Comparing NFL to traditional field sports in terms of action, intensity, speed etc is the wrong way to approach enjoying the sport.

The game is closer in terms of purpose to chess than it is to e.g. soccer. That the combatants tend to be 6' 4", 18 stone monsters shouldn't overshadow the fact that it's primarily a game of strategy, coaching and adaptation more than it is of power.

It wouldn't work as a concept if everything was rushed. The decision makers need time to breathe and learn. Without this, it would just be nonsensical chaos.

A sanitised sport just doesn't appeal to me.

Even within that, 40 seconds to basically pick yourself up after wrestling a 300 lb man, offensive, defensive coordinators calling a play, qb or defensive captain relaying that to the team and then get set to go again isn't a lot of time. If you've ever heard the QB calling the plays that stuff is insane too. He'll call maybe 15 random words that mean nothing to an onlooker but the message is in there for every player and their role on the play. Must take a lot to remember all that whilst in the intensity of a match.

They also do 100m in 11 seconds flat.

See McAtamney (played Derry U20) scored a few field goals for New York there last nite.

dec

Jude McAtamney misses two extra points Giants lost by one

SaffronSports

Kind of thing that can get you unemployed very quickly in the NFL

Wildweasel74

He missed one the week before. You cant be missing them as there 95% scores. Missing 2 get him dropped bck to reserve  U understand 2 long range field goals l.

Mcatamneys college stats aren't great either. I'm struggling to see how he's getting any games at all.

gallsman

Because teams need practice squad players and when Gano got hurt, he beat Koo (one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, albeit one who was just released by the Falcons) in a kicking contest.

markl121

I doubt he will be kicking next week or indeed ever again now

gallsman

I'd be shocked if he's there this weekend alright. Depending on Gano's injury he may be back to the practice squad or he may be released altogether. He'll probably land on another practice squad for a while if so.

Complicating factor in his case is that Daboll could well be fired soon.

Is he still eligible for International Pathway spot after hes been elevated? That'll be his only shot if released, and i would even gave that at a very slim chance if being honest. There's 20 FA kickers just off the top of my head that could/should get signed to a Practice squad before him.

lurganblue

Can they sign from other practice squads? Smyth looks a quality kicker and has been very good in any pre season games.  It's a shame for him that Grupe has been decent and thus 1st choice.

gallsman

Any team can sign a player from another team's practice squad, but it must be to their active roster.
