The ceiling cap is possibly the biggest reason why it's not a great career, more of a steady safe job, but it's not the same job it was 25 years ago and a completely different job from 40 years ago.
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Are you trying to trying so say 30k isn't a good graduate salary?
With tax rates as they are? You'll not be getting rich on it put it that way.

Have some of you lost your mind ? Taxes have been the same for quite a while - EVERYONE pays them. Who said anyone would be getting rich on £30k a year ffs, are you mental ?

As a starting graduate salary it's very competitive.
Well unless you're rich enough not to pay them lol. But they're a f**king robbery in this country.

Probably not a bad salary starting out but good luck trying to do things like have a family/car/save for things like a house/holidays/wedding after all your bills.

Theres young Irish teachers in the middle east doing a couple of years and coming home with a good enough lump of savings to get them well on their way to buying/building a house, but sure here we can just let them tip away on shit money and wonder why they all emigrate.

I suppose though the other perks make up for the money and along with the likes of healthcare jobs it really needs to be a passion for it that drives you more so than money.

Nobody said it is. COMPARITIVELY SPEAKING 30k isn't bad for someone just out of uni.
Comparatively yeah of course, but then wages overall are woeful in a lot of cases considering the cost of living.

Regardless if you graduate as a teacher or in any other profession people are carrying serious amount of student debt now compared to years ago. I graduated in early 2000s and within 10 years I ticked a lot of lifes boxes so to speak in terms of got on the property ladder, got married and paid off any student debt (before I had bought my house).  I would imagine it would be a lot harder to do this today.

Is there a difference in teacher's pay north and south?

Or other occupations?

South, for groceries and fuel etc. is a lot dearer. All relative I know but wages are probably a bit better.

Can you think of any possible reason why teachers (or doctors or nurses etc) might get paid significantly better in the Gulf states than here? Or why neither the Irish nor UK government are able to pay them the same?

A lot of teachers have secondary income (E.g. through tutoring). Not many professions have the capacity to do this.

If you have Science or Maths you can make a fortune at this if you're prepared to put the effort in. The wife knows a girl who used to teach in Newry and she had multiple people per day 6 days a week for science tuition. Must have been making a killing.

Not the same need to worry about gross or net for the sideline bit I'm guessing 😜

All the trades have the capacity to wrong after normal hours by doing homers etc. The likes of accountants doing tax returns on the side. I even know a fella who works in HR has randomly landed on doing work for a few social media influencers. Lots of professions have the ability to do extra work and over time.

I tutored for years and gave it up. Complete burn out. Teaching all day and then going to do one to ones was a nightmare. I now have a Sports Massage business on the side and absolutely love it. All voluntary of course 😜

The difference is teachers have a greater capacity to maintain a secondary income with the greater holidays. Tradesmen are not comparable as they are generally self employed.

The poor teachers are burnt out by the summer and not fit for extra work!
