Has McMahon been involved with any teams previously?

No, he has no experience of management but he played under a great manager so somebody thinks that means he'll be a great manager too. Bit like ferguson and keane.

I hope the grapevine is incorrect. That would be a disastrous appointment.

I'd take Philly McMahon in a heartbeat tbh

With the gap between Tally being roaded and now, looks like the CB has dropped the ball again

Why?

Tail will never wag the dog

Good knowledge of the game. Would bring in top coaches

Knows what it takes to get to and stay at the pinnacle.. Will expect no less from anyone in the squad

Yes, from a player's point of view which is completely different to how to manage a team to get there. He's a complete rookie so it would be a total gamble. Ferguson got United to the top, kept them there. Keane played under him for years and was a complete and utter failure in management. We should be appointing someone with management experience ideally at as hish a level as possible and preferably someone who's been successful.

Very harsh. Did really well at Sunderland.

Philly not take over Naas just last month? He hasn't felt all that knowledgeable when on co-commentary to be honest. Would rather we looked elsewhere.

Looks like it's going to be Meenagh and McKaigue according to John Fogarty from the Irish Examiner today

Derry Optimist

As Oakleak lad says Philly McMahon took over his first management job at any level when he was appointed as manager of leading Kildare club Naas on June 25th. So that should eliminate him from being considered as Derry manager. If he wants it  Ciaran Meenagh has to be the obvious choice. His selection would be popular with everyone as he is deemed a very able individual who knows Derry football through and through.

He's 37 and has never even coached a club team. What planet are you on?

"Tail will never wag the dog" - Based on what? What does that even mean?

By your arguments would you have Brian Fenton as manager? Or Dean Rock? Or Sean Cavanagh?

Totally agree Phil, he should get some experience at club level first to see if he has what it takes to manage a team of players. Derry shouldn't be used as guinea pigs for his first job because that could go wrong very quickly. I'd be very happy with Meenagh and Mckaigue if that's true.

I'm stunned McMahon is even being linked with the role. His coaching experience at club level - zero. His coaching experience at county level - zero. His knowledge of Derry football - zero. It really is that simple.

This Derry team are at a critical juncture now, clinging onto their status as one of the top 7/8 teams in the country. Getting the managerial appointment wrong again would ruin the team's chances of Division 2 promotion and an Ulster title charge. Let's hope the CB do their job and won't repeat past mistakes.

Absolutely spot on here. This is a time for safe but also very capable hands. Its doesn't get any more capable in my opinion than ciaran meenagh. He knows the county board setup, he knows the players, he has the trust of the players and county. He was excellent for us for 5 years or so. If he adds a quality backroom team ot even if he is in the coach behind a front man then so be it. There are too many top young players in derry at the minute in forbes, young, Sargent, mcdermott and the list goes on. To throw someone like philly mcmahon in would be crazy I think and thats not being disrespectful. This next appointment has to be a 3 year appointment with safe hands. If we get this right then there's no reason why we can't be competing every year.

Apologies Phil, I'll run my opinions by you first in the future

Ryan O

Philly mc Mahon to be even considered for job is based of he sounds like he knows what he's talking about when on the TV.
Meenagh would be a really good appointment still not a manager but, albeit I think more suited than Tally.

His interview after the Kerry semi final where they robbed us 3 years ago was first class, no excuses, no blame just proper clarity of what happened immediately after the game. I thats were Tally let himself down, when you have the big jobs you take responsibility in public at least.

thebuzz

Colm O'Rourke was a great player and a great pundit but it didn't really come together for him in management when you look at his time with Meath. You definitely couldn't take Philly on based on the first two attributes.
