Quote from: Mario on May 03, 2026, 07:12:30 AMBaker thought the ball was there to be won, and he did win it. Hard to hold back in the heat of battle but ultimately he should have done anything but risk a 2 point free. Other than that I thought he had a good game.

We should have went in at HT 15 points up. So many easy misses in contrast to some ridiculous 2 point efforts from McCarthy, McCarron, McCarville, Ward. Beggan is like a cheat code in the new rules too.

The ref was a joke too, couldn't touch Monaghan without the hand going up for a free or advantage. Ethan had a very untimely slip but he was still pushed for the sideline, mccarron broke the line.

On the plus side McGuckins kickouts were brilliant all day. He hit one towards Beggan which unfortunately led to a goal but it wasn't a howler. Other than that he was flawless and made a great save. Forbes has really stood up this year and put in another good performance. McGrogan was great, he wins so many high pressure short kickouts. Loughlin brilliant all year and was again today. Good to see McEvoy back and his size in the middle was a big plus. Ethan brilliant first 50 min.

Meenagh got it tactically spot on. We dominated Monaghan for most of the game but you can't legislate for those misses. He also can't be blamed for our lack of a bench which will continue to haunt this team in big games.

As sickening a defeat as you can get. Ulster final was there for us. Will be a hard one to recover from.
On Meenagh, he brought mcgurk on for C Doherty and reversed the sub five minutes later, Doherty looked out on his feet. Also held the lad Kearney, who looks have bit about him back to very late in the day when there was tired legs and momentum had shifted other way.
If we'd a better bench he wouldn't have brought the same players back on. Jack Doherty and Mcateer would have been great options but they walked away. He probably reversed the mcgurk sub because of the bad bounce that gave away possession. Hard for a young player to recover from that in such an intense game.

"You're a disgrace saying a player had a bad game"

" Everyone's putting the boot in"

We folded like a deck of cards, big men disappeared, substitutions were very iffy and then reversed. We lack a killer instinct, that used to be there.

Somebody said here we missed Mc Faul and that 100% right, someone with a ruthless streak that people are nearly afraid to let down. Chrissy was in the same boat, demanding so much more from everyone around him.
Who is doing that now?

Ah of course, to be truly mentally strong you have to come on here and give off about players, of course. How silly of us all. You are the mentally weak one with your comments. Yes dissect the game but how does, Glass isn't our leader, Doherty and McGuigan go missing when it counts show anything but a bad loser with a whingers mentality.
Call out what you see. Did any of them 3 mentioned have a good game today?
Anyone in the terrace could see Doherty was gone after 10mins of 2nd half.
Did Conor Glass catch 1 ball at midfield all day? What big moments was he involved in? On at least 3 occasions in last 15mins of normal time he was 1 of the 3 left up front!

And just for the record because I'll be getting lumped in with the rest and not liking city players,Baker had a good game today and I wouldn't be blaming him at all.
How Niall Toner doesn't have the game management know how to foul the man that won kickout, give him 4/5metres if he tries tap and go and foul him again. There was 25seconds to go.

Saying we are mentally weak in the height of the game isn't a personal attack for players off field personality etc. nobody questioned their commitment, nobody said they aren't good lads but the fact is when the pressure gets put on, momentum swings and we are in the melting pot it's us that always comes out 2nd best in the last 2 years.

Everyone getting fairly uptight because someone/ people gave an opinion on a team in a forum set up to give opinions? If you're in here calling people "arseholes" maybe you're the keyboard warrior because I'm fairly sure you wouldn't say that when standing in front of them.

Quit yo Jibbajabba most definitely wouldn't

I didnt call anyone an 'arsehole' for a start. You see here is where your argument falls down, Doherty and McGuigan have won two Ulster metals and a Division one title- when the heat was on. They stepped up and helped us over the line. Go missing on the big days? Give me a break.

Glass has bee  flogged these last few years for club and county. He has an All Star but because he has moved position he is now being pillored for poor midfield play?

We shouldn't have lost that game but that was down to our game management, not a soft mentality. We were naive and made poor decisions. Hopefully we learn from that.

Next thing will be ' its that C from tyrones fault just like it was Tally's,M Hartes and Horse Devlins, they bottled it and not the ref,not your manager, just waiting for let's get Gallagher back again brigade to start shouting

Like Mc Guinness said after the defeat by Down last week, we were beat and it wasn't in the script but we move on to the next competition i.e. the All-Ireland series. Derry, although very disappointed will have the same thought process. Learn from it and move on.

Half-time 2-10
Full Time 3-16
Extra-Time 3-23

The scores above would have qon most footbll games but Monaghan's 2 pointers brought them back into it and momentum then took over. Hard to stop that in game.

Anybody have the all subs and timings list?

He's not our leader, Doherty and Mc Guigan go missing when the pressure really goes on.
Mentally soft and easy to get at.

I most def would call you an arsehole if I met you. Would you say this to the three guys in question? Thought not. Ghost was worse and he's doubled down but you've form for this

Interstellar

Quote from: Interstellar on April 19, 2026, 10:25:24 PMDerry's finishing throughout the league was poor with multiple goal opportunities missed. Defence was also poor with teams going through us far too easily. I didn't see anything different yesterday against very poor opposition. A big improvement is needed against Monaghan who are past masters of over achievement for their group of players.

Just saying after the Antrim game.

I've no desire to bring Gallagher back, still have his shadow looming over us and I think that's half the problem. We played with a bit of swagger under RG and we just can't seem to get back there. We had a ruthlessness about us and feared nobody. I do think Meenagh has steadied the ship after a few rough years but we couldn't do what Monaghan did today. They weren't taking no for an answer, played to their strengths and clawed their way back in. Pure doggedness that we seem to have lost and something I don't think is teachable.

Serious work needing done after all those missed opportunities, if even half of them were executed it would be a different tale today. Was it 7 2pointers Monaghan scored in the end? We could only dream of it. I still believe Derry are capable of beating anyone on their day if we can get our act together.

I was at the game and even when we were on top, the amount of wides was criminal and I never felt comfortable. The defence is not strong enough as a unit and gave away a few silly frees. Once Monaghan got the momentum and got a few two pointers they sniffed the win.

I think this squad needs a slight rebuild, bring in a few of the u21s to freshen up the squad, freshen up training and maybe some of them will be good enough to make it - the likes of Sergeant when he is fit.

Is there something to be said that Derry always play like a league team? We have won 7 National Leagues and only one Sam Maguire. 7 National leagues is proof that Derry is a good football county with quality footballers. But this does not translate into Championhip football - too many times we get turned over like yesterday when Monaghan got into Championship mode in the second half we capitulated in the end; we got turned over in 2001 by Galway in the semi-final (and they hammered Meath in the final), and in 2023 by Kerry when we played unreal football.

The better players lost yesterday imo.
Will they learn from the defeat?
My main concern from yesterday (we played some great football) was the wides and the lack of solidity at the back. Was there an argument for putting big Rogers in at full back in the second half as Monaghan began to lump in the occasional high ball?

I would say that the Derry dressing room was a morgue yesterday after that game.

Yesterdays game can either make or break this team. We will see how they respond in the next game.

I like the idea of Roger's returning to FB, he just knows how to operate back there, one thing is McEvoy cannot come out of that middle 8 again it would be a waste. I know some people aren't as high on Higgins as I am but I think he should be developed at 9 going forward

Derry worse defeat, in the circumstances, since Galway 2001 and Tyrone 1995. By the way whos Derry 2 pt shooters.? Nobody wanted to take them on. Derry lost massive leads last yr in the league and nothing changed.

Galway 2001 was more comparable to the Kerry 2023 game.
In my case Galway 2001 will always haunt me as it deprived me of the experience of going to an All Ireland final as a child.

Fermanagh 08 comes to mind as well.

I thought Paudie played really well and was the one man I wanted on the ball in defence and attack towards the end of the game. Forbes for his first full year at it played his heart out. Also, Ethan was unplayable for spells. Just a shame we didn't get over the line as I think we would have improved further in the final.

Surely McEvoy is McKinless longer term replacement. McKinless is not the force of the past after awful awful injuries. McEvoy at 6 longer term is surely the way forward. Rogers has been an incredible player for Derry, would easily grace the best 11 but I do think he could fall back to defence in the next few seasons. Higgins is a great talent. Forbes will be a huge player for the future. We still have a decent age profile in the team.

Young lads like Murray, Forbes, McEvoy, Higgins can hopefully push on and become the bedrock of the team with experienced men like Glass, Rogers, McGuigan, McCluskey adding a great blend of youth and experience.

Ok dokie Andy Tate...hopefully you're down in Owenbeg on Tues to transfer some of your knowledge to management.

With a kick of a 2 pointer this thread has gone full Tyrone thread...cowards is an apt description. Imagine slagging off our county men behind forum usernames, it absolutely blows my mind. Shameful.

I'd agree with pretty much all Mario said, and your bit above statto. We definitely needed fresh legs on.

An away day for the 1st round of the qualifiers. Some big hitters on the road that round .

1 of those 7 x 2 pointers goes an inch wide and it's a completely different story

Sure what else would you expect from this thread. Shows how much some of these boys know about football when their analysis is personal jibes about certain players!

Wides in the first half lost this game. The boys that allowed themselves and each other to take the foot off the pedal lost this game not the mistakes at the end.

Also would agree with the fact that our lack of quality and experience (outside shea downey & toner) on the bench cost us and will do again.

I wouldn't be happy if I was the subs. Put on and then taken off for extra time
