I wouldn't be as critical as some. We did well to make a game of it out of such a poor kickout return. You are never going to win a game losing all your own lockouts and letting the opposition get theirs away every time.

We defended well and turned them over a lot, we were clinical in the first half every time we attacked.

The kickouts are a tactical point that can be fixed. Still think there is a good team there especially with the addition of Sargent

Meath are a good team and were good value for the victory. I really find it hard to explain Derry. On paper we look a really good team. On the field it's disjointed at times and we look devoid of confidence. I don't like criticising players but the team needs a injection of new energy. To be fair Murray, Forbes and Seargent could be serious talents for the next few years.

Overall though a really disappointing season and 3 defeats in a row in Championship. We are massive underachievers.

There's changes needed. McSmall, McEldowney etc. After Sargent them two I thought were very impressive.

I think there are at least 4 on the team who couldn't complain if they had a spell on the sidelines. How we have gone from 11 points ahead of Monaghan to this in a 6 weeks is pretty staggering. We can't keep blaming the manager. The players have not done enough. I don't doubt their commitment but they have got nowhere near the levels we expect of them.

This is totally on the management. The concerning thing is that performances have gotten worse from League to championship. The whole thing looks stale and it appears that management are incapable of changing it. This game was over long before the final whistle, it wasn't like we lost a close encounter. If the management doesn't change then the team and tactics have to. A rebuild of the team is required. A kick out strategy is essential. The talent from underage needs to be integrated into the existing structure. Management need help with this.

100%. I hope Ciaran stays about. This one year cycle of managers needs to stop. While some of this may be on management a big big part of our problem lies with the players. If they didn't have have fire in their bellies after the last couple of years and the laughing stock we had become esp last year then I don't know what it would take to put it in them. All in all another v disappointing season league and championship. Am not sure if some of the lads have had an eye in off the field ventures. It's rebuilding mode for us next league and it's time to start blooding the younger lads. That won't happen overnight either but it's where the future of Derry football lies.

Watching big Sargent tonight I could only think if we had him, Eamon Young on a healthy knee and Oisin Doherty a lad who kicked 13 or 14 in a game recently, all playing U20 this year. That's enough talent to brute force any lack of tactics upfront I think lol

On the game itself, our forward play was much better, but we were completely cleaned out on kickouts. Doesn't matter how good we could be in attack if we can't get the ball out the field.
Kickouts killed us the whole game. Too slow, wrong kicks, same kick every time and quite a few mistake directly leading to scores.
We couldn't catch a clean kickout, and we are so immature under breaking ball.
Tactically poor on kickouts. why scullion hasn't got a run in goals I do not know, given the issues with mcgukin.

I felt for Baker tonight, really struggled when Introduced then subbed Upper again. Was the wrong  sub to make.

Defensively, not enough agression or hunger, went to sleep too often and handed easy scores away.

without picking out players, we need a complete rethink. Unfortunately, this group needs major surgery.
Sargent was brilliant, Murray too. The young lads who came on all put a shift in. We need to focus on starting those younger lads next year, hold onto as many of the senior lads as possible, but they will need to buy into being impact subsand provide the depth we need. We just really need to rethink k who our starting 15 are and be brave enough to drop the right players.
I couldn't believe Loughlin didn't start.

Tactically we were poor, but I still have faith in Meenagh. I think we need a clear out of backroom team and bring in proven tactician and motivators.  Gilligan for example.

Disappointing season, but not without its highlights.
The way we beat Cork was impressive, we just need that kind of game consistant

Agree with most of that but I'd be gobsmacked if Gilligan comes anywhere near the Derry setup when Armagh are flying the way they are.

Agree with most of that but I'd be gobsmacked if Gilligan comes anywhere near the Derry setup when Armagh are flying the way they are.
