Quote from: Kidder81 on February 07, 2025, 06:08:31 PMIs it just teachers pay tax & NI ? As for their pension contributions, is it 5 or 6 times the contribution of the employer to the employee ?

Didnt say that !
Just noted that a top line Gross pay may well look good but it ain't in anyone's pockets...is  it ?

No but I would have thought that's fairly obvious, who talks about salaries in net figures ?

Junior doctors. They famously only get paid about 15 quid an hour. They were at pains to break down their salary to a net hourly rate when they were on strike.

Once the Income Tax, Nat Ins & Pension come out ...its not so great. I appreciate everyone pays the same but the top line isn't in anyone's pockets.

Am I reading it right?

In first year, a teacher is on £30k?

That's not great. Actually brutal.

trueblue1234

According to Glassdoor graduate salary average is £27k.

People paying for  Mortgages, food & childcare are probably counting their net income on a monthly basis...and dreaming of their gross !

Don't know what people are crying about,  everybody, if they stuck the pace at school. could been a teacher. My mum wanted me to be a teacher, I didn't, went a different way. So there no point crying what they getting paid. Look up what a Senior Architect or Structural engineer charges per hour,

I wasnt complaining about the pay but distinguishing the difference between net & gross, whilst acknowledging,  we (people) are all in the same boat with the pay packet. You say that anyone could be a teacher...I'd disagree with you !

Teachers have a decent pension too; paying for it at the end of each month.

What decade are people living in that they think 30k a year gross is anywhere near a good wage?

Quote from: trueblue1234 on February 07, 2025, 05:16:39 PMJeez it's not bad. Nearly 50k certainly not hard done by in any sense.
Tax is a bit of a moot point as everyone hit the same unless self employed.

Just took a look at the indeed salary survey for accountants and Average salary is £38,000 for an Accountant. Surely comparable.

£38k is average starting salary for an accountant...a teacher's starting salary is £30k.
No, average base salary for accountants. Not newly qualified. 3-5 years.
£30k is a hell of a starting salary.

Even NQ isn't the same as it's after several years of training and exams post degree. An NQ salary in law or accountancy in normal circumstances is for people and 26/27, not 22 straight out of college.

And can you all stop with the "after income tax..." etc. Salary discussions are always discussed on a gross basis. Vast majority of people are in the same boat.

Are you trying to trying so say 30k isn't a good graduate salary?

Gross pay doesn't land in your bank account on pay day ...so it's very relevant to most young people!

I think it needs to be compared to other occupations.

Say for example, on average, a teacher, an engineer, a plumber and a brickie.

What would each of these be on at, say 24?
