In case chelsea get knocked out...
Psg v chelsea is a reminder of why brazil were so poor at the world cup. Luiz, oscar, silva, maxwell, willian all doing mercenary duty in Europe a long way from the joga bonito.
Is it just me or is Luiz far too slow on the ball, allowing Chelsea time to get organised?

Or you could argue it shows the strength of Brazilian football when you consider that in such a big game there were 8 different Brazilians on the pitch during the game.
Hard to see past Madrid again IMO, I really think they could do the almost impossible task of retaining European crown. Albeit their league form isn't great at the moment.
Any dark horses fancied? Could Borussia make it all the way against all odds with a disastrous season so far? Their champions league performances would give the opinion that it's almost a different team that plays week in - week out in the Bundesliga.

I think Barca or Bayern. Barca's form has been absolutely frightening since the loss to Sociedad and Madrid won't be back up to scratch until either or both of Rodriguez and Modric are back.
The Clasico on March 22nd should be incredible.

Yeah it's a toss up between the big 3 I reckon although Chelsea could sneak in there with a dour performance against Barca and Real scoring a fluky counter attack goal at Stamford Bridge as they like to do! I wouldn't fancy them to beat Bayern.

Totally agree,Neymar and Messi combining really well and Suarez improving with each game,Busquets and Rakitic the most physically imposing partnership they've had in the centre in a long time too, i was thinking i'd be cute and back them at a tidy 8/1 or so a few weeks back but only 11/2 not as exciting :(
Real might ship 6 goals in the semis to comply with recent tradition.

When do they start playing football?
Why did they take veratti off? Unless worried about a red?lovely little player. Cavanis looking like the Napoli cavani
I think he must as he would have gone nuts with thed ref if he hadn't. He shrugged his shoulders as if it had happened.
I actually like Costa. He's a thug, but you'd love him on your team.

And a very overrated manager.
Not sure how u say hes a over rated manager, he the only one to win 4 leagues in different countries. I do think though he actually holding this Chelsea team back, they showed very early in the season they can be a attacking force but his strict style is holding back his players. As for the tackle watched it a few times there, dangerous enough looking tackle, though the players running after the ref is pathetic, but seen the same diving and waving imaginary cards in the Arsenal , Man Utd game the other night.
Just saw Silvas header again. Courtois was bad positioned I thought?

Got caught in two minds. Was making his way out about to go punch the corner away or catch it and decided to back-peddle when he saw how far out it was going. Caught in no-man's land, but the header was just under the bar so even if he was on the line it wouldn't have been an easy save.

On strikers Hunterlaar looked good the other night, but in saying that the Madrid defence was pish.

I wouldnt have said that at all,he got the timing a bit wrong , realised it and pulled out, it was actually Oscar who followed through with his tackle.
A booking for Ibra at the very most.
it was undoubtably the reaction of the chelsea players that got him the red.
Terry was heavily involved in that and i would say got another 1 or 2 PSG players in the book as well by pressuring the referee.

The higher the cost of the rights, the more the marketing. Marketing doesn't win matches however.
I though PSG had way more energy. They owned the midfield and even when Chewsea went ahead they didn't lose the head. Luiz's goal was class and though they were at a disadvantage going into ET they had more balls than the opposition.
Parking the bus is more difficult against a team like PSG. Ibrahimovic was a bit unlucky to be sent off aswell.
PSG aren't exactly paupers either lads. This wasn't Chelsea v Bradford.

Wrote this on 6th November on Man City thread and got devoured by some.............I still think I am right though!
The premiership is the most over-rated sports competition in the world!!!! Overseas players come in to line their pockets and the public in Britain are being completely mugged. We think that some of our players go to the USA to get a pay off.......well the whole world is going to the premiership to get a pay off.......the players dont give a s**t and when they come agaist teams from other parts of Europe whose players do actually care they are completely shown up for what they are.....lazy and spoilt.
Very poor last night from Chelsea. Very strange that they had Oscar and Fabregas in MF when they knew that PSG were going to be aggressive and in their face.
Jose should have set up like he does for away matches with a bit more beef in midfield like Willian rather than having Oscar and Fabregas on who were not able to handle the physical stuff. By the time he brought Willian on for the second half the tempo was already set and Chelsea couldn't turn the tide.
I'm happy enough though after all their shenanigans and I must say I like the look of Veratti he was absolutely superb last night constantly trying to get past his man and push PSG on at every opportunity especially when they had 10 men.

They seem to have come on a good bit from last year, AZ.
A bit like a Man City replica but they gel better as a team in this competition this year.
Ah yeah, they were impressive last night, and dug in well. But I suppose I'm saying we shouldn't be pitching it as some sort of minnow taking out a poor Chelsea side. This is an expensive, experienced squad with money behind them.
Excellent game to watch. Thought the standard of football was very high. Not a bad footballer in sight. Both teams wanted to win it badly.
Group stages a right bore now in the CL.

It's definitely not a minnow.
I was looking at the stats for the French league. PSG had a budget of 500m . Next nearest were Lyon and Monaco on 100-150 m and some of the Burnley equivalents were on 24m. CL is mostly about money now. Across Europe domestic football in a big country supports one or two giants and the others have not much hope, really . Atletico and Dortmund would be the exceptions in recent years.
Germany seems to be a well run league. They have good teams, generally, with great crowds at a reasonable ticket price. They don't seem to go bananas with their transfers, but teams like Dortmund, Schalke, Munich etc perform respectably in Europe.
Veratti was absolutely outstanding last night. Didn't think he was that good but he embarrassed Chelsea's midfield at times.

Wolfsburg might be the next Dortmund. Flying at the minute.
Chelsea's midfield was anonymous last night. It was very strange. They actually looked not 'up for it'. How many clearances or kickouts were won uncontested in midfield by a PSG player? It was constant.

Maybe the expectation that a scoreless draw would suffice was playing on the Chelsea players minds whereas the PSG lads they needed to score irrespective of Chelsea scoring or not and mentally were better prepared for the game.

Agreed, Mourinho is a genius but a **** nonetheless. His CL wins with Inter and Porto were fantastic achievements. Regardless of how much Moratti bankrolled Inter, they failed in Europe year after year under Mancini. Their wins at Stamford Bridge and at home to Barca were exceptional. He let himself down at Madrid though, with the whole team turning into a very bay nasty image of him.

With Porto he got poxed lucky against a poor Manchester United team with a wrongly disallowed goal and a dreadful goalkeeping mistake. Then beat the weakest opposition that any Champions League winner has had to beat.

With Inter he got lucky with the ash cloud and a wrongly disallowed goal against Barcelona.

That Monaco team came from behind to put Madrid out and then dumped out Ranieri's Chelsea in '04. More than deserving finalists. Porto still won the bloody thing, a mere year after being Uefa cup winners.
I agree about the ash cloud etc and Bojan's disallowed goal in 2010 but that's hardly Mou's fault. Barca got lucky the year before with the Chelsea match and some think the year after when Pepe got sent off. Every team needs a bit of luck to win all sorts of competitions
Barca and Messi in particular seem to have refound their mojo after a lacklustre (by their standards) 18 months or so.
Spellbinding stuff..

So. Many. Nutmegs.
Messi is absolutely flying at the minute. 10 assists to go with 20 goals this year. What's most impressive though is the sight of him haring back to the edge of his own box to make tackles. Has been doing it in the league too and that hasn't been seen for a few years.
Yaya Toure looks like Steven Gerrard in that defensive role. They are just strolling past him. This is a turkey shoot.
Milner looks like a cart horse. Who is this Sanchez playing for Barce' that wee George speaks of?
If you were being picky you could say that they look susceptible to conceding a goal or two but the range of their attacking is incredible..
Shit just got real.
Or maybe not.
Should have been 10 only for Joe Hart. As good a goalkeeping performance as I've seen since Ludak Miklosko on the last day of the season in 1995 to win us the league!!

Ok, I'm not watching the game but I read this thread before going to check the score. Was expecting 5-0. Disappointed.
But for a mixture of poor finishing from Neymar and Suarez, Barca could/should realistically have had about 7. Played most of the second half in third gear in fairness.
Toure getting applauded off. Some footballer but a embarrassment tonight. The very least you expect from a professional is effort which he did not give. He wasn't alone either. They'll tank some team at the weekend and all will be forgotten. Joke

Agree absolutely on this.
Disagree. The home side is already at an advantage of having an extra 30 minutes played on their ground. That is offset by the away goals rule.

A medal :D
I agree with what Wenger says to be honest. Use it as a deciding factor after extra time but if teams are level after two games play extra time. Lots of teams are very cagey at home now, the opposite of the problem the initial rule tried to tackle.
To be fair the 8 teams left bar Monaco, possibly Porto, are what I would perceive to be the best teams in Europe.
Chelsea would merit a place in there.
Still fancy Bayern to win it, they won't be phased by the Spanish charge this year.
Wenger is right regarding the away goals rule, stupid that such a rule exists to decide a game that finishes level.

I think it's too big an offset - to be fair(er) it should go straight to penalties after 90 mins if it's all square, IMO.
Champions League quarter-final draw:
PSG vs. Barcelona
Atlético Madrid vs. Real Madrid
FC Porto vs. Bayern Munich
Juventus vs. AS Monaco
Wenger wouldn't be complaining if Arsenal went through on the away goal rule. A poor excuse for getting knocked out of Europe by average French side.

Ball was going away from the goal when the player was fouled--had he made it to the ball maybe the angle would not have been a clear goal scoring opportunity? Not saying that's the reason, but it's all I can think of.
How he stayed on in the world cup final, I have no idea.

Not sure if it was believing that he's only got a left foot or was so utterly terrified of letting him use it that he sold himself completely to prevent him getting inside. It was an absolutely beautiful feint and then the finish was ridiculous.

Get in there you beauty. Thanks very much to Michael McWilliams in the Irish News who tipped Juventus at the last 16 stage at 28/1. Tenner on them each way. Deserved winners over the 2 legs. Had some great chances on the break tonight.
I was thinking earlier in the season there'd be plenty of bodies leaving Madrid in the summer. There'll be even more now :o .
As for tonights game Bale will be crucified surely but he a t least showed some glimpses and there were plenty just as bad Ronaldo and James to name 2 and Kroos was poor again and has had a poor few months too. Will Klopp head there in the Summer or who will they look for?
A great chance for Barca to join an elite club of the real giants of European football on 5 European Cups.
Delighted for Juve though, would be great to see Buffon and Pirlo win.

A real changing of the guard tonight; the old players are practically gone, shown up to be hollow and empty of substance, while it's the new, gunslingers time now. Richie Sadlier ran rings around Brady and Dunphy, able to debate factually and correctly against punters peddling old, tired, inaccurate points to suit their own views.

Well it usually is when you're 33 and were considered a liability by your own and opposition fans in your final 18 months it goes to show what the forums know. I wonder will his buddy shake his hand this time :D.
One of them is still a current United player and two more are on their way back, you heard it here first ;)
Delighted for Juve and delighted for Buffon - what a legend he is. Thought Juve were going to go out on the basis of a penalty I thought was a home town decision, but to be fair I thought Madrid might have had a penalty in the second half when Evra took down Hernandez. Once Juve scored though, Madrid never looked likely. :)

Have to say the post match discussion on the RTE panel was very good last night. New format working well.
Bale got a doing and imo he was far from the poorest RM player last night. Far from it but the mob has spoken. Fair play to him in speaking to RTE as well after the game.
Have to say I was impressed by the RM crowd in giving the Juve players sporting rounds of applause when being substituted.
Nobody watchin this?
Not a big soccer man meself but I know its on and have an interest in the final at least
Soccer men on this board on interested in British soccer?

So Suarez sneaks in for the winner as Evra is left trailing behind trying to catch him.

Enjoyable game. Thought Pogba had a decent shout for a penno at 1-1, which could have made things interesting. But Barcelona worth their win overall.
Barca worthy winners but Juve gave a good account of themselves.

Buffon could have done better on the second goal he put it on plate for Suarez. Was only going to be one winner after that goal. Good game on the night the better side won.
Very good final and some great players -as good as I ve seen anyway - there tonight. Buffon, Pirlo, Iniesta, Messi and Suarez will be revered forever.

Barca are a joy to watch. Don't get the Mascherano love in,think he's a weak link and Alba could do with bucking up his ideas too, other than that theyre a serious side. Should've backed the bolox off them all them months ago.

Disagree about Mascherano. He made a huge tackle in the last minute and won the ball clean. Vidal on the other hand was flying in all over the shop at times but is going to be a serious enforcer. Mascherano is the reason Barcelona can play the 3 lads up front - or one of the reasons anyway. He was grand. What do you expect from him out of interest?
Poor Champions League overall, with no English side of any quality and sub standard Real Madrid and Bayern Munich sides. The fact that an ageing Juventus side got to the Final and remained in contention to the last kick of the game says it all.
Expect rejuvenated Real Madrid and Chelsea to be stronger next year but not easy on the eye.

Very enjoyable game and well done to both sides.
The match v England btw has to have been the worst game I have seen . Awful awful. Rooney's "touch" for the goal chance would have been embarassing in an astro kickabout.
