloadable content is the future).

thanks.
Not fussed on bluray.  Dont know about the bigger memory, do all the downloading I want through the computer.  The main thing that attracts me to the xbox is the price, reasonable, compared to 300 quid on a ps3.

Pints I take it you're a bit like me? Play the odd time and not really into eg don't understand all this downlaodable content, streaming etc. If so, get the normal, no need for the extra.

Aye, I've been reading a few websites there and my choice is between the 60gb one and the elite.

Now, I'm leaning towards the 60gb one.
I gather that the only differences between the 60gb and the elite is the memory and the cable.
I don't have a HD Tv yet so I don't need the cable yet, and am I right in thinking when I do get the HD TV I can just buy the cable?
I don't really understand why you'd need 120gb worth of memory on a console, any downloading I do is on the computer and from what I can gather I'll be able to stream any films or that, on the computer, through the xbox to watch on the telly?  So I really don't need that extra memory.

Loading the games on to the xbox would be handy though, how much space would one game take up?
Is it really as noisey as everyone says?
Isn't the 50 quid price tag on the wireless thing ridiculous!

Anyways, I think I'll go for the 60gb one.

Definitely go for the 60gig minimum though (think its the same price as the 20gig now) - I've at least 20gig worth of downloadable games on my hard drive, including the new GTA4 add-on (basically a full new game and can only be downloaded) and loads of classic games. All this stuff is available through XBox live and trust me you will end up filling up a hard drive very quickly, plus upgrading a hard drive later is costly. MS and game studios will start distributing more and more content through XBox live, especially after the success of the new GTA.

It's just under 5 gig to load a game - you still need to insert the disc though just to prevent piracy. Its not overly loud but I prefer playing from the hard drive as it runs cooler and I want to make sure I don't get the 3 red lights. You won't have the 3 reds issue "probably" as you will get one of the new spec machines which run cooler anyway.

Yeah I agree the wireless is a rip off, but again if you don't need it, you don't have to pay for it.

aaaah now I'm leaning towards the elite!

I take it you have to pay to download the games?  Are they same prices as in the shops?
Is it possible to download games from torrent sites straight to the xbox?

alternatively pints if you dont want to sent films wirelessly you can get an external harddrive and just plug into the usb ports hence no burning dvds.

You can get a firmware upgrade that allows you to play copied games, however some firmware upgrades have been identified and banned from live. If you play stand alone games (ie. not with some random stranger over the internet) then its not a problem

I have all my downloaded stuff on an external drive. Can I just plug that in to the xbox if I want to watch something on the TV? or does it need to go through the computer?

Plug and play. Depending on how long the unit has been in the box in a store somewhere you may need to update the codec on it. Plug in internet cable and it should detect straight away. takes 2 minutes.

No bother at all with external HD

I was looking at this...apparently it needs to be it format flat32 and mine already is, so should be ok. Excellent!
Thanks.

(My external harddrive is in operation every day and I've a ridiculous amount of memory on the laptop!- only 40gb, about 17gb left!)

What you got to remember is you can't download from XBox live to an external drive or run games(full/demos) from it. You can play non drm content through the external which is fine for music and video (provided its supported).

If for example you buy the 2 downloadable GTA4 games, your probably taking close to 7 gig. Now if I've already payed 15 quid each for them so I'm not going to delete them. I think this model will become more popular in the current financial climate, the game engine is there on the original game you purchased so why not release updates/new games through XBox live. The lower distribution costs/ability to control piracy ect .... is very appealing to the game studios at the moment.

The 60 gig version is good value though but I wouldn't consider the smaller one.

Yeah I remember when I first got it, was no where near a hard as it is now. Once you get to level 18 its much better, you can do hardcore deathmatch - none of this pumping 20 bullets into someone to kill them. Just come off COD with one of my finest games in Pipeline - 32 kills, 3 helicopters ...... ;D

Sorry lads, did not make myself clear.

When i got the xbox360 the trigger was fine, but when i bought newer controllers they had changed that r1 position trigger, sprinting in pro ev is far harder with the new style button. Looks identical but there is an extremely subtle, but crucial, difference.

Guys,
My xbox live account has ran out so I don't play online anymore, but the xbox is still physically attached to my router. On Friday it asked me to install an update. It took ages but installed.
I play movies I've downloaded off a usb hard drive plugged into the xbox. Since I downloaded the update, none on my mp4 or avi movies on the hard disk will play. It throws up a message saying that an update needs to be installed to play the file type, I try and install the update and it says its already been downloaded, I download again and it just continues in this circle.

Have any of the rest of you had this problem?

Also, when playing halo, can 2 people play online using the same xbox with split screen? think i might pay for xbox live again

Hmmm I had a problem like that few weeks ago but I went manually in to something to find the download that allowed me to watch the stuff and downloaded it again and it was fine.  If you look through the marketplaces you might find it.  I'm trying to find it here now but it's not connected to the net so I dont have full access to those sections.

Failing that Id ring them or even try the xbox forums, there's the offical forum and http://forum.teamxbox.com/ (http://forum.teamxbox.com/), (which is quite good) maybe you could ask on there.

Xbox console ban is 'permanent'
By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

Modern Warfare 2 on shop shelves
The ban may have been timed for the release of Modern Warfare 2

Thousands of Xbox 360 owners who have been cut off from Microsoft's Xbox Live service will have to buy a new console if they want to play online again.

Microsoft told BBC News that banned machines will be permanently barred and "unable to connect to Xbox Live".

A message displayed on affected consoles said there was "no recourse for terms of use violations".

Microsoft has barred as many as 1m gamers from Xbox live for modifying their consoles to play pirated games.

"Users of banned Xbox consoles can recover their profile to another, unmodified Xbox 360 console to resume their Live service," the firm told BBC News.

"The banned console will be unable to connect to Xbox Live."

However, modified consoles will still work offline.

'No recourse'

Microsoft said barring gamers was part of an ongoing drive to curb piracy.

But a statement from them suggests this latest wave was timed to prevent people from playing pirated versions of the widely-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Microsoft

"We can assure you that if an Xbox Live member follows the Xbox Live terms of use, purchased a retail copy of Modern Warfare 2 and played the game on an unmodified Xbox 360, no action will be taken," the firm said.

Microsoft said that it had banned a "small percentage" of the 20 million Xbox Live users worldwide.

Many gamers modify their consoles by installing new chips or software that allows them to run unofficial - but not always illegal - programs and games.

Xbox gamer on being cut off

Some BBC News website readers claimed that they had "modded" their consoles to allow them to make back-ups of games that they had already bought.

"Discs are very fragile things and some users like to have their games backed up," said Donald Glass of Aberdeen.

"After all you will have paid £40 for a new disc. It is my opinion that once you buy a disc you should be allowed to do whatever you want with the media as long as you do not break copyright laws."

Microsoft has not said how it was able to determine which gamers to disconnect.

"We do not reveal specifics, but can say that all consoles have been verified to have violated the terms of use," the firm said in a statement.

It said that gamers who had been barred were using their modified consoles to "play illegally pirated games".

"We believe that even one modified console on the system is one too many".

Industry figures suggest that piracy may cost the video game industry as much as £750m a year.

Reports have speculated that new "mods" could soon be on the market that allow gamers to get round the blocks.

Haven't been caught out as such but I have a real problem with this as there is no way to have the ban lifted apparently, even if you have been banned in error.  My problem though is that a lot of people, who I know who have had to have their dvd drives replaced (because they have stopped working) have now fallen victim to the ban, likewise people who have bought second hand consoles or worse been given refurbished consoles from Microsoft

In response to the Madden 2010 Q earlier.

It's great.

Is it much different to the previous ones?

The weapons thing is gone. It's tougher, tackling feels better, especially gang tackles. AI is improved alot, it plays a much better game of football.

One great example is this: in 09 the QB had an awful habit of leading receivers out of bounds with passes. Happened all the time to both the player and the AI. That is eliminated.

It just plays a better fame of football, looks and feels more accurate.

I think it's the best Madden.

The other big thing is more realistic player ratings. Eg you can feel the difference between a Megatron/ AJ80/ Larry Fitz and a poor receiver now. They've also made the ratings more sensible e.g. Larry Fitz is about 97-99, as he was in 09. TJ houshama is about an 84, he would have been a 94 in 09. Much better.

We believe that even one modified console on the system is one too many

Many gamers modify their consoles by installing new chips or software that allows them to run unofficial - but not always illegal - programs and games.
anybody on here get caught out, seems to be done to correspond with cod

Just reading on the forum they'll investigate it now if you ask them, if you're trying it on though you lose your gamertag and all your content as well.

If you want to have it wireless you'll need a wireless adapter that will cost 50 or 60 quid.  Or you could run the cable from the router to the xbox (like me).
Then you'll need a subscription if you want to be a gold member, 30-35 quid for the year.

I fully recommend xbox elite.  that will let you install the games your playing (meaning the xbox will be silent while you play, wont heat up etc) and will let you download from the xbox marketplace.

What sort of games do you think you'll like? If you like racing I fully recommend forza motorsport and the microsoft steering wheel!

COD & Bad company (new one out in march probably best to wait for it) have to be on top of the list. People reave about gears of war, halo etc though they're not really my type of game but you might like them (I like to shoot people rather than creature like things).  You should give GTA a go, not sure if you'll like it but it's one of my favourites.

Get yourself a pair of powerline adpaters (200 Mbps) for about the same money as the offical wireless adapter (40-50 notes), it runs the signal through your electric cables so you don't need to drape ethernet cables about the house, its as fast as the best wireless and you never got a dropped signal (i was tortured with this using wireless).
They are plug and play so you can unplug it and use it for a laptop/desktop (unlike the official wireless connector) if you want or you can buy another one or two to build up the network. Anywhere you have a plug socket you have an internet and networking connection.

They really are the dogs dangles i have my four of them which i use for connecting to the internet and streaming media about the place.

Could be just the scart lead or the scart connection at the back of the telly that is loose?

Can't see there being anything wrong with the xbox unit itself if the fan is running and lights are coming on.

I wouldn't go opening it up at all unless you are experienced at that sort of thing!  How long have u got it?  Microsoft warranty is pretty good and they'll fix most things hassle-free, but if the unit casing is opened at all the warranty is void.

Did u try anything else in that scart socket (like a dvd player) to see if that might be the problem?  Or have u checked the xbox on a different tv?

Hey there,
being a member of the hard of hearing community, I have become reliant on the use of subtitles when watching movies.
I have some movies in avi file in hd quality on a memory stick that i also have the subtitle (.srt) file for.
I can watch the movies on my laptop with the subtitles but would love to be able to make use of the hd by watching it through the xbox. However, it doesn't seem to recognise the subtitle file.
Can anyone shed any light on how to rectify this or even suggest how i can hardwrite the subtitles into the movie without losing any quality.
thanks,

Delboy, they sound like a great job alright!  So basically do you have a cable from the router going into the wall through a socket, which runs the signal through the electricity cables, and then another adaptor in the socket beside the xbox with a cable going into it from the xbox?

I have had an xbox 360 for a few years now, but am only getting round to going online with it.

What is the best way to go about this, is all i need an xbox wireless router, and a live subscription for a year or so?

I have wireless in the house at the minute for my broadband connection. Is it simply a matter of connecting the wireless router to the xbox, and then logging into the subscription?

cheers

it's not as sluggish as fifa world cup
players respond a lot quicker and make runs more, opposition players react a lot quicker too and don't stand like mellons.

In saying that the gameplay is never going to be majorly different, what do you boys expect?

PES is shit.

I've read a few reviews saying it is gonna be good this year
Play the demo...

I wouldnt mind the demos they don't always be the same as the full version

Going by this review I will definitely  buy it

;) thanks Puck
You don't pay any attention to the demos but would buy the game on the basis of one review?  ???

Played the PES 11 demo today, thought it was excellent much better than previous versions, and between that and all the good reviews I will be buying it without a doubt, might trade in Fifa 11 for it as my Fifa 10 is almost the same as it,bit of a waste of money tbh.

When I went to play my xbox this morning it said no profile was detected. When I tried to create a new profile it says that no storage device was detected. It was working fine last night. There should be a load of space left on the hard drive.
Anyone ever experience this before? How could I fix it?

Pretty much agree with everything they say, especially the the bit on the 360 movement FIFA has and PES outdated animations. Each to their own but FIFA is the better game in every department. FIFA 10 was probably one of the best sports simulations ever created, it was going to be hard to improve on that this year and while the changes are not as noticeable, EA have kept it simple and refined a game which is probably still miles ahead of this years PES.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on which one they like or to blindly stick to a series because of some misguided brand loyalty; but when you put the 2 side by side and look at them both objectively, there is only one winner. I for one don't see how the PES series can survive now, it's another dog of a game which will only force more people to try FIFA. PES 08 was the worst in the series and that coupled with the fact FIFA 09 was superb convinced me to switch. I know I've seen nothing to convince me of wasting 40 odd euros to switch back.

I was a big gamer in school and college but I have not played as much in recent years.

Im getting an XBox 360 soon and its my first console since the PS2 which I stopped playing about 3-4 years ago.

Is there a list of Must Play games for the 360 in the last few years I could look out for and get second hand?
Anyone want to give me their top 5?  ;)

Some must haves but there is so much I could never pick my top 5

Modern Warfare 2
FIFA 11
Halo Reach
Rock Band 3
GTA4 (Just cause I think it's probably the first game that can be classed as a work of art)

Keep an eye out on Amazon over the next few days if your thinking of buying a console. They are having a massive sale for Black Friday and they were advertising Xbox 360 as having 60% off RRP but its first come first served i think.

Depends, what sort of games you like?  There's loads of good games you can pick up for f**k all second hand.

For anyone who cares...my top 5 would be (in no particular order):
COD: Modern Warfare 2
Gears of War (both of them)
Batman: Arkham Asylum
GTA4
Red Dead Redemption

All very similar games, don't care much for sports games any more and this year is the first year I won't be buying FIFA or Pro Evo! Would highly recommend having a look through Xbox Live Arcade, some brilliant older titles available for download.

To simplify - how does a Xbox 360 connect to the internet, specifically for online play, is a wireless connection??

The older consoles don't have wireless built in - you have to buy a wireless adapter separately which isn't the cheapest thing in the world and not the most reliable either I've heard.

The newer ones have wireless built in.

If I was using an older version without wireless I'd be tempted to use two of those things that carry data over your electric wires in the house - you just plug them into th socket and then plug your ethernet cables into them. Sounds a lot more reliable than the wireless and you can use them for things other than the xbox. I also think they're not far off the same price as the xbox adapter.

You fancy trying the towel trick. Plenty of IT shops about the place offer a fixer no charge policy on the three rings so I think you should be grand. Mplex in Belfast and a place on Stockmans lane have a good rep for it.

Don't do the towel trick, it'll only make the problem worse. If you're anyway handy electronic wise there is a really cheap and easy way of fixing it. I've done it on about 6 consoles and it worked on all but one of them that just seemed to be completely banjaxed. It just involves taking the console apart and cleaning the thermal paste of the cpu and gpu (which is just plastered on) and applying new paste neatly. That might sound a bit complicated to those unfamiliar with the terms but there are kits you can buy on amazon with all the equipment you need as well as step by step instructions. They're only about 3-4 quid and sure as hell beats forking out 100+ for a new console. Here's a link

I did this and replaced the x clips that hold the heat sinks down but still have the 3 rings - I'm not sure if I've missed a step or something

1) Took the xbox apart
2) Cleaned thermal paste off and applied new paste
3) Reconnected heat sinks using new screws and washers
4) Put all back together and turned it on

I've left it on for about an hour with the red rings flashing and tried restarting it (I'd read that sometimes you need to do this to give it time to start working again) but the red rings are still there. Any other advice before I go and fork out for a new xbox?

Did it change to two red lights at any point? You've missed a vital step. Before putting it all back together you have to overheat the gpu to let the thermal paste do its job (also make sure you really clean the past of thoroughly before reapplying. So basically you have to plug the xbox in while its still taken apart, but place the fan facing down on top of the cpu but NOT the gpu. You turn the xbox on for a 30 minutes or so and wait for the lights to change to just two which means the console has overheated. Then turn it all off and leave it to cool for a while and it should work. That's it as far as I can remember as it has been a while since I did it. Usually the kits have a step by step instruction guide that go into a lot more detail. Again there was one I tried all of this on a few times over and it didn't work. If you need anymore help give me a shout, sorry if that sounds a bit complicated!

Heard that Battlefield 3 is an incredible game and will overhaul Call of Duty this time around. Modern Warfare does look stunning as well so I am undecided as well  ;D

Saw the trailer for GTA 5 and it looks very impressive. Finally, a return to San Andreas. Cant wait for this one with May 2012 being touted as a possible release date

He's right thought Battlefield is intended as a multiplayer-first game. I remember back in the day passing many an hour playing battlefield 2 64 player multiplayer on the PC. People expecting a big singlet player campaign are mixing this game up with Battlefield: Bad Company. Which is not a sequel to.

Oh Ive played all the Battlefields previously on PC I just found all of them better than the current one is on the xbox. I wasn't expecting the greatest single player game ever made but I expected a good bit better. The Modern Warfare 3 single player is vastly superior even if it does seem to have included some disturbing content just to be controversial

After getting a Xbox 360 there a couple of days ago - the 250 GB one with Call of Duty: World at War (I reckon it's an auld one)... Jaysus its a great job.  Eventually got the Xbox Live thingy up and running so playing online full time

Any recommendations on games?  Any decent strategy games out there or stick to the PC for games like that?

Dilemma guys - young fella wants new headset for 360 - main choices are:

(1) One of these wireless bluetooth boys like this: http://www.gamestop.co.uk/42122_Xbox_360_Wireless_Bluetooth_Headset_MW3.aspx (http://www.gamestop.co.uk/42122_Xbox_360_Wireless_Bluetooth_Headset_MW3.aspx)
(2) Turtle Beach wired with the puffy ear jobs for about £45
(3) Cheap as chips wired for about £10

Any recommendations?

Would go for one of the wired options. The wireless ones are poor for picking up sound.

Got Battlefield 3 there just before Christmas - flipping deadly game!  Haven't got the multiplayer up and running on it yet but I believe its the business too.

Picked up Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversay too.  Obviously a bit dated now but not as much as you'd think after 10 years.  Got it so I can kinda play the Halo series in order rather grab the most recent one first.  The mulitplayer on it is very good - like you can play on your own in it against AI enemies

Anything else I should be on the lookout for??

i recommend you DONT buy mw3,same old shit,if you haven't got the reactions of a 15 year old you're fucked. Stick with the battlefield, online multiplayer is awesome, and its not full of boosting teenagers with all their hacks and cheats.

I took the 1 month free trial a few months back, the selection is almost overwhelming with something like 70,000 films and that's not even including the TV series!

Did you continue it after the trial? If not - Why not?

Lads, (because clearly none of the females on this board are allowed in this thread) I'm looking for a new game to buy and play...

At the minute I've got Halo Anniversay, CoD: World at War and Battlefield 3 but I've clear the Campaign modes and I've just been playing it online the last while and now.... I'm ready for another challenge..

Any suggestions???

And can I play Halo 2 on the Xbox360 and where would I get a copy?
