If it's deemed to be delaying the game the ref can take it forward 50m from a mark.

Not sure why Kilpatricks wasn't moved up as well though.

I think my issue is that I have a real problem when games turn and/or are decided on officials making mistakes on the rules which have seen both happen and nearly happen a number of times this year. If the referee gave a mark and moved it forward I have a real issue with that because it's unarguably wrong and something that should not happen. There's no interpretation to that it's simply wrong.

If on the other hand he gave the free (incorrectly in my opinion) but correctly moved it forward I am far less annoyed because ultimately the decision to award the free is open to interpretation and the ref gets one chance to look at it in real time from a different angle than I do. So my interpretation of whether it was correct or incorrect is largely irrelevant.

My issue is we don't know and probably won't ever because after the fact it's very easy to say that was moved because I blew for a foul.

I also don't think referees get enough help from a number of different underlying issues within the association but that's maybe a debate for a different topic.

I watched it back on gaaplus there. The only arm movement I could find from the ref is after Kilpatrick impedes the kicking action. Unless theres another angle somewhere else I still believe it to be a huge mistake from the referee.

Because thats no longer the rules. Neither should have been brought up. Its irrelevant if the mark has been claimed or not. It simply changes if from a mark to a free kick from that position.

I can see why the umpire got it wrong, it looked initially it hit defenders toe, got it wrong, thought the ref was going to have a sneaky look at the big screen on that one, the mark mistake could be as David described was a free given then impeded, think I missed that one, what was the linesman one?
Nobody to blame but ourselves anyway. Yes you need those decisions to go for you but Conn giving away 2 points to Clifford, not laying a hand on Kerry for their kickouts and missing those chances is what killed us

Is there a difference in penalty between when a foul occurs within 4m of the mark rather than just preventing the taking of the mark by what would be an otherwise lawful challenge?

I can't seem to find a definitive answer from the rule book but that's hardly a surprise

No its still treated as the same play of the game. Blocking the attempt at a kick or immediately tackling within the 4m changes a mark to a free kick.

Rule 5.42 states:
Notwithstanding any other provision in these Rules, where a foul is committed for the purpose of delaying play, the penalty shall, (in addition to being cautioned or ordered off, where appropriate) be a free kick 50m more advantageous than the position where the foul occurred – up to the opponent's 13m line

Might that be why?

No he just made a mistake on the mark one, plain and simple. Its at the start of the clip on this tweet.

I don't think I can tell from that clip. There's another angle I saw last night that made it look like his arm started going out for a free kick just before the mark was taken but it was very hard to tell
Then there was definitely a mistake by the referee as there was absolutely no foul before the mark.

I don't think it was a foul but something happens with Mark O'Shea and two of the Tyrone players. So I can't discount that the ref gave a free from something there.
You can never discount the evidence of the invisible infraction :o  However the ref clearly blew his whistle to acknowledge the clean mark, was watching the play develop, observed the dunt into the back of the Kerry player, blew the whistle again immediately and only then did he  indicate  to bring the ball forward and all to the great approval of the match commentator.

The umpire in question is a man well into his 60s. Its farcical and everyone knows it. Visual acuity, mobility and age are not good bedfellows, and Tyrone should be demanding an independent optical/medical assessment be carried out immediately.

"Be grand" is not good enough any more in context of incredible efforts made by players /mgmt to get to the pinnacle of their sport.

The stakes are too high now for a "wee day out" for the refs mates.

It's a wonderful playbook David is reading from in his attempts to exonerate the referee. Muddy the waters, focus on a lesser charge of giving a non-existent free. I wonder his line of work.
Despite all that, anyone with a titter of wit will recognise that the ref made a mistake of moving a mark forward 50m.

Beggan out. Expected Louth to edge this but huge advantage now.

Starting to come around to MR2 way of thinking here. Don't think there's a need to slate an umpire and ref for something like that when in real time it's near impossible to tell. Our lads made more mistakes than the ref or umpire did

It's a wide unless the umpire sees something else to the contrary. On the ref, the least that can be expected is he knows the rules, his decision making re fouls etc is another thing altogether.
