Seriously, who are the genuine contenders now that RG has been voted against by county board last night? Realistically there are no standout candidates now that Malachy has went to tyrone. Here's my list of names in no particular order and by no means who I would select. My selection was malachy orourke last year and would have been prepared to to wait until after Glen's all ireland heroics but I believe he wasn't interested or county board messed up.
    1. Andy moran
    2. Tony mcentee
    3. Damien mcerlain
    4. Barry dillon
    5. Oisin mcconville
    6. Conleth gilligan

Like I said these are not in order or even who I would consider. They are just names of men who are free or have close ties with derry. None of these I believe to be the right candidate..but who knows?? Our county board certainly don't.

Does the next Derry manager have to have been nominated by the clubs?

No not at all...Gallagher wasn't nominated by clubs when he was appointed. County board overruled the clubs who i think had nominated johnny mcbride I believe at the time...they may try overrule them again but it won't be RG this time..

Any idea who has been nominated?

I find it very hard to believe there's not someone already appointed but not announced. You'd believe that MOR hasn't been appointed Tyrone manager yet some of them knew weeks ago going by comments made.

I don't think 1,3,5,6 are an option.

Ciaran Meenagh has to be an option too unless the CB burnt their bridges with him?

Should they not have gave Meenagh a year last year. Think Derry gonna drop way bck into the pack, and a opportunity to win a All-Ireland drop away. I think Gallagher,O'Rourke,McGuinness. Where the only options if available. to bring the best out of the Derry team.Anybody else gonna be on a hiding to nothing as there gonna be no easy in year, as we lost last year already.

I would have thought that the Derry job would be one of the most appealing in Ireland strange that o Rourke didn't seem interested or wasn't approached given he would have worked with the best players in Derry.

He always works with Porter who is a tyrone man and wanted to wait for the tyrone job. Simple as that. I'm just surprised tyrone have gone for a fermanagh man. They're now trying to claim he's really tyrone because he lives there but that's garbage, Roy keane has lived in england for years but he's not english.

After all this waiting and waiting and stilk waiting, this appointing can only be nothing but underwhelming.

A good manager helps but surely the players must take some ownership of the whole process themselves?

Someone seems annoyed that they didnt get RG or Malachy. Malachy played for a tyrone club team so makes him more of a tyrone man than most.

Derry obviously have no issues with outside managers as they are willing to appoint anyone no matter what allegations are put to them or who they have previously managed.

Derry could be used as a case study on how to balls up a talented bunch of players with ridiculous management changes.

McKaigue on the GAA social last year admitted was heavily involved in Hartes appointment so would think senior players would be involved.

Yep mckaigue was working with devlin at ardboe coaching, he played a big role in the persuading the co.board to go with harte and devlin. The main issue now is though the majority of the players actually want Rory Gallagher. It's no big surprise. He was spotted having coffee with a few players from the panel recently. My fear is if the players don't get him and end up with someone inferior or an underwhelming appointment is made then things could turn sour quite quickly for derry. The catalyst for derry over the last 5 years since has been the players all buying into a management who had them eating out of the palm of their hands. This hasn't happened in derry since eamon Coleman. That's what RG brought. A siege mentality, a close knit group who almost treated derry like their club team. When I look at the potential candidates out there I can't see any of them bringing that type of thunder and mentality to the group. Orourke would have been ideal. Also a jim mcguinness last year before he went to donegal brings a similar mindset. I don't believe we have anyone with in the county capable of that. God knows where we turn..but this is the single most important appointment in derry footballs history. Never have we been so successful at underage, our senior team with proper manager looks primed to stay on the top 4 or 5 teams for foreseeable future..if we get this wrong we could end up ruining a full generation of talent and throw away a potential chance to reach an all ireland final for first time since 1993. Please get it right co.board

You need a top manager to win top honours.
