Tyrone need to avoid a relegation scenario and  win on home turf the odd time. Why would people go to games when there seems to be a lack of pride? Understand its early days and Kerry almost got nipped but surely name a strong team, draw the crowd and  Kildare away in first half?

Quote from: square_ball on January 25, 2026, 12:06:59 PMFor all our success at underage we do produce the same type of player. We'd need the odd big 6.5ft lump coming through.

I don't really agree, you play to your strengths and from what I see very few teams rely on size to win matches under the new rules. Galway are a classic example of a very big physical team who could not get to grips with the new rules last year and never really preformed.

I mean if we are blessed with a lot of small skilful players why do we not play to those strengths by playing a faster, less structured game? I actually believe pace and stamina are more important than ever in football as guys like Roarty, Ciaran Moore, o begley, P Clifford and Mick McKernan have shown.
This place is mad. You say we need to be less structured, others say we have no structure.
You say very few teams rely on size, I'd say Joe O Connor was massively influential last year.
David Clifford is the player he is, due partly to his size and power.

We need to stop twisting facts to suit our agenda

It makes sense to me. You play to the strengths you have in your team. We dont have big strong full forwards so we shouldnt play like we do. We have very skillful quick forwards who need fast early ball in. We dont play either style which is the problem. We dont lump high balls in to a target man as we havent got one, we dont play quick ball in either.

The game plan this last 2 years seems to be slowly transition into in opposition half, hand pass the ball around and hope one of our skillful forwards can produce some magic to work a score.

Like Kerry in the All Ireland final you mean ?

samuel maguire

Some of the posts on here are laughable. This is Tyrones level. They are miles off the top table. Too many of the same type of players.

All this talk about the Canavans - They have never consistently done it at county level. They are not the superstars and next coming of christ that some make them out to be.

Getting to the semis last year really flattered Tyrone.

They lost to Armaghs B team
They lost at home to Mayo
They beat an absolutely woeful Dublin - One of the worst quality 1/4 finals I have ever watched.
They beat a good Donegal side at home - Donegal caught on the hop after winning Ulster albeit.
Relegated from div 1
Kerry beat them in 3rd gear - who also missed a barrowful of chances
No style of play
Questionable S&C
Still don't know their best team

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Hand of God

Kerry relied massively on their size and physicality last year. The last 2 Championship meetings we have had with Kerry their backline has completely bullied our forward line. McCurry didn't get a sniff in either game.

We have the skills in the forward line but we need the physicality and ball winning ability to supplement them. The thing that separates Clifford is the physicality and pace he brings in addition to the ability he has. It makes him near impossible to stop under the new rules.

IMO we badly need a McGarrity or someone in there to make teams think twice about what we are going to do. We can't playing big long balls over the top as McCurry, Canavan etc won't win those regularly as they don't have the power or the bounce will catch them out. It needs to either be worked through the hands which can be held up or played low and fast on the deck or chest height which can be intercepted. Teams know this and they know how to stop it.

Armagh won an All Ireland with the likes of the two O'Neills, Soupy, Murnin, Turbitt, Grugan - all forwards who are physical and 6ft plus.

How many 5 ft 9/5 ft 10 players were in the Kerry starting line up last year?

We have a fair whack of our players who do have those physical limitations compared to other counties. One of them is our best player but maybe that's all the more reason we supplement his abilities with a bit more size around them.

I'd say we currently have in our inside forward line options:

Canavan 5ft9
McCurty 5ft10
McElholm 5ft9
R Canavan 5ft8
Jordan 5ft10

Contrast that to Kerry:

Clifford 6ft3
Sean O'Shea 6ft1
P Geaney 6ft1

McGarrity and Conroy are probably the only options inside we have over 6ft. Are they better forwards that those options listed? No. Do they offer something a bit different though? The answer to this is yet. We need to find the right balance in attack to get the best out of Canavan and McElholm and I don't think more than 3 of the 5 players listed above can function well on the pitch at the one time.

Our half forward line is a major worry. We don't have players who can put in the work and win that dirty ball but who can also trouble the scoreboard regularly.

A few days is a long time in football, alot of folk saying that Tyrone will be Kerry's biggest challengers now some are worrying about relegation.  I would expect the Kildare result is a blip and Tyrone will come out swinging at the weekend, especially given opposition.

Tyrone will have to use Jordan to kick both sided free kicks for the remainder of the year. Need McCurry back asap. Maybe do Derry* no harm losing the first game. Beat Derry this weekend to get the spirits back up. Tyrone seem to be effected by Healy Park. Impressed with Joey, Ben & Cassidy all playing sigerson during the week, Oguz took the goal well but quiet throughout. McKernain took out once again...

Sorry missed to include Derry. It would be some going for me to say the wrong outcome for a game I stood and watched for 70 minutes two days ago. Im not that old!!!!!!!!!!!! (yet)

Disappointing opening weekend for Tyrone with a number of poor performers. In saying that Tyrone missed enough to comfortably win the game and it certainly isn't all doom and gloom like some are saying.
Alot of people have been saying how Rory Brennan isn't good enough for 6 etc. I think the other night made the case that he is close to essential for holding the middle, we haven't any other player with his discipline in that position and we must bring him back into the team for the remainder of the league. Canavan and McElholm brought plenty of spark once introduced although wasteful and the full back line has potential and should be persisted with. Strange playing Cassidy at wing back when other defensive options were available, Cassidy himself done ok going forward and probably deserves a place in the forward line in a more natural position.
For Derry we probably need to make changes and not save as much for impact of the bench.

Am I the only one that thought Oguz didn't do overly bad? Played in the forward line at times and was there for the layoff passes. Could've done more as a midfielder but from what I've seen at club level he usually does well in the air. There was other players there more deserving of criticism

I don't think players are deserving criticism for a start. I never criticised anyone being quiet in the other nights game was a better way to put it as I was not getting into critiquing. First game missing 3/4 off the team, your one of the reasons the players don't get enough support jumping on the bandwagon when it suits and handing out abuse when it suits. The boys are going out to do their best.

Would like something like this, would put Cullen in and not sure about Joey/Cassidy as they will be playing sigerson in the middle of the week. Conor ONeill may get a chance in their place although playing sigerson didnt play at weekend. Hopefully Teague back soon but doubt will see game time in this one

Think Darragh could be held in reserve as sounds like he is only back training

tc_manchester

There also needs to be a mindset change amongst some. Check out the Kildare goal and watch our corner back on the goal line arguing with the umpire as the ball goes past him. You wouldn't allow that on an underage team.

How am I possibly a bandwagoner when I haven't been to any finals or semi-finals. I've been to maybe 8 Tyrone games and 6 of them were league games. How is that a bandwagon fan? I like to see my club players do well. I've attended more underage Tyrone games last year than I have senior games in my whole life to see players from my club play at the highest level they can. As I've said before I care more about my club than I do with Tyrone. I still watch every game that's on TG4, RTE, GAA+ etc
