He could also be minister for sustainable growth. I was at a meeting in the Gaeltacht in February and there was huge support for a social housing programme.
If FF and FG take the risk of a second election so that they can belatedly decide that there is no option but to do a deal "for the good of the country" is there any chance that this will backfire with people voting differently or a significant number just not voting at all?

Fianna Fail have more growth potential in opposition than in Government. Going in will enable their rivals SF to directly attack them. Staying outside and parking the bus for another 12 - 18 months lets them build themselves up for power. Fine Gael, I suspect will hold together the alliance in power and run the country but it will be pulled down after 1 year. During that year I suspect Adams will move aside and Sinn Fein momentum from fresh leadership has the potential to enable massive growth, however with its main target beside them in opposition that growth will be stunted. They are certainly very clever, but I do think they are part of a public service spending problem. They have a nice circular arrangement whereby they are public representatives and their private business is also hired by public bodies, such as the Kerry County Council, of which they both were members. They take in an awful lot of public money and yet criticise public servants.
As an aside, I know of a man in a different county to the Healy-Raes who used to be a County Councillor and a member of the Health Board and VEC Board. He, and others like him, used to try to schedule the meetings for the same day and claim expenses for the 3 round trips. Back around 2000 he took in something like €90,000 a year in expenses to add to his full time PS job.
And we know it is not limited to members of the local boards, remember the German documentary on MEPs signing in on a Friday morning with their luggage on the way to the airport, but claiming expenses for that day?
How quickly people forget!
The Healy Raes are part of the worst strain of old Fianna Fail. The Kerry versions of Ray Burke and P Flynn
Here is that report on the MEPS claiming a daily allowance at 7am for that day's work, with their luggage to travel home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzEQWigzz30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzEQWigzz30)
I think Fianna Fáil are in danger of playing an absolute blinder here. Fine Gael need to be very careful. This is a situation where their desire to hold power/do what's best for the country (delete as you see fit) may run them right out of government after the next election, which will be at the behest of Fianna Fáil if their plans go as they want them too.
I think this is the scenario Fianna Fáil want...
Fine Gael form a minority government, with the help of 10 or so independents, and maybe a couple of the smaller parties. Fianna Fáil 'try their best' to form an alternative government, but reluctantly, and magnanimously, decide to support this minority government, "in the interests of the people and to avoid another election".
FF take their seats on the opposition benches, and become a simmering threat to every move the government wants to make, while at the same time making sure Sinn Féin don't accrue the benefits of being the main opposition party.
Then, in 18 months, or 2 years, when a populist subject like Irish Water, or USC, or Housing comes to boiling point (Irish Water, boom, boom) FF, as these new watchdogs, decide to pull the plug as they 'cannot support a government who would do such a terrible thing', and align themselves for purposes of grandstanding, with Sinn Fein, AAA etc.
They call a vote of confidence, the Government is defeated and falls. Back to the country, except this time as the party that 'nobley forfeited a chance at power for the good of the country, but couldn't stand by and watch this terribly punitive/unfair/buzz word of the day legislation go through, and believe that any government that proposed such a heinous act cannot be allowed to stand'. Sinn Féin's ground is challenged, Fine Gael are beaten up on a populist issue, any independents that supported it are undermined, and FF rides back into power as a majority partner in a slightly left of centre coalition, maybe with the Social Democrats, Labour or, more unlikely without leadership changes on both sides, Sinn Fein.

Thanks, I thought it was clever :) It would be pretty stupid for FF to go into coalition, or even to be the leader of a minority government, but I'm sure there are those advocating it. And I'm more suggesting the denouement of the arrangement, when they will pull the plug and what will happen then.

I think it is fairly obvious that Fianna Fail have no intention of going into power at the minute. How long do the talks have to go on for? If they haven't reached an agreement by the end of April, say? Continue talking all summer??
I don't think there's any limit to the time a caretaker Govt can operate as Bhunreacht??
Kenny and Martin will either have to come to some arrangement or else a new election if the talks don't produce around 65 votes for EK to form a minority administration.
Edit - Kenny/Martin either rang/texted each other, spoke/didn't speak today about meeting tomorrow/next Wednesday. Sounds like 1st April came a day earlier in FG/FF land :o

No limit constitutionally on how long a caretaker government can be in place. The only practical barrier is the need to pass a budget, which this year is in October.
The only other proviso in the constitution is that the President can refuse to dissolve the Dail on the advice of a Taoiseach who does not retain a majority support in the chamber - so in this case, if Enda Kenny wanted to dissolve after today's proceedings and the President thought not enough time or effort had been given to the formation of a government, he could refuse the request and the Taoiseach would have to go back to Leinster House, and presumably resume talks.
Otherwise though, there is nothing in the constitution that regulates this situation.

Easytiger I think is basically right. I think though the President can refuse to dissolve the Dail on his own bat, one of the few things he can do without being ordered to do so. I could be wrong though.
Yes, he can. They went through this on RTE Radio when the first vote on Taoiseach was taken.

Both FG and FF said SF "weren't fit for government" and both ruled out doing any deals with them. So what exactly is it that you want SF to be doing?
SF could have said that with the outcome of the Election they would listen to any approach from other parties.
As it us now they are being seen as cowardly fence sitters only interested in themselves.

Sensible Independents waiting for them to agree something.
Sinn Pain, loony left, Labour, SDP, Greens sitting on the ditch ready to throw stones.....
Can't wait for Fine Fail to emerge. It's about time they stopped pretending they have any real difference.
Must be a massive relief to you for the centre parties to get together to keep the liberal lefties out? Can you only imagine the mess those leftie loonies Sinn Fein would make of things if they got into power?
As opposed to the fantastic job Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have done when in power over the last century.
You don't live in the real world I take it.
But I thought anything was better than left wing socialist liberal policies?

In fairness both FF and FG have made it pretty clear they will not deal with SF, made it very very clear.
Hard to blame SF now for this (plenty other things can be thrown at them).
Think another election needed to "clear the air" and allow the major parties to strike an agreement between them
Honestly think FF did better than they thought and never expected to be in this position and have been caught on the hop. Likewise FG and their dismal showing.

SF will want one as they will blame FF for not forming a government and hope to get the protest vote that they missed last time.
FF might want one as they think they will overtake FG.
FG might want one if they think they can get a bounce from a new leader.
Independents shouldn't want one, but then I don't see much cop-on there either.

They made a valued contribution to the process of government formation it must be said. At least FF tried.
In fairness, Sinn Fein were told in no uncertain terms they weren't wanted. What would you have them do?
I'd be amazed if FF are happy to go to the country again. In fact I'd be amazed if anyone really wants to go again. Who would significantly change their tallies? Maybe the populace would be worried about the hmming and hawwing, and go towards FG for stability, but I doubt it. I'd say there'd only be a 3 or 4 seat swing max between FF and FG.

Well SF had been saying for some time that they wouldn't go in with FF or FG, and wouldn't serve as a junior partner in coalition, so they weren't exactly being accommodating to the others to begin with. All three parties ruled out sharing power with the other and that's remained the case now, but it seems nobody in the media is willing to demand of SF what they demand of the other two, they're getting off very light.

Bollocks, the barrage of SF posters, literature, the tour bus (neither FF or FG had one), and you're trying to claim that SF spent far less and that it was mainly voluntary work? Get off the cross FFS. FF and FG had their canvassers doing just the same as that, why do SF shrills always have to persist with self-aggrandisement?

Calm down petal I didn't say anywhere it was "mainly" anything. Simple facts are SF had the same amount of lit but they didn't always have to pay to get it out. Hire of a coach for a week was probably only a fraction of what FG shelled out on the Vaults for their campaign HQ and daily press conferences. SF doesn't employ any PR or external media consultants at €1k per day nor did they have to resort to FF practice in certain areas of paying canvassers and people to put up posters.

The bit in bold - considering there was never a chance of them winning more seats than FG or FF, it was clear to most that they never had any intention of being in government. Sure it's much easier to be in opposition. You can claim to have stuck to your election promises. And that's more important than delivering

If I am bitter it's with good reason - what did you do with your 90 years of "freedom" in one part of my country? After exploiting every natural resource you exported it's manhood to end up as drunks on the streets of London, locked women away to be abused in the laundries and handed the children over to be defiled and raped by animals. I'll take no patronising bollocks from any Free Stater and more power to the Shinners if they're reminding you at every turn what a complete and useless shower of fcukers you've been for 90 years.
Oh and don't be mistaking my use of "Free State" as referring to all southerners, it's reserved for that special kind of feckless, West Brit peasant that has spent the years living up to the Punch cartoon depiction of the Irish.

I wonder are there many "free staters" who frequent this board who vote Sinn Fein?
I know it can be difficult to find a good politician worth voting for, but hard to imagine many on here voting for the Shinners given the privilege we have of seeing what they're actually like.

I wouldn't have thought SF wouldn't be the party of choice for the Free Staters. They'd be much more at home with the establishment FF, FG and Labour. Though in saying that it is difficult to know how anyone gets to see "what they're actually like". FFS the south blindly accepted censorship for years and now like little lambs tamely accept one man controlling over half the media output of the entire state, with the (Free) "State" broadcaster RTE accounting for much of the rest.

Free State was abolished in 1937.
FF/FG/Lab got 101 seats, plus various centrist/Rightish Indos got another 15 or so.
Not much of a challenge to the "established order".
(And those 115 don't need baseball bats ;))
After yesterday, presume FF will put FG and Enda Kenny back in government for the moment and pull the trigger when it suits them. Either FG sticks with a weakened EK or tears itself up with a leadership struggle (old school big farmers etc with Coveney............... liberal wing with Varadkar............. with a compromise inter regnum candidate in the wings in Fitzgerald) . A real townie v culchie battle.
Either way I think FF will strike when it suits them and cause a new election in the next 12 months or so.

You mean TDs?

An expert on the IMF he may not be but I expect Gerry Adams has a better grasp of social economics than almost every TD from FG, FF or PD since the Celtic Tiger. The sort of economics that passes over the heads of pigs at the trough TDs and party leaders that has brought Ireland back to the brink of bankruptcy. TDs who lined their pockets and became rich through corruption while the similarly corrupt Taoiseachs did likewise. When the house of straw collapsed around them in 1998 few spoke out for the ordinary families who suffered because they milked the gravy train flat out for as long as they could. At least Adams experienced the type of social deprivation while bringing up his own family that still exists completely needlessly in the 26 because of greed by previous govts. Like SF or not but you can't say Adams or his team line their pockets unlike other parties.

The text in bold describes Enda. And it's more than economics he doesn't have a grasp on.
So Gerry hasn't got a holiday home in Donegal then? Or gets private medical treatment?
What have Sinn Féin ever done for ordinary people except try to cash in on discontent and anger?
Somehow I don't see Kenny or Martin being corrupt or living extravagant lifestyles.
An awful lot of FFrs and FGrs that I know haven't 2 Cents to rub together.

That's all grand but West Belfast is still a deprived shit-hole too. Says f**k all for his time as an MP/MLA for the area and likewise for SF's record. The only people enjoying any upswing by SF is their own "community workers".
You talk about social deprivation in the 26. Maybe try looking closer to home first. Can't see the wood for the trees and all that.

OTB
Are you really that naive ????
This is idiotic
In the W6 Sinn Fein have widespread support in the Nationalist community, but a healthy majority of their supporters would hate to be associated with them publicly in any way, hence the only time you hear about people's vote is in "safe" company after a shedload of pints.
A couple of reasons for this,
Firstly their recent history and being respobsible for the deaths of friends and neighbours
Secondly their continual appeasement to former "combatants" in the form of political jobs.
Thirdly Gerry Adams why doesnt he just retire.
The only reason that they have so much support is because they are seen as the best way of putting it up to "them uns"
Northern politics is really that simple
Southern Sinn Fein though are a different animal, their politicians are bright, articulate, media friendly and lack baggage, unfortunately for them Gerry thinks he an emperor and is continually loading baggage for them to carry, which the Southern political rivals point at every opportunity. Which is also idiotic because its nothing to do with their policies but it sounds great (or bad) for the media.
From the outside, Adams should retire, but then is he keeping a lid on things internally? TBH I doubt this very much I think its just ego keeping him going.
There's baggage with a few of their 26 Co crew ;)

Fixed that for you. We've had plenty of experience of their governments and how they've screwed the country over multiple times.
Or maybe you're just dumb enough to think they've done a wonderful job.

To be honest, that is extremely obvious. They will all trot out diligently to defend him no matter what he does.
Has any SF TD/MLA ever public publicly criticised him? Bad as FG/FF are, at least some of the members can break ranks and attack the leader without fear.

Id say SF would be more likely to split with Adams involved than without him. Some of the younger cohort are bound to be getting sick of having to constantly defend his history and baggage (not to mention his ridiculous twitter feed!). What factions are there within SF that Adams has to keep together?

The Slab Murphys of this world. Former militant republicans will side with Gerry whilst he sides with them. Such people would not be as drawn towards the democratic process without him and could drift towards the Replubican SF spectrum. I certainly couldn't see them siding with Mary-Lou.
With Mary-Lou or some other liberal-minded youngster at the helm the famed SF omerta about Gerry and Marty's activity during the troubles mightn't be as steadfast.

Muppet I am no shinner but have voted sf in the past because to be honest it became a headcount.
Why would they criticise a leader who has brought them from the fringes of irish politics to being the largest nationalist party in the north and the third biggest party in the south ?
If there was a united Ireland in the morning, they would be the biggest party.
What Adams has done is remarkable when you step back and look at it.
What happened in the north in my lifetime is nothing short of a miracle.
If wouldn't have happened without him.
The fact that he has managed to keep the vast majority of the Republican movement behind him without a significant "messy" split is really remarkable.

I can understand your point of view.
Someone mentioned Adams as being the reason the Slab Murphy's etc remained on board, and I can see that. However as a Southerner this can read differently. It is as if there is always a barely latent threat that if you refuse to accept Gerry, terrorism will escalate rapidly.

I would disagree with that. There isn't the will amongst the majority of former militants to re-arm except for those involved in the drugs war.
My point is that the SF/IRA omerta would be less steadfast in Adams absence.
Edit: I don't mean that as SF/IRA in the Jeffrey Donaldson sense but rather SF and the IRA and the crossover in membership.

The leader of Spain's main opposition Socialist party said this afternoon he believed new elections were inevitable after a surprise eleventh-hour coalition proposal failed and a deadline to form a government loomed.
"We are heading to new elections," Pedro Sanchez said after meeting King Felipe VI, who tasked him to form a government following inconclusive December elections, and telling him he had been unable to reach a coalition agreement.
Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had previously said he also lacked support to seek a parliamentary majority.
King Felipe now appears to have no other solution than dissolving the lower house and calling a new general election.
