Quote from: LC on December 22, 2024, 02:12:46 PMRead the article in the IN yesterday with Calon Mooney.

Seemed to be fairly open and honest about a lot of things.  For some guys the penny drops when they have hung up the boots and by that stage it is too late on so many fronts and importantly the last thing that they would do is admit it.

From reading the article it would seem he was at Jordanstown for a couple of years however I imagine it was purely for football reasons with no benefit gained academically .  I'm sure he would not be the first baller that has went through Jordanstown and career wise down the line have realised that it did not help them in the long term.

When you go looking for a mortgage in years to come payslips have more relevance than having played Sigerson.
Think that's a condescending viewpoint on Jordanstown any lad could go to uni and drop out or not get the grades at uni they would have wanted in their degree. Playing football has opened plenty of doors for lads in the past and I dare say will continue to do so.

Iam no expert on these things but i woud think it woud have something to do with the same mangers in down getting jobs over and over an worst still clubs giving these men jobs who do nothing.seems to be all the best ones in louth??look at louth last year getting to sam quarter final, while down won taltenn cup but i think way off a good team.think theres something there??

I think you should look into it again. Poacher, Poland and Franklin are not in Louth.

S Poacher:
Leitrim

M Poland:
Down LGFA

T Franklin:
Rostrevor

Murray, Morgan, McCartan and McAlinden I believe are in Louth. We also have J McCartan and  L Coulter in Monaghan (Clontibret), R McShane in Armagh (Shane O'Neills), R McMahon in Armagh (Clan Na Gael) but I believe Pete McGrath may have left Antrim (Aghnagallon).

I'd guess it's a gathering of four things:

One being that wages / financial power in Louth are a bit higher.

Two being that the level of coaching in the north is more highly regarded than that of the south, so Northern coaches - rightly or wrongly - are sought after in the wee county.

Three being that many a coach neither wishes to coach their own club (financial and emotional reasons) or coach against their own club (emotional reasons).

Four being that Kilcoo are in Down and nobody really believes they can beat them, so if you're being judged on championship success, coaching in Down is a death sentence.

This is the list of Down men in Louth (as far as I am aware - but the trend is more and more are heading that way):

Cathal Murray - Ardee
Steven Poacher - St Mochtas (apparently he's double jobbing)
John Kennedy - St Fechins
Eamon Morgan - Dundalk Young Irelanders
Kevin McKernan - Dundalk Gaels
Ronan McCartan - Dreadnots
Glenn Burden - Na Piarsaigh
Miceal Magill - Geraldines
Laurence McAlinden - Naomh Malachi

I believe a lot (maybe all of them) have a Down coach with them

That's all I know. Would be interesting to see in other counties i.e. Armagh, Antrim

In response to The Wobbler, lots of valid points. The only true answer you will get is if you ask one of the managers in question

Does anyone have the Armagh/Antrim/Monaghan/any other counties management list? The list above for Louth is correct according to my 2 sources. Would be very interesting to see the exact number of Down coaches out of the county in total. A genuine debate should be arising out of this.

Near sure that in Armagh last year there would have been more Tyrone men than Down men looking after teams. Vast majority would be Armagh managers. Around half of the clubs in the county would have had clubmen in charge by the time championship came around.

Ronan McMahon - Clan na Gael
Danny Hughes - Culloville (now Mayobridge)
Gareth Thornton - Pearse Ogs
Niall McAleenan - Killeavy (left mid season)

For 2025 - Ryan McShane - Shane O'Neills

I think I read on up that Cillian Laverty has went to Dorsey. I think Mickey McVeigh is at Thomas Davis? That would leave the following:

Justin Lynch - Clann Eireann (coach)
Gareth Thornton - Pearse Og
Ronan McMahon - Clan na Gael
Ryan McShane - Shane O'Neills
Cillian Laverty - Dorsey
Mickey McVeigh - Thomas Davis

Would that be all Armagh? Surely there should be more? We need Antrim, Monaghan and any other county now. So far by my reckoning that's 14 managers and probably the same again coaching. If we can get the names and numbers for the other counties it will be very interesting reading.
