Quote from: Truth hurts on January 22, 2026, 11:49:20 AMThere will always be a place for the Sigerson but I cannot see county players buying into it for much longer. Playing without the intercounty stars would mean more to the colleges as last evenings match was played like a friendly game.
Always a tough one. If a county player is on a scholarship the college *should* get their priority this time of year in particular.

Some colleges enforce that better than others.

I remember a dual player when I was there. Hurling and football for college, county, county u21, club and club u21. All wanted him to train and play. Absolutely bonkers workload and I am amazed he didn't break down.

This is where someone with an ounce of sense in the club should sit the player down map the season by games, cherry picking games that mean the most, then see what you can feasibly do training wise on a priority basis, then tell the mangers thats what they're getting. The examples of dual would be rare these days, but across the board managers looking their pound of flesh hugely off-putting and know plenty would would run players into the ground for their own ends, I remember lads doing Sigerson championship training sessions in the morning and club pre season sessions the same evening, as you say, amazed they all didn't break down, but some did and then everyone lost in the long run

Managers don't care for players.

They all want their pound of flesh unfortunately.

Players don't care for players either is what I find. Most players I've met have a genuine struggle accepting that a player who doesn't train directly with the team and as often as him and hard as him, might be considered above him in the pecking order.

Managers might enforce standards, but players demand them.

Mercenary managers certainly don't.. There's still about 3% inhouse managers, and they will care

I would agree with that - other players would demand you trained with them all the time no matter what else was going on. I would've agreements with managers about training around Uni/school/county teams and there was senior players (who never played outside the club) would pressure you to get to train with them on top of everything else.

Captain Obvious

Queens hitting form at the right time, into the last 4 with a 3-18 to 2-16 win against TU Dublin.

Blowitupref

Last year's two Finalists knocked out at the quarter final stage tonight. UCD beaten by University Galway 0-15 to 0-14 and DCU beaten by UCC 3-16 to 1-20

I watched bits of DCU v UCC and UL v Maynooth. Both great games. DCU kicked it away a bit but UCC have a serious squad of talent.

Should be 2 excellent semis. It's a shame these games don't get more coverage with the quality of them.

Is the semi final Queen's v UL as they have already played UCC and NUIG?

Think there's a draw for them still?

McCartan and Logan doing a great job with QUB not a fantastic side on paper but really maxing out on them.  Ryan McQuillan should be having a good year with Antrim if can carry his form into county jersey.

Did Conor Hand come on too? I see a P McErlain in the subs - is that the St Brigids fella? The younger Hynds is in the subs too. Good to see a few antrim ones about that level of football.

Conor O'Neill looks a top top player at 6 for them.
