The Catholic church will also hold onto their lofty CCMS position as well, so there's that as well.

CCMS was formed in 1989 in response to the pitiful state of the maintained sector in terms outcomes for young people and school buildings. The Maintained sector is now the highest achieving sector by outcomes. So much so, that Mr.Girvan wants a replica body established for the controlled sector to raise standards and outcomes.

He will have his work cut out.

Worked a 20 years ago with those would describe themselves as middle class unionists.  The thought of their children going to the local high school in the likes of Ballyclare / Bangor / Newtownabbey / Newtownards / Carrickfergus was just unthinkable, it was simply not an option.  I'm sure things have not changed.

Yes there might be a bit of snobbery in the nationalist side but gulf in academic standards between grammar and high school on all fronts is nowhere near as much.

The problem with CCMS, and I had dealings with them, they shortsighted. They rather see a school close than become integrated, that doesnt make sense. Worse run is DE, I can't get over how badly it's run, and I not get started about my own outfit EA.

It takes CCMS, DE and EA to run schools in NI?  We really are a bureaucrat/bluffers paradise.  And that's just for the catholic side!

On average there is a 20% difference in attaining 5 GCSE grades A- C including Maths & English between Grammar (90%+) & Secondary Schools(70%+)

The local high school in Ballyclare is decent for secondary school level.. but Newtownabbey secondary schools wouldn't be great, though some are having lower and upper 6 year classes.

Carrickfergus is awful, I would have taught a load when I was in the local tech, not sure on Ards/Bangor but think they are some better ones.

If you can't pay for them to go grammar you're stuck! It's a right few quid to force your child to go to a school that academic wise,  is above their station!

The worst decision the DE made was rationalising the five education & library boards into the EA. It is a complete shitshow ! It is similar to the supercouncils costing just as much as old system!

Do you have to pay to go to those "grammar schools"?

Rationalisation in the public sector rarely means a reduction in overheads and/or an increase in productivity. I have a brother in law who works in the EA and he wonders how many of them put the day in.

No, there were some prep schools that allowed you to go to at primary level which gave you entry to that grammar that it was associated too

The big prep schools aren't free. Inchmarlo, Campbell, Victoria College etc. are all about 5 grand a year.

As far as I am aware, no Catholic grammar school has fees in general, other the the usual "contributions" from time to time. Many of the Protestant grammar schools are fee paying. As noted above the Catholic ones are less socially exclusive, although they do have academic selection.
