Quote from: Rossfan on January 09, 2025, 08:12:45 PMDo you have to pay to go to those "grammar schools"?

No, there were some prep schools that allowed you to go to at primary level which gave you entry to that grammar that it was associated too
The big prep schools aren't free. Inchmarlo, Campbell, Victoria College etc. are all about 5 grand a year.

I meant not paying private to all grammars only those that had prep.

Though as said above Campbell do charge

Anybody of half decent ability in Newtownabbey would go to Hazelwood College.

Possibly, I never looked at it at the time, I was hoping my daughters would end up at the local grammar.

Hazelwood quite a good school but the integrated bit confused me,when past pupils like Andre Shoukri still ended up so sectarianised.

Quote from: Wildweasel74 on January 09, 2025, 06:33:51 PMThe problem with CCMS, and I had dealings with them, they shortsighted. They rather see a school close than become integrated, that doesnt make sense. Worse run is DE, I can't get over how badly it's run, and I not get started about my own outfit EA.

The worst decision the DE made was rationalising the five education & library boards into the EA. It is a complete shitshow ! It is similar to the supercouncils costing just as much as old system!
Rationalisation in the public sector rarely means a reduction in overheads and/or an increase in productivity. I have a brother in law who works in the EA and he wonders how many of them put the day in.

Missus is a teacher, and I cannot wrap my head around how inept the general working practices in the education system are.

For instance, why is every teacher around the country having to spend time creating their own resources?

Surely its not beyond the wit of even civil servants to have one highly skilled group in the EA create top-class resources for all... and both ensure quality and reduce overall time spent across every school doing resource creation.

After all, its meant to be the one curriculum.

Although perhaps the difficulty is finding highly skilled people within the EA....

Some people are just bad and he would fit into that category. I would almost have him down as more a gangster than sectarian. I doubt it would have mattered if he'd went to a catholic school never mind an integrated one.

I was once told by a Regent House illumni that Campbell college would enroll a donkey if they paid the fees..

There is definitely a load of snobbery within the PUL community in terms of the Grammar/secondary split and you really couldn't see the likes of a St Pats, Maghera, St Ronans in Lurgan or the new Lecale Trinity in Downpatrick getting off the ground in the likes of Newtownards for example.

I always felt there was a certain type of snobbery around places like the 'Convent' in Magherafelt and the 'College' in Newry.  They just quietly thought they were a wee bit better.

Don't get me wrong I know plenty of parents of kids and past pupils from the Red High kicking up a stink about their kids having to mix with the dregs of the Flying Horse etc that would attend DelaSalle in the town, standards would drop but it still went ahead anyway.

There's no way in gods green earth the DUP or UUP would allow the same in Newtownards for instance.

Campbell has never had a great reputation academically, at least not in my lifetime. A lot of the primarily Protestant grammars trade on their name and historical reputation that their academic performance doesn't come close to matching. Whether they ever were, or simply they were the schools of the elite, I've no idea. Methody, RBAI etc have fallen way behind.

Academically they were, but still had quite a few pupils getting free dinners. Their alumni became middle class but in the past not the families they came had modest backgrounds.

Hell I went to the convent, and I felt that about some pupils round me,

While running around Cookstown in the 90s if you ended up courting a girl from the Convent this definitely carried a out certain amount of kudos.  They always seemed to be at a higher level than girls from other schools.

Kids get to grammar schools as they're bright and gifted.

I always thought being a grammar school teacher would be easy as the kids are bright and for the most part, well mannered etc.

They kids are going to get A and B's etc. regardless of who their teachers are.

I think a pupil getting an A say, is a great result for the teacher in a 'normal' school. Exceptions to this always but that's my take on it.

There are plenty of dunces/ bastards in grammar schools.
