Hurling Discussion / Fiacla
June 09, 2010, 01:42:53 PM
I was just reading there about Pat Fox and the Galway hurlers of the 1980s and it got me thinking about teeth. Do hurlers today have more fiacla than  their 1980s predecessors? Some of the hurlers back then were very mantach.  I seem to remember Conor Hayes with a shocking set of teeth.

I would love to see Sligo winning Connacht.

Galway footballers have the advantage of a history of lording it over Sligo and 9 all-Irelands so a lot depends on how well Sligo are mentally. None of the baggage may matter but don't forget the punishment Meath got back in 2001. If Galway are in the mood it should be a good match.

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group.[1]

Very interesting article on the politics of genocide.

Nice one Louth Exile.

Hard to see any sport but the Gaa giving days like that to a family.

I go to under 8 soccer matches with the young fella in Zurich. Last week they had a match against a team from the famous Grasshopper Zurich who are one of the 2 big soccer teams in the city. I was talking to one of the parents and he said that when the under 8s make it to senior at most one of them will be involved with the professional setup, if at all. There are kids today in places like Ghana and Montenegro who will eventually play for Grasshopper. Very hard to get 4 generations of family pulling for that sort of team. Most of the kids here support Barcelona anyway.   You can't beat the GAA for local roots.  Even if it is torture at times.

Sligonian- that is very defensive talk. If you want to win the all-Ireland you need to be more positive.

Fair dues Sligonian, it's a pity my dad has given up on the Mayo cause, or is it... because I wonder if we'll ever go near winning anything again.
Well to be honest, ya can never turn your back on your county. It's not possible, view among some people in Mayo at the minute is "ahhra sure i wouldn't go across the street to see them play". Bullshit. Can't be done, for me at least. If Mayo were loose every game for the next 20 years....I'll still hang on every result and report.
Fair Dues to Sligonian, been through some dark days and it's great to be rewarded with great ones like last Saturday. No doubt there are countless other lads in other counties in the same situation, look at Louth sure, I'd say they have been waiting for a day like last Saturday longer that Sligo(2007).

There are times to trumpet your loyalty from the tree-tops and there are times not to. This is one of the latter.

None of it matters as when there is a match coming up the green and red mist will descend again. However in the absence of even a definite fixture to post suggested teams for, we should be allowed give out about losing a Connacht qf for a while.

What happens to all of that furious match and team analysis capacity when the fixtures are in limbo?

Patience Seafoid, patience. We'll be back on board the Messiah wagon soon enough.

MWWSI is still forecast for 2010 presumably or

Fair play to you Sligonian. The 2 of ye must have enjoyed yesterday. It's true there is nothing like a win shared with the ould lad. Or that feeling when a goal goes in and you look at him and he's thinking the same thing as you.

To really debase it you'd need the Pixies

Can any of you beat this contribution by Sligonian who goes far beyond the call of duty in following his county? Do any of you share this intensity of commitment with other family members?

It took me a while to get to sleep last night, replaying the game in my head as I lay on the pillow. One thing I had nearly forgotten yday, was i missed all last yr due to being away, which broke my continous championship match record of being at everyone since 1989, well 2008 was my last championship and id forgotten how nervous I get before the games, alot of toilet visits. Well when the game started my nerves went thankfully, I didnt really worry at all at our start although my Dad was going ballistic with ref even at that stage, and parents of young children gave out to him for his cursing

Anyway for what it's worth from a Tyrone Gael that Galway team was my favourite team ever in any code (aprt from my own county of course). Fantastic... Keady, McInerney, Finnerty, Naughton, Cooney, Sylvie, Lynskey... loved them

Any one of the forwards could score 4 points or more on the day. It was a class team.

Kevin Walsh must be a good manager. He can take over from big Joe whenever the need arises ;). Nice to see Sligo beating Mayo. They might even beat Galway which wouldn't be a bad thing either. Imagine beating the big three to win Connacht. That would be some achievement.

Mayo fans shouldn't be too down. Galway lost to Ros in the first round in 2001 and ended  up beating them in the qfs and then going on to win the all-Ireland. It is still all to play for, surely.
