where does the term hun originate from? I had heard it was an insult to the royal family being german but that could be balls.

I believe both Celtic and Rangers called each other huns at various times after the war with "go home ya huns" being a general term of abuse at football grounds.

I think the term stuck with Rangers after their fans were described as being "like rampaging huns" in some English newspapers after they played some pre-season friendlies down there and their fans went on drunken rampages. Either that or it was the Spanish press who christened them after the Cup Winners Cup final in 1972 when there was more drunken rampaging done. I'm not sure there's a definitive answer but the term "hun" stuck with Rangers after that to such an extent that fans of nearly every club in Scotland refer to them as huns.

That is one version I read anyway.

Donalmac, you're first sentence proves where you work. Don't worry I will not be returning to that establishment any time soon.

By the way would you care to point out my hate filled rants and sectarianism? There's plenty of that on OWC to which you proudly belong.

Can anyone answer me why Irish people get so f**king worked up about Celtic and Rangers. Throwing around insults at each other like 10 year olds. The same boys go to GAA matches and wouldn't shout the half of it at their most hated rivals. Is it just soccer that inspires this stupidity. Back in the day when I was in SF we used to try and recruit members at Celtic supporters clubs. We sctually stopped this as a rule cos all we got were absolute brainless morons that thought republicanism was something to do with wiping out protestants.
Also, on this site, if someone also posts on the OWC site (until last week I didn't even know what OWC was) it puts  a black mark against them for some. Sorry lads, they have as much right to state their opinions here as anyone has. To be honest I don't see any of them doing much winding up - just asking relevant questions. There is too much brainless tribalism in the world and it seems Celtic and Rangers are now the vehicle to carry this crap.
As for the initial topic of the thread - yes disgusting song sang by retards but what can you do. The world is full of these boys. Rise above it and ignore them and stop wastiing time reporting it to embassys. Blow kisses at them I say!

Well I can tell you why I get worked up about Celtic. The club was formed by an Irish Christian Brother for the purpose of helping Irish immigrants who were oppressed (do these things not strike a chord with SF members) and from humble beginnings and against every obstacle placed before them in Scotland the club has survived to become one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

This song reflects not only petty mindedness but ethnic hatred and jealousy of the club, the origins of its followers, and its achievements. Anyone will tell you that in Scotland in 1967 the general viw was that while welcoming one its clubs winning the European Cup the perception of the establishment was that it was the wrong club.

Edelmiro Juan Farrell (1887-1980), grandson of a Co. Longford man, became president of Argentina in 1944.  He was probably a descendant of a Longfordman who left Ireland during the famine or its aftermath (indeed I know there is a vibrant Longford-decendants' community in Argentina today).  I think Messi is a decent footballer, and I cheered Maradona's 'hand of God', but I wouldn't consider myself an Argentina fan, I wouldn't be slabbering on about their nasty neighbours in Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay and I definitely wouldn't be finding every opportunity to call them names.  Am I immature?

The issue is not about soccer crowd insults, the issue is the public singing of a racially offensive song by a soccer club supporters
I would care if a soccer crowd were still allowed to throw bananas at black players.

Why would you be anything other than honest?
Trolling is not the same as asking relevant questions.
Repetitive shít stirred about the GAA, not for the purpose of discussing but for the purpose of trolling.
Nonsense trolling on the Celtic thread, just a couple of examples.

That's your worthless opinion. It is not mine.
What can be done is to have the song banned.
Do you have a problem with the song being banned?
Until the publicity, the banning was not considered.
You can rise above whatever nonsense on a personal level, in Society this level of racial ignorance  has to be dealt with.

QuotePadraic Colum was born in County Longford and as a youth met many who had lived through the Great Famine, which ravaged Ireland in the mid-19th century. His father was master of the workhouse (home for the destitute), and thus Padraic saw much of the poverty and land hunger of the people. His uncle was a poultry dealer, and the young Colum traveled with him to fairs and markets. There he met the wandering people of the roads, ballad singers, and storytellers and found inspiration for some of the poems which have become part of Ireland's literary heritage. "She Moves through the Fair" and "The Old Woman of the Roads" are among his numerous simple lyrics which have often been anthologized.

Colum became deeply interested in poetry and theater, and he brought to the great Irish Literary Revival a young man's vision together with an inheritance from the ancient voice of the people. He was one of the founders of the Irish Review, and his early poems were published by Arthur Griffith, of whom he later wrote a biography (Ourselves Alone, 1959). Among his volumes of poetry were The Road Round Ireland (1926) and Images of Departure (1969). His collected poems were published in 1953.

Colum was a founder-member of the Irish National Theatre Society (forerunner of the Abbey Theatre)

Should I be constantly dissing the Gate Theatre?

I don't doubt the decent roots of Celtic Football club. I just don't think it is a good enough reason to be getting riled over what is a game, played in a foreign country, played by guys getting obscene amounts of money, many of whom don't even know  the basics about the club as you have told it. Believe me I like to see Celtic do well due to their background (which distinguishes them slightly from other clubs that I might follow) but I have also met some Celtic fans from Glasgow and I never met lads with so much to say about Ireland that knew so little. There is no real politics or struggle behind the two clubs now. It is raw brainless tribalism as far as I can see.

Well I'd like to see how a song can be banned. The only way to stop singing of these songs is to educate the singers. It takes generations for this to happen - it is probably already happening. It is worth noting that banning often has the opposite effect to what you are hoping to achieve.

If there are idiotic trolls on the site then the mods are there to deal with it. Personally I have not read anything on this thread I consider to be a wind-up. Perhaps you want to ban OWC members coming on here too? "To be honest" is a common phrase people use, I'm sure you know this but if thats your petty attempt at point scoring in a debate then fair enough.

Is my opinion any more worthless than yours?
