Be a proper test then to see if our politicians are actually any use at all. If the police move in and politicians abandon the people it will be a worse look. Hopefully it doesnt come to that

Any unionist attempting to make political hay out of nationalist politicians appearing at the protest need to be slapped back in their box as quickly as they jump out. The Portadown Lodge directly has blood on its hands over its position on drumcree and has no moral right to lecture anyone. Billy Wright. Willie McCrea. The murders of the Quinns. The murder of RUC officer O'Reilly. Umpteen other murders. Get to f**k.

Won't stop them. Bunch of c**ts with nothing positive to offer any part of society.

As someone said to me a dying kick from them. Nothing to offer so try to drag us back.

Saw something from Emerson basically saying that taking part in the unlawful gathering on the Garvaghy road yesterday was comparable to a careless driving charge.

Can the police really be seen to move in with batons/water cannon for that? It would be a horrible look and I can see why it didn't happen.

Bryson is a lot of things but he's been saying for months now him and others are going down legal routes to force through their ideology and block things like Casement/Irish Language etc. He recognises that Unionists need to do something or they will sleepwalk into a United Ireland. He's doing what he said he would and had some success at it.

Surely Nationalism has the resource to push back a bit more than we have the last while. His crashout on twitter the past 36 hours has been spectacular though!!

QuoteA solicitor for Garvaghy Road residents has said the Orange Order must now apply for a new Drumcree parade after thousands of nationalists blocked their route on Sunday.

Darragh Mackin, of Phoenix Law, said the Orange Order will have to submit a fresh application as the clock on the original notification has run down.

"This isn't just us saying this, they said it to the Court of Appeal on Saturday night," he said.

"The determinations are time-specific, and therefore when they lapse you must reapply.

"Whilst they can allow for a margin of appreciation to cater for the unprecedented events, it does not result in the time-limited determination extending it indefinitely.

"For the very same reasons the Orange Order's lawyers argued on Saturday night, the game is now up, a fresh application must be made."

"What's good for the goose is good for the gander."

However, loyalist activist Jamie Bryson said the Orange Order still has a legal right to march the Garvaghy Road.

"And that is the PSNI's position as well," he said.

"I spoke to the PSNI and their position is that they have turned back the parade so as a matter of law the parade formed up at 8am on Saturday morning and essentially as a matter of law has been marching on the spot since at the direction of the PSNI," he said.

"The only way by which that determination can be set aside is if the PSNI refer to the Secretary of State or if the Secretary of State intervenes of its own volition to set it aside," he told the BBC.

There was a heavy police presence in the Portadown area after the Parades Commission gave the controversial parade the go-ahead last week.

As part of its controversial determination, the commission gave permission for 35 Orange Order members to walk silently along the length of the route through the nationalist district.

The parade was ordered to begin at 8am and end by 9.30am on

An application by residents to hold a protest involving 5,000 people had earlier been withdrawn as court proceedings played out.

In total, three different court sittings, including one by the Court of Appeal, were held on Saturday and early Sunday.

By daybreak on Sunday, thousands of people gathered at strategic points along the route through the nationalist district, meaning the Orange march could not proceed.

Protesters dispersed at around midnight after being told that a fresh process to address the dispute was being initiated

A new application needed it would seem. Jamie Bryson v Darragh Mackin....who wins that fight?

From my reading of the legislation and the case law I don't agree with Darragh but he's a very good lawyer and I've been wrong before and no doubt will again.

There is an argument there but my two concerns is why would it be limited to the day and not the prescribed times and two if that was correct all that would have to happen is you delay a parade by sometimes as little as a few hours and then it can't take place without a full reconsideration. That seems unlikely to have been the intent of the legislation.
Is there a function to allow the PC to revisit their decision because of new info? like the fact that there is huge resistance and the PSNI are unlikely to be able to protect the parade and that forcing it down could endanger life?
Can they change their mind?

Yes there is a mechanism for that but I'm not convinced they would use it

Mary Lou on the radio there saying that a few weeks ago the DUP were at big pains saying Michelle O'Neill wasn't representing the office of First Minister when she met other devolved leaders in Cardiff so in that case she wasn't in Portadown yesterday as First Minister either. Fair point.

You are forgetting that unionists change their tune every 5 seconds to suit. Carla basically crying about the poor residents in scarva while hanging out with a masked mob and yet doesn't see any irony with her current position. Burrows saying there is no time to mess with this when Northern Ireland is in such a dire state with so many things need fixing yet only last week wanted debate with MON about how great NI was compared to the republic. All of them pretty much saying how awful it is and shows how protestants will be treated poorly in any future UI but sure f**k who cares how nationalists are treated right now lol, you couldn't make it up

A bit more serious but still not overly serious.

It's also not clear if residents have even committed a crime. It's a complex enough issue given Article 10 and 11 rights. There's a case on the subject called Ziegler in which the Supreme Court basically said whether it is or is not a crime will require a fact specific examination of the individual case looking at a range of factors to establish if the protest was a proportional response.

Quote from: imtommygunn on September 27, 2026, 06:22:46 PMI do think one of the things these feckers are doing is trying to discredit the "first minister" and say she is not a first minister for all. They actually think she is in an untenable position which I don't think she is. This after refusing to call her a first minister for all but you can bet today and tomorrow she will be called first minister.

Stormont will hardly last tomorrow.

Yip the rhetoric I have seen repeated is "if they cant allow us a simple march then how could we feel welcome in a UI"

The victimhood politics is fairly galling to listen to.

Bigoted orange bastards are not welcome in a United Ireland. So F**k off back to Scotland.

The question is how would Ulster Scot/orange culture fit into a unified Ireland. Ulster Protestant culture is closely tied with British nationalism.
Ulster Protestant culture is generally things like the Northern Ireland football team, motorbike racing and maybe rugby although that is quite mixed nowadays.

Many young Protestants don't even practice Christianity now so they won't be divided in that regard in a unified Ireland.

I don't think that Ulster Protestant history needs to be viewed as something evil. Everyone today is mixed to an extent anyway. I have a few Protestant surnames in my family tree over the past 5 generations so the planters were our ancestors too.

It's not like they're banned from marching. They march in the south. This one is divisive hence it's history. 2k plus are not. It is an insight into the psyche that it's not the tonnes of marches that are allowed no bother they focus on it's the one that isn't.
