Is it a bit cringe seeing SF asking the Brits for more money?

It's the only thing they are capable of

Quote from: Sportacus on June 06, 2025, 11:30:46 PMBritain is broke. They shrunk their economy with Brexit and now they have weapons to pay for as well as the NHS.  Casement wouldn't make the Top 1000 issues for the average Red Wall Labour MP. So there's absolutely no incentive for them to hand over a penny at the Spending Review, other than to make Hilary Benn go away for another while.  It really is at best crumbs off the table. Or it could be extraordinarily bad expectation management by the Ulster Council, which they are well capable of.

But they've managed so many aspects of this project so well so far.....

I'll be absolutely gobsmacked if the Brits provide anywhere near enough money to get the current version of the stadium built.

I could easily see the Brits coming out and saying something like "we're not going to hand over at least £100 million plus to increase the capacity of the largest GAA stadium in Ulster by 5,000 when the current one sells out once in the year."

I bet that all of the spnsors will be asked to pony up more money. That includes the GAA @15m and the Irish Govt @43m

I'm not sure about the Irish government whose contribution is entirely gratuitous, but it would be hard to the GAA not to provide an increased amount with the same real value as their original contribution, after all the ticket prices have gone up.

Surely the GAA's 15m, or what's left of it, has been gathering interest as it rests in their account.

I see Michelle reckons Antrim Gaels deserve a world class stadium. Can one ask why, given that the combined crowds for all Antrim matches this year wouldn't have filled Casement.

Quote from: illdecide on June 05, 2025, 08:50:07 AMI hear the Brits have stomped up the cash, it will be released in such a way that it will not send the bitter, catholic hating, sectarian, racist, twisted brethren into a meltdown.

How are they planning to do that?

I've no idea, just what I think. But if there's a way of hiding things and doing it illegally then the Brits are experts at it.
I know the loyalist knuckle draggers aren't the brightest but even they'll notice a big stadium. Not sure how the Brits spin it unless they're giving them even more money for something else at the same time.

Even if they don't notice it, Stephen Nolan and Sam McBride will make sure they hear about it.

Is that the same Sam who attends GAA games to watch his kids play?

Never mind Antrim - the Ulster Championship attendences have been around the 100k mark (sometimes more, sometimes less) for a good while. The overall predicted total attendences in a year at a 34k Casement are likely to be just feeble. The project wouldn't even make much sense if Clones didn't exist, but when Clones already exists it's utter madness. Spending £270 million (best case scenario) to increase overall capacity by 5k is lunacy.

If Ulster GAA were a Division 1 / 2 football club in England they would never in a million years build a stadium like Casement based on attendance figures for Antrim games or any other Ulster games.

While Antrim deserve a decent stadium there is no need either for a white elephant that commercially will never wipe its face.

I was in Owenbeg a few years ago and if every county in Ulster could get to the stage they have something like that that would make more sense on a number of fronts including ££.

Let's be honest though, every county stadium in the GAA (with very, very few exceptions) is a white elephant that is lucky to be full once a year.

I'm not using this as an excuse to argue for "build Casement" but Clones is also a kip, with massive infrastructure problems that's filled once a year.

Could Corrigan Park be developed into a 10 or 12k stadium?

Unfortunately, the British take our taxes so why not any for money back?

Who do you think funds the SF gravy train of MPs, MLAs, Councillors, expenses along with all the other hanger ons plus 'community' funding?
