Quote from: Doire on July 19, 2025, 01:12:08 PMA forwards coach in todays game would be really important.  We need to really focus on developing forwards.  With the new rules traditional pacey corner forwards who can take a man on one v one will be vital. Doesnt happen overnight though so coaching needs to start with the underage talent at development level. Lets think and plan aheah!
We have a very good one, he's just never fit.

Doire

Agreed that Lachlan Murray has all the attributes of a class forward ie. Pace , power, directness etc and has showed how deadly he can be.  If he was fully fit it would be massive.

Did McKaigue take the Maghera team that had so many complaints just before the rules changed in a game derided by many??
Was he not a leader in the recruitment of Devlin & Harte?
Was he leading & training with players during the manager hunt in the autumn, only to retire when Tally was named?
And if I remember correctly he was at fault for a goal last year because he was looking at the player while the ball was kicked to an empty net from distance.

From a very distant view he doesn't strike me as the answer you are looking for.
Nor McMahon for what it's worth.

McKaigue managed an unfancied maghera team to a hogan cup this year playing superb football. That shows he has managerial skills. The rest of the garbage you've written is completely irrelevant.

Blaming McKeigue cause the keeper wasn't in nets, oh boy! What about the other 3 in that game. Or the multiple that have followed since Donegal last year. Its no better a appointment  than the past 2 management's. Can't understand why Meenagh taking it now when we were in a better position  2 yrs ago and he went to Down.

So who do you think should have got it in all your wisdom?

I would say Meenagh left to put some distance between himself and the Gallagher mess. He as good a coach as there is about. Its better management team than the likes of Mc Entee, Mc Mahon that were linked.

As I said I'm viewing from a distance. Obviously far enough back for some to feel I'm way way off the target.

I suppose I'm wondering is he the answer you are looking for?
The goal was evidence for me of his nature as player whereby he focussed too much on the man and not the game. Some might say that's what made him so good - but I think he was a better footballer and hurler to be solely a direct man marker and ignoring the game so much.

As for Maghera, I wasn't aware of other games I just remember the one where there was a lot of complaint.

I suppose I'm debating the idea that he is a good choice - and I'm not sure.

It would be good to see Derry back up the standings as it always seems to be a county where whatever direction they are progressing or regressing the snowball effect takes over, so better to be optimistic when going well than pessimistic when going not so good.

Real Talk

C McKaigue wasn't just an excellent man-marker he also marshalled the whole defence and what about the fisted point he got against Mayo in the championship to get the draw that we then got the win in the penalty shoot-out !!!
If he becomes a part of the Derry back-room team he will give it 100% commitment.

100% agree with this. He will set unbelievably high standards that will only benefit the squad.

And as all Derry GAA supporters both club and county know Chrissy has absolutely no desire to be Mr Popular, winning is the priority and he will do everything he can do to get the team there.

Wildweasel74

Do we have to approve our management through Mr Burns first lol.

I hope the grapevine is incorrect. That would be a disastrous appointment.

I'd take Philly McMahon in a heartbeat tbh

With the gap between Tally being roaded and now, looks like the CB has dropped the ball again

Why?

Tail will never wag the dog

Good knowledge of the game. Would bring in top coaches

Knows what it takes to get to and stay at the pinnacle.. Will expect no less from anyone in the squad

He's 37 and has never even coached a club team. What planet are you on?

"Tail will never wag the dog" - Based on what? What does that even mean?

By your arguments would you have Brian Fenton as manager? Or Dean Rock? Or Sean Cavanagh?

Apologies Phil, I'll run my opinions by you first in the future

No need to. I was maybe a bit sore on you there JoG2, my apologies.

Personally, I wouldn't want a manager unproven at any level as a manager. I'm not sure of any other examples of where this has worked at county level. McMahon was an exceptional player and obviously has aspirations of management, but I think he needs to learn his trade before going right in at the deep end.

I wouldn't be a fan of McKaigue being part of the management set up either. He's too close to the current crop of players and his involvement in attracting Harte/Devlin to the job shows at the very least a lack of judgement. He has more experience than McMahon to be fair to him and no doubt he's driven. But his stint with Ardboe hasn't been deadly. He was a supporting member of management in St. Pats as opposed to leading them, so we just need to apply that context imo. He doesn't have that much managerial experience either.

For me it would have made perfect sense to add Meenagh + an attacking coach to Tally's backroom team.

Assuming Meenagh is going to be the choice, I hope the CB dont stick their noses too far in and instead give him the room to choose his own team - who ever that may be. If he chooses McKaigue, fair enough. But I wouldn't want the CB imposing a backroom team on any new manager.

So you want Meenagh to have power over his own management team (which i agree with), but your first choice would have been Tally and you'd impose Meenagh on him. Put yourself in Tally's shoes, would you really want RG's former right hand man, who all the main players probably prefer, as your assistant? It would undermine your whole set up. It makes far from perfect sense to me.

To be fair - I didn't explain myself very well there and my post prob only made sense if you'd read prev posts I put up.
I'll start by saying I think Tally should have been given the chance to stay on - even though I wasn't excited by his appointment and he made some glaring mistakes, I don't think any other manager would have done any better than he did given the circumstances. And he also seemed to be trying to fix his own mistakes, and the team was improving towards the end of the season.

When the backroom team was cleared out (I don't know if that was by Tally or CB) I had hoped they would try to bring Meenagh into the backroom team. I felt this would have been something Tally himself would look to since he'd been there before, didnt seem to want the No. 1 position, doesn't live a million miles away from Tally and he did well with Derry previously. I also feel Meenagh played a huge part in the tactical approach Derry took previously, and tactically I think Tally needed help. That's the part I meant by it be making perfect sense.

To go down the road of who the players prefer, the answer there is prob still RG. But, I'd guess they'd be more than happy to have Meenagh involved in any capacity.

The crux of the point I'm trying to make is that who ever the new manager is, they should be allowed to pick their own backroom team. If it's Meenagh, and I'd be happy with that myself, I hope the CB is not trying to impose McKaigue on him.

CB need to move quickly though otherwise we're into another mess.
