Long time lurker first time poster as they say. Enjoyed the game last night, team did well to pick up a point when at half time it seemed all was lost. Still missing some key men, McGrogan returning is a big boost. How far away is Clucky- we really miss him.

I think we will probably be relegated this year but at least we have introduced some new guys to the panel and Tally is getting his feet under the table. Still a few tweaks needed and really unsure about Rogers as a no.6. His ability for long range shooting from midfield would be perfect for the 2 pointers. Maybe McGrogan can be the no. 6 going forward. Probably not though.

All in all the new rules were very good, except the 50 metre rule which everyone agrees is far too draconian. It has to go. Could you imagine an AL final decided on such a call. It wouldn't be right. It's the only rule I actively dislike.

Quote from: tbrick18 on February 15, 2025, 11:13:46 PMBrilliant 2nd half from Derry, woeful first half.
We could have won it, but given that first half when it seemed like we'd be hammered, a draw feels like a win.

Some match ups were obviously wrong, and it did take a while but atvleast management saw it and changed it.

Murray changed the dynamic of the game when he came in, but I'm not sure he's a starter. In the games he starts, he doesn't have the same impact so maybe we get more from him as a sub.
Interesting that Murphy wasnt on panel, is he injured?

I really don't see that Mcnicholl is bringing much more benefit to the team either.
For me, Lynch saves that goal and his kickouts are much better. He might not be as agile out the field, but still offers plenty from open play and in contesting kickouts. I feel he's been hard done by. Not sure where Mcnicholl as an option came from but I don't thinknits working.

Once again midfield is our real problem. In that first half we hardly won a kickout or break ball.  With these new rules that puts defence under real pressure, so I think it's unfair to single out the likes of Baker as being found out. In the 2nd half when we won the majority of kickouts and breaks, our defence was fine.
We need to sort out midfield and also work on a short kick option which we don't have. Galway have one and used it a  umber of times.

I think we are playing with a lack of confidence. Balls dropping into the keepers hands show that, being blocked too often, handling errors, turning back for an easy pass rather than continuing the run. Ethan doc particularly low on confidence I think.

All that said, we're not too far away.
Should have beat kerry, could have beat galway and tyrone was just too soon for us.
Starting to get injured players back will help too. Would be great to stay in div 1, but the Ulster first round is the priority.

Ethan low on confidence? Did you not watch the Kerry game he was one of best players on the pitch.

Tallys comments after the game don't bode well for Lynch. Talking about how the new rules don't suit traditional goalkeepers. Neil McNicholl is a good player and is starting to play with more confidence. Very unlucky not to get a goal. Looked to be going in top corner from where I was standing before defender cleared it. But he's never going to be a better shot stopper or better at kickouts than Lynch. For that reason I'd have Lynch back in

I think Ethan isn't playing the way he was, quite a few handling errors, getting blocked, kicks dropping short. He's not breaking the tackle the way he would have done. Example, in the first half he was almost through on goal, another couple of steps and he was in and that's what we'd have seen from him in the past. I instead he stopped and played it back out.
He's  not playing badly, just not as well as he was in previous seasons, imo.

I think we're OK in the forward dept if we get the ball in quickly.

Marty Bradley played well enough last night and it's great to see mcgrogan back.

Think this is called doubling down lol.

Say something really stupid, get called out on it, come back with proof that your stupidity wasn't just a one-off.

I say many stupid things, I fully agree.
But I qualify my stupidity with comments like "imo" to give myself cover in saying that it's not necessarily fact, just opinion.
And I do this repeatedly, so you are right, it's not just a one-off.

Congratulations for spotting this and letting us all know how clever you are by doing so.  ;D  ::)

We probably needed a win though as it's gonna take at least 6 points to stay up. Galway are always tough though and they seem to be the form team regarding 2 pointers, they scored another 4 tonight after scoring 7 the last day. Even if we get relegated we are developing a bit of squad depth with some of the subs doing well.

Giving fellas minutes doesn't necessarily create squad depth.

And for my next trick.......

Sat in Croke Pk against this current Dublin team and the speed / running power we have is a good fixture for us. Wont be much in it but heading into a weeks break with potentially 3 points on the board with the league start we've had would be good. 2 points v Mayo at home , nick a point in Ballyshannon or Armagh (a team missing so many players is reportedly starting the tea lady in midfield next week)...survival secured 🙌

Realistically, this is a reset year for us. We have too many injuries and a new manager at the helm. It's going to be a year of learning and that'll most likely mean being on the back foot for a while. Our challenge will be to get some of the injured lads back and blood a few players while hopefully being competitive for as long into the summer as we can. Getting relegated isn't the be-all and end-all but it would be a nice boost to the year to stay in Div 1. We have to stop leaking goals as we don't know from one game to the next at the minute how many we are going to concede. And Donegal are licking their lips at that prospect!!

First choice midfield available which cleaned Derry out in last years championship so no issues there.

Real Talk

Don't believe we will get the points to stay in Div 1,  Dublin, Armagh and Donegal will be too strong for us at this moment in time and Mayo will be tricky enough too.

The important thing is to continue to improve  our team performances and give our squad actual playing-time so that we can head into the key part of the season with a settled team and all our injuries healed.

First match v Donegal in the Ulster Championship we're not likely to win so we need to do well in the Group stages of the All Ireland series.

Of the U20's who do you folks think should be tried in the Squad ?

oakleaflad

Would like to see Bradley get another run in defense and McMonagle get a run out again at Croke Park. I think he has a bit about him and the space could suit him.

Hopefully Murray can show well again, either from the start or bench.

From the U20's probably looking at Forbes and Danny McDermott for this season. Others might need a year or two.

Wonder is Loughlin far away? Hoping he'll be back soon. McGrogan maybe 20-25mins this time? Not sure D Cassidy is a WHB

jb77

Loughlin and clucky are both match/april I think?

JGDoire
