Probably 2040 at the earliest?.

Agreed, the reality is that the Brits are keen to get rid of NI and the Free state is keen to take it. So really the Taioseach and the British PM have f**k all to do with stopping or encouraging a UI.

It really all boils down to the North's sectarian headcount.

Does having a preference on the constitutional question make one sectarian?

Of course we'd like a UI .....but not yet or for many a day.

Oooops...the mask has slipped. Lol.

What poll is MM working off? Your own personal opinion?

'The Republican Party'? Eh?

A Taioseach at least outlining the benefits of a UI to people north and south would obviously help but Meehole has no interest in that...

As a 'republican party', MM has had years to start campaigning for a re-united Ireland.

He's not going to do it now.

Substandard

He'll probably do like Varadkar and say after that it was all he wanted all along, to save face.

Listening to, talking to people I meet every day, or have a pinteen with etc.
Some say want nothing to do with the kip
Others we can't afford it
Most in favour ..... but not right now thanks.

Meanwhile, back in the world beyond your circle of associates, according to the latest ARINS polls, 76% of people in the republic support a border poll in about next decade.

So its almost as though Martin isn't representing the wishes of the people as your friends led you to believe. He is doing the direct opposite in fact.

Its possible your belief that your friends are a representative sample of the general population in the south was wildly off the mark.

Disposable income is more than 18 per cent higher in the Republic and hourly earnings are more than a third above those in Northern Ireland. While people in the south save €1 out of every €8 of their cash after essentials, Northern Ireland has the lowest disposable income in the UK.

Stand out details from this weeks Life & Times survey:

  • The research shows the margin between those who would vote for a united Ireland and those advocating the constitutional status quo halved in the space of 12 months.
  • The June study showed that support for Irish unity has increased by more than one-third since 2017, while the number favouring the union has fallen by 13 percentage points during the same period.
  • There is now just a six percentage points separating those who'd vote 'Yes' (36%) to unity if a border poll were held tomorrow and those who'd vote 'No' (42%).
  • A year before there was a 12 percentage point difference between the two groups.
  • Just six years previously the margin stood at 33 points.
  • This is the first time a poll has shown the gap to be in single digits

It's encouraging but there is a long way to go to 66% approval.

Not sure what your age is, but do you see a UI in your life time?

I'm 53, I really can't see it in my life time.

Lots of factors in favour but when it actually boils down to it, some on 'our' side will put something else down on their ballot box!

And it won't be due to Irish unity
