Mayo / Re: Mayo Club Football.
April 19, 2010, 10:45:58 AM
it was a fairly physical game between Knockmore and Crossmolina. It was nice to win it in the end.
Brian Benson looked sharp eventhough he hit the post a couple of times from scorable opportunities. Ian Rowland also looks a decent prospect and is capable of taking a long range score. We'll need that if Ciaran Mac is not going to be returning to the panel this year. Good to see James Cafferty coming on in the second half, hopefully he can have an injury free summer.
Also, great to see Peadar back getting a run for the last ten minutes. He looked sharp and stood out when he came on with his support running. He has serious pace for an auld fella. He's still probably a fair bit off being ready for county at this stage.

I think we have the makings of a good young team and we'll go along way this year.

How bad are the injuries to McGarrity and Gardiner?? Heard they are hamstring and Gardiners looked like a broken arm??Any truth in that?
Peadar G has a broken arm as well as nerve damage causing a lack of feeling in the fingers. He had an operation and got a pin inserted in the arm and a cast from wrist to shoulder. The break is very close to the elbow. Could be out for 2 or 3 months with no real prognosis on recovery time.
He also had to get a stitch in the mouth after the tyrone game after taking a blow during the incident where Joe Mcmahon got sent off. While it looked like he took a dive on the TV, he genuinely got a clip.
Not a good couple of weeks for him.

. It was suggested to me earlier that K Higgins would be a better option at 6. I must say it had nt occured to me but mo dhuine
pointed out he is a better stopper/tackler than Howley while both are short on size anyway. Howley is a hit or miss stopper with a reliance on the shoulder.

I would also like to see Higgins get a shot at centre back. He is a class act but his form at corner back is starting to get a bit worrying. In fairness, with his height it is hard for him to compete aginst the bigger forwards in the air , like meath last year and even meehan on sunday. But he also has a tendency to stand well off his man, it's like he has too much confidence in his own pace. This isn't going to work against the very top corner forwards.
Having said that, there is no way he could be dropped as he has so much to offer. He seems to read it well and would have the pace for the running centre forwards like o'sullivan or Pierce O'Neill.

Howley is our centre back but he doesnt seem to be dominating his area. If we are going for the hard hitting type of centre back he has to dominate. For Crossmolina, we had Damian Mulligan doing it for years. He was the man and he knew it, anyone that came down his channel got hit and they new they were going to get hit. At a higher level, the same could be said about McGeeney for Armagh. I'm not sure if Howley has the presence and the leadership for that type of game. not yet anyway.

Seamus O Se, Varley and Mcloughlin were all great additions the last day. Mcloughlin is a lovely footballer and you could put him nearly anywhere. How was he not on the team last year?

I was delighted Seamus O se did well. He has a massive physical presence around the middle and he pretty much cleaned Gary O'Donnell out of it. Aidan O Se struggled against Hanley. In one way, thats probably a good thing as we performed well without over-relying on him

Good debut for Varley as well. The forwards have plenty of competition for places with Dillon, mort, harte,B Moran and Kilcoyne all yet to come back. How many of those 5 will make the championship 15?

Has Heaney retired at all?? It looks from this piece as though he has transferred to Claregalway and won't be playing this year but hasn't quite hung up the towel yet....

http://www.mayonews.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8768:nallen-retires-as-heaney-transfers&catid=14&Itemid=100008

Yeah, both have retired from the intercounty scene. They were on the off the ball show on newstalk on wednesday Feb 3 discussing thier careers with Mayo. Dave Heaney said that he felt he didnt have the extra gear he needed in the games against Tyrone and Meath over the last couple of years. He also said that he felt that he would only be keeping a young fella off the team.

Jimmy said that the reward was in the playing ( he didnt get much game time in 2009) and that he knew when he left the bench in croker after the meath game it would be his last time there as a player.

Both came across very well

Seems that you can't. Go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular data. Delete the cellular data address, password an username, this should disable the internet.

thanks for that. It would work alright but you have the hassle of re-entering the username and password  every time you do want to use data. Might try just changing one digit in the username and see how that goes. I n the meantime , I have toldf him to turn off push and also turn off 3g. I think edge function will still give you data capability even if you have 3G turned off so not sure if that will work.

On my O2 one when I go North there is the following option:

Settings>General>Network>Data Roaming

All I have to do is switch Data roaming off. When I want it on for a moment (which is a rarity considering the cost) I just switch it back on.

thanks but i'm more interested in having a better control of when I use data  rather than not using data while roaming. cheers anyway

Im going to say it here, Galway at 14-1 are a good each-way bet for the All Ireland. Im not saying they will lift Sam this year but you will get 7-1 if they get to the final on an each-way bet. Its very possible they will get to a semi where anything can happen. I wouldnt like to come up against them in the latter stages of the championship.

Back them to win! If they get to a final they will be full of confidence, and a confident galway team with Joe Kernan calling the shots would be capable of anything!

I think it will be tight on sunday, Galway by 3. With Nallen and Heaney now retired, am I rightin thinking we have only one 30 year old in the squad?

Well done to both Jimmy and David Heaney on outstanding careers with Mayo. They will be missed. Both sound, down to earth sort of fella's which is always great for a squad.

Jimmy leaving our own club will be a massive loss. It really is the end of an era.

Claregalway will now have Paul Mcguinness, Jimmy and Heaney togging for them next season. Great men to have involved in any club and could imagine them doing well this year

Has anyone got any ideas on how to avoid data charges on the prepay (ready to go) I phone.

This is the situation of a friend of mine : He is in the republic on a ready to go (ie prepay SIM) option. He generally uses the apps such as webtext, social networking, mail, safari browser etc when he is in a wireless location such as his house and place of work (the majority of the time really)

However, when he is not in a wireless location he likes to have the option to use data. This costs 99c a day on a prepay SIM with vodafone. This 99c a day gets expensive if you are using it every day.

He still wants to keep the option of using data, but wants to avoid using it unintentionally. For example, lets say he wants to check an email for information but does not want to download any new mail and incur the data charge. How can he do this? Is there away to block data download for all apps by changing a setting? This would be the ideal scenario as he could just change the setting back anytime he wants to use the data option

Any help would be appreciated before I start googling the various voda and apple forums!
Thanks,Venter

I'll ring westport in the morning before I go anywhere, with a bit of luck it will be open! I havent played mulranny in a long time, I remember it being very windy back there and there being horses and sheep roaming the course. They have little fences around the greens to keep the livestock out. ( Is it a public course?)

I also remember scoring a wind assisted hat-trick for Kilmurry FC against mulranney once upon a time. I missed a penalty and I also fell into a hole and tore ligaments in my ankle. I have mixed emotions about that day.
Of course this is all relevant because the pitch was near the golf course!

I was at the game on saturday and I have to say United look very average.. Rooney is a brilliant instinct player but if he's given loads of time, he seems to make some poor decisions. Having said that, he was pretty much a one man show the last night. he got little or no support from  anderson, park, carrick, giggs and valencia. Owen was completely useless. How can you get rid of tevez and Ronaldo and replace them with Owen and expect to win anything of note. Owen will not cut it against top class defenders.

facebook

fantasy football 09
Football Live (for NFL)

oh and i've bookmarked iphone.livescore as an app too which is handy for football scores

Damn, I was going to make my millions from developing a fantasy football app. The market for that is huge. I've been usurped. The delay in the transition of my idea from the barstool to reality was my downfall.

I always understood a public course to be owned by a council.

Not to many in the west so, although I saw in the western a few months ago that a community group opened a par 3 back doohoma direction. I wonder how that is going for them?

I'm playing westport this weekend. I heard its a difficult course. Anyone played it?

heard this on the way home on radio ulster.  coming from working in retail it's a disgrace the amount of food that goes in the bin because it is past its display date but still within it best before date.

I was in dunnes earlier and I got some nice baby potatoes in basil and sundried tomato butter. They  were only 29c and probably a few hours from going in the bin. They are usually sold at 2.99 or something like that. The odd visit to the "reduced to clear" section can be worth it.

The spuds were grand by the way!!
