Quote from: Mourne Red on July 06, 2024, 03:15:32 PMSome amount of yapping about SDLP not standing aside in ED.. If SF couldn't convince an extra 180 to vote for them then only themselves to blame.

They need to run a big canvass campaign in ED & Foyle if they want to get those two seats to get the votes they need time.

Also need to see their MPs doing something haven't seen Hazard doing anything in South Down bar leaving the kids off to nursery same time as I leave my own off

SDLP had a higher poll than SF last time out as well.

The entitlement of SF is off the chart.
Has anyone yapped about East Derry?

Joe Brolly for one but don't worry Matthew O'Toole put him back in his box
Aw here. Is there anything Joe doesn't yap about lol.

In hindsight it is a pity they didn't step aside to get the seat off the DUP and get that p***k Campbell out but no one was calling for it pre election especially since SDLP were closer than SF the last time.

It's a nonsense debate really. It's no different than a DUPer saying 'Oh why didn't the UUP and TUV stand aside so Flegory isn't in such danger'.

If we go down the election pact road Unionism wins. For a while anyway.
Yeah true.

Would have been nice to have seen Flegory out on his hole though.

I cannot understand Scottish nationalism.  How was there a big surge for SNP and the associated constitutional change, and now they've all changed their minds and gone back to Labour? Are they really nationalists?
SNP half a million votes down on 2019.
Turn out down too.
Hopefully a load of Independence supporters not bothering with a Westminster vote but it doesn't look good for them or their cause.

A Province once again.....

strange nation

Two things though - corruption in the party and the thing round definition of a woman which was very controversial. People in Scotland less inclined to vote purely on the nationalism thing particularly when there will be no referendum for a long time.

Only themselves to blame? Almost makes it sound like closing a 9,000 vote gap down to 180 was a failure on their part. I'd imagine that gap wasn't closed (taking literally everyone by surprise in the process) through a lack of effort.

Two things on that..
1. I haven't seen a single SF rep attacking the SDLP for not standing aside. Only a few randomers on twitter.
2. Perhaps unfair to claim entitlement in any case. Not only did they not request the SDLP to stand aside, but they themselves voluntarily stood aside in four constituencies: Belfast East, Belfast South and Mid Down, Lagan Valley and North Down in order to boost the chances of other progressive parties. And before anyone throws out the "sectarian pact" waffle. They didnt stand aside for the benefit of just progressive nationalist parties, but in three of those four, it was to aid the alliance party's chances.

Were did I say it was a failure? I'm saying don't go blaming Stoopers not stepping down for not winning.. They're be undecided voters in Aontu and SDLP and they couldn't convince them and for SF voters to say SDLP should have stood down for them to win a seat which as you said no one thought was up for grabs is a stupid thing to say.

Armagh18

Who are you arguing with? No one only a few ejits are saying they should have stood aside and absolutely no one was saying it before the election.

So Benn adamant that there's only one criteria for a border poll and SOS has to feel a majority would vote for a UI. So perhaps the likes of Joe Brolly should leave Carla Hunter alone and ask why Sinn Fein are stepping aside for Alliance. Those votes do not contribute to the overall nationalist vote and will only hold back that decision.

I saw him having some back and forth with Matthew O'Toole of the SDLP on Twitter, he seemed pleased with himself as he was then retweeting his own replies for some reason, maybe didn't get the number of likes he was looking for.

I mean a 100% bona fide narcissist

LeoMc

Definitely a few more seats in play now.
It could well be Sammy and Gregory's last hurrah with Alliance in East Antrim and SF in East Londonderry :-X  next time out.
LV will see a coordinated Unionist effort to win it back, much like EB, though FST probably no longer a marginal and solidly green.
Upper Bann needs a big Nationalist figurehead to put pressure on Lockhart.

This was probably also a last time lucky for Jim Allister and the TUV with no natural replacement.
