NAG1

I couldn't see it being kept in the present format, but there will be some transitional body required.

The vast majority are happy with the status quo

Alliance are unionists ffs  ;D

Are you sure about that?
- many unionists are pro-european and have Irish passports
- many unionists are realising that english doesnt give a shit about them
- many uniontists would rather be a big fish in a wee pond in Dublin, than a wee fish in London
- many nationalists won't even vote in british elections, yet have to pay tax to the english

When you say the vast majority (??) of nationlaists are "happy with the status quo" you are clearly very wrong. Don't confuse "happy" with inertia.

Inertia is hard to shift from the status quo in such scenarios, Just ask the SNP..

Even if a unionist ticked the box for those top 3 criteria, when it came to ticking the box in a referendum they'd chose remain part of the UK. That's what unionism is.

Unionsits in a perverse way have more about them than Torys, at least they stand for something

Imagine being a Tory/voting Tory, they epitomise everything repugnant about being a 'tan'

Quote from: Feckitt on June 25, 2024, 09:18:06 PMLast year in the 2022 Northern Ireland Local Elections, Nationalists outpolled Unionists for the first time ever in the 100 year history of the Northern state.  My prediction for this election is that this will happen again next week.  The demographic tide cannot be turned and Unionists will never ever win another election again, including the Unity Referendum.

1974 General Election, Unionists 61.9% - Nationalists 30.2%

1998 Assembly Election, Unionists 50.7% - Nationalists 39.6%

2019 General Election, Unionists 43.2% - Nationalists 40.1%

2022 Assembly Election, Unionists 42.3% - Nationalists 40.5%

2023 Local Election, Unionists 40.1% - Nationalists 43.9%

2024 General Election ?????????

The alliance vote is also considerably greener these days. There was a euro election in 99 were nationalists hit 45% hence why unionists keep saying the nationalist vote hasn't moved in 25 years they conveniently ignore the 15% drop in the unionist vote.

Hopefully further traction for a border poll.

I would say you'd see them results a lot better on a graph.  It'd be very visual.

In terms of the viewpoint of our politicians it is up there with asking if turkeys want to vote for Christmas.

What would happen to our 'hard working' MLAs and all the other sows who have their heads buried in the Stormont trough?

Will there be a Stormont in a federal Ireland in any UI proposal do you think?

There will be some type of Home Rule or Devolved Parliament.

It would be a colossal drain on resources. I can understand why Unionists might want it - would there be any actual benefit to the six counties in keeping Stormont?

Does keeping Stormont  when there's  a United ireland mean there's not really a United ireland?

Many countries have sub-national parliaments.

Ireland's population is over 7 million, Switzerland is about 8.5

gallsman

Bosnia is half the size and has autonomous regions. Serbia is smaller and has autonomous regions. Both have a hell a lot of a bloodier recent history. Belgium is significantly smaller geographically, with a larger population.

As for "what benefit" might there be, it might help stop men with guns from killing people for one.

Only to imbeciles.

Conservatives are screwed with a week to go. Which is thoroughly deserved of course. Yet Labour will have an enormous majority despite still representing less than half the voters.

A lot of Tory politicians and voters are big fans of PR all of a sudden.

It isn't clear how it would do that. If Ireland is united it is because there is a nationalist majority in the 6 counties, leaving a parliament there would not provide a unionist majority.
