Title: Round 4 Qualfier: Kildare v Monaghan
Post by: Dinny Breen on July 20, 2014, 05:40:08 PM
Interesting! Revenge for Monaghan? Venue? Can Monaghan recover mentally? Have Kildare momentum? So many questions!

Monaghan didn't do well today, for whatever reason. They are capable of improving, as evidenced by the first Armagh game and the second. I'd say they'll want to show that today is not their best shot and they'll be too good for Kildare.

Talk of a double header with Meath/Armagh in Croke Park, August 2nd.

It won't be a double header, Monaghan Kildare will be the header, with the Armagh Meath game on sometime shortly after lunch  :)

There's no revenge mission for Monaghan, somewhere in the distant past we were well beaten by Kildare after losing in the Ulster Final, no complaints, nothing to seek vengeance for, but no doubt we will be looking for a reverse result.
I just saw a bit of the Leinster sf, the bit where Kildare looked good in the 2nd half, other than that I haven't got a clue where they're at.

No!! Keep it the fup out of Croke Park, plus wtf should Kildare supporters have to pay double-header prices for a 3rd time. Surely Navan or Cavan would be a better choice!

Monaghan will go in as strong favourites but Kildare will have garnered a lot of belief from their two victories over Down and Clare. Clare were never going to be easy, that was a side that had won promotion, performed well against Kerry and had two championship wins so to win that coming from 6 points down will give this very young Kildare team a lot of confidence. The fact that we have finished all three championship games stronger also points to good squad dept and excellent conditioning. Monaghan are a physical team and have some nice footballers but coming out Ulster after 4 very physical games mightn't prepare them for the higher tempo less physical nature of the qualifiers, they will also be on an emotional downer so mentally will have to readjust targets, not always easy.

Kildare though based on reports were awful in the 1st half yesterday, our set-up was defensive, our match-ups were poor, conditions were muggy but not sure if that excuses the lethargy in some of the players. However I'm not sure through design or desperation we seem to be finding our form 15 and it looks we will have our form XV starting against Monaghan. We haven't had a bad championship, 3 wins is a good return and in hind-sight while a Leinster final would have been nice, a mauling from Dublin would have done nothing for our development and probably would have done a lot of harm. Instead we have a realistic goal of a quarter-final place and then a free shot.

Looking forward to this game and give us more than a punchers chance.

Kildare and Monaghan could be in Navan and Armagh v Meath in Cavan, I suppose.

In fairness, we didn't play too many over the years.

I doubt anyone with vertigo will have to worry about their tickets for this game.

Saturday, August 2
Meath v Armagh, Croke Park, 5pm
Kildare v Monaghan, Croke Park, 7pm
Both games will be live on Sky Sports 3, which means there will probably be more inside Croke Park, than watching it on tv.

If Monaghan win, they will play Dublin in the last 8.
if Kildare win, it depends.

Pity this isn't in Navan. There would have been a great atmosphere for it. Croke Park 2/3s empty does nothing for a championship match.

Kildare were neither attacking or defensive against Clare. No real guile up front but the lads who came in helped no end in that sense. The forwards need to step up again if they want to beat Monaghan.
I'd argue that both big man at full forward options should be left on the bench and we go for movement inside with Smith, brophy and mulhall.
Despite having no real threat up front at times the defensive unit was porous against Clare so McManus and Hughes will make hay unless that is sorted. This is not so much a dig at the lads playing 1-6 but those out the field who are not putting pressure on the ball.

Mulhall has been in good form with Athy. He kicked 5 points against Naas on Sunday. Him and Smith together with Brophy dropping deeper is something I would like to see.

Well one local journalist tweeted Mulhall had 1-3 inside 25 mins. That inside line can get their own ball and leave the Monaghan boys guessing. If Kildare play OConnor the Farney lads are being handed the play book.

Good to hear that the lads are tuned in to the next game. The longer break after the Ulster final is welcome.

Monaghan have to focus on the big one now, one game at a time. Don't know much about Kildare either. Glad to see John Doyle has hung up the boots. Surprising that Louth turned them over early on, but they've got good momentum now and it should be a good game. Apart from the defeat to Tyrone last year, this squad have shown they like playing in Croker.

And it's good it's non-Ulster opposition.

You don't know much about Kildare alright  :o, they hammered Louth and then got hammered for 45-50 minutes by meath before coming back and getting closeish to winning.

I saw Kildare beat mayo in the first league game and they looked good but it's been mixed at best since then although if they'd held on against Tyrone they'd have stayed up. I'd be surprised if Monaghan don't win this by 3-4

Here's a go at a team for Kildare;

Rory Beggan
Kieran Duffy
Drew Wylie
Colin Walshe
Dessie Mone
Vinny Corey
Karl O'Connell
Darren Hughes
Kieran Hughes
Paul Finlay
Stephen Gollogly
Eoin Duffy
Dermot Malone
Chris McGuinness
Conor McManus

I would set up as follows (assuming Kildare play two inside forwards like everyone else – I don't know if they do or not);

                             Rory Beggan
                   Drew Wylie    Colin Walshe
                            Kieran Duffy
Dessie Mone       Vinny Corey       Karl O'Connell
Kieran Hughes     Darren Hughes     Dermot Malone
Paul Finlay     Stephen Gollogly     Eoin Duffy
         Chris McGuinness     Conor McManus

I think Ryan Wylie is still a bit too light for this level. Kieran Duffy has been unlucky to lose his place imo; he hasn't done a lot wrong and provides more of a physical presence covering the full-back line.
I'd give Karl O'Connell a go at wing back. He has done well when coming off the bench and his pace offers a considerable attacking threat from wing back.
Dermot Malone gets the freedom of the field to win the dirty ball.
Dick did super work against Tyrone and Armagh but he found the going tough against Donegal. We can't afford to get cleaned out at midfield again so I think the time has come to bring Kieran Hughes out the field for his aerial presence and ball winning ability. He'll be missed in the full forward line but needs must.
This frees up a spot in the full forward line for Chris McGuinness who I think deserves a starting role after his last two contributions as a substitute. He's a dangerous inside forward and his goal against Donegal was a top class finish.
Lastly I'd give Eoin Duffy a go at 12. He may be a bit rusty after his lay-off but if he was fit enough to come on against Donegal he's fit enough to start imo. He also offers a scoring threat in the half forward line which has been severely lacking and hopefully he can repeat the MOTM performance of his last visit to Croke Park.
Overall I think we're solid enough at the back so starting O'Connell, Eoin Duffy and McGuinness should make us more potent up front.

There's the team that'll beat Kildare!

I don't know enough about Eoin Duffy's current form to say if he should be included in the starting 15.

Fintan Kelly deserves to start. He's been playing well, apart from one below average game against Armagh, compared to the previous against Tyrone. In the final he made that hard run to get into position for what should have been a penalty. If he'd got the pass earlier who knows.

Understandably you have Kieran Hughes in midfield. This is where we will most likely be up against it. I'm afraid to ask...how's Eoin Lennon?
Title: Re: Round 4 Qualfier: Kildare v Monaghan

I've been told that Eoin Lennon will be out until the end of August.

And even if we are still in the Championship at the end of August he won't be match fit as he will have very little training done so I'd say we can write him off for the season.

I said as soon as I saw him limp off in the league final that I was afraid that that could be the last we see of Eoin Lennon in a Monaghan jersey and I still fear that to be the case.

Yeah Eoin Duffy is a gamble, but my thinking on this type of situation is that if a player is on the fringe of the team then it's better to start him and take him off if it's not working out rather than bring him on, which heaps more pressure on him to deliver as you're probably bringing him on because things aren't going well and you've given him the role of being the game changer.

I used to think the same with Ciaran Hanratty. I used to prefer him starting as at least if the thing went tits up for him he could always be replaced. When he was brought on I always felt that he felt a greater pressure of having to deliver and that his performances were more erratic and error strewn as a result.

There are questions about Duffy's match fitness alright but if he starts and produces another performance like that against Meath in the league final last year then happy days. If he doesn't then take him off and put on Paudie McKenna or move Kieran Hughes to the half forwards and put on Gavin Doogan. No big harm done. If you bring him on then you're banking on him to deliver which is a greater gamble imo.

Don't disagree CL with your rationale but can't see there being too many changes TBH. To me an over-arching attribute of MOR is his trust in the team; as evidenced by the fact he played the same team in the Armagh replay as the drawn game. I can't see him chopping and changing too much.

I think it would be slightly unfair on Kelly to not get the start as he has been consistent all year, bar the last 2 games.

I'd definitely have McGuinness on from the start, and even in the half forward line (where score generation is needed), as he is an instinctive scoring forward i.e. get the ball and head for the sticks..

I don't think we'll need to be as ultra defensive in this one as in the Ulster games so his type is more suitable to this game IMHO. I've seen Kildare play Down; they're very athletic and pacy but Down were v.poor (apart from 10 mins at the start of the second half when they kicked 5 without reply) that day. Monaghan certainly won't give them the time and space on the ball that they got against Down..

That's why I'd have McGuinness in the full forward line.

When he gets the ball, beats a man and heads for goal he might as well be through on goal as having to face another line of defence.

Sure, my preference would be the FF line too but I was thinking about the minimal return we get from our HF line when writing the post. Jury's out on Eoin Duffy but he may be the better option than Donaghy who was really lived up to his 2013 USFC final IMO!

A fully fit Eoin Duffy is the man, if he's anywhere near full fitness. I'd use him, much like CL was thinking. He'd suit the more orthodox way non-Ulster teams set themselves up defensively moreso than the likes of Donaghy.

Doogan should expect a good run out in this one. Midfield are going to have to go into this one at full pelt, which will mean he should get close to 30 minutes. I'd be confident that Darren and Dick will hold their own. As soon as either flags, positional switches or substitutions have to be made. This took too long last Sunday.

Such a pity about Lennon. It would sort out so many issues if he was in there, but that's life when you're drawing from a small pool.

Was Kildare the last non-Ulster team we played championship in Croker? Kerry before that.

Ye can tell that the Kildare boys fancy their chances, as do we. I'm hopeful of a bit of a cracker.

They understandably don't want to meet the Dubs and are hopeful of an alternative. We know we can only face them, if we come out on top. That focus will stand to us, while they fret over the chances of getting another roasting. Maybe we'll get roasted...but somehow I doubt it.

Monaghan haven't had it easy up to now, but there's a lot more left in the tank.

The monaghan blanket was ticking nicely until the Ulster final and fully expect it to get back to optimum levels here.
I'd have questions about whether Kildare can improve a leaky defense in just two weeks.
At times they're as good as any going forward but it's tough to rack up scores against Monaghan.

I'll  have be put my money on the ulster team for this one.

Jaysus I wouldn't say Kildare are even close to being as good as any going forward. There isn't enough spark up front but to be fair the team are missing Broohy and Mulhall recently who are quality players.
Just from the Farney folk here, is it just my notion it would ye love to see Tomas O'Connor on the edge if the square? Or Podge Fogarty type who is the big man type.
I just feel they would be eaten up by Wylie and co?

The big surprise in the Monaghan team line out for the ulster final was that it lined out as sent to the media. A bit of a rare occurrence for Monaghan under Malachy O'Rourke. I'd be surprised that'll be the starting 15 against Kildare.

Apparently Malone has a broken thumb. I think I read MOR quoted on that somewhere earlier in the week. So yes, it's unlikely to be that.

Kildare lads; I see Tomas O'Connor being drafted in to the FF line. Is this for his aerial threat against the tack tight Drew Wylie? Mind you, Fogarty was a right handful for the Down FB.. Also, why is Emmet Bolton not starting, I thought he was particularly effective in the link up play against Down?

Bolton's form has been very patchy over the last few years. As for Tom Connor, I expect Paddy Brophy could well start ahead of him. He seems to have a greater impact on games when introduced as a substitute.

Sure, it's all soft for McManus, when clean through on goal clattered late by 2 players  who hadn't a prayer of a chance of challenging  for the ball and no  yellow/black card, not a dickey bird.

If the ref gave a black for the foul on Mc Manus he'd be shot. All Kildare have to do is give the ball to Alan Smith and to a lesser extent Paddy Brophy,Smith looks in the mood to do serious harm.

Why ? It was a cynical foul on a goal scoring chance and ref fudged it. Its become a farce the black card now.

Draws in Qualifiers cause the AIQF to be put back a week, it happened in 2011.

Naturally delighted with the win and the intense  performance from the 2nd half onwards but Kildare should have been out of sight before half time. I know we won, but half of it was Kildare losing it.
If we bring the intensity of the 2nd half  to the 1/4 final we might give Dublin a game but unfortunately we are lacking consistency.

I was shouting at the screen. Vinny take your point ....  take the point...  take the poi....... GREAT GOAL. That was a game changer and  gave focus to the recovery.

Delighted with that, the lads showed great heart after a poor start. Before tonight we'd only conceded one championship goal since O'Rourke took over, so to concede two so early was a shock to the system, especially as our game is built on defensive effort and keeping the opposition to a low score.

Vinny's goal was a special score, and one we really needed. Hard luck to Kildare, it's a cliche but after a game like that it's a shame someone had to lose. They persevered until the very end, their lack of a reliable free-taker didn't help them though.

When it went to extra time the game was there for whoever wanted it, and our desire was encouraging. Some great moments in ET, like McCarron's point just after he came on, K Hughes's pass for the goal, great blocks by the 2 Hughes's at the end when Kildare were probing.

Next week will be extremely difficult, especially with the tired bodies after tonight. But we've nothing to lose in reality, not one will be giving us a chance. It's a great opportunity for our lads to go out and test themselves against the very best in a big championship game.

Possibly some of the Kildare players were fear struck by the sight of O'Gara in the Hogan Stand, sharpening his teeth with a metal file.

We'll see who quick with the wise cracks when he's carving your defence open next week.

No doubt O'Gara can play good football as well :)
Whereas Kildare would be fearful of getting pasted by the Dubs, we are are (foolishly) looking forward to the match.
We haven't played Dublin in a championship game, at least not that I can remember,  only ponced about in league games.
I suppose The Dublin  board will allow us to have a few tickets for the Monaghan support?

Should be, Kildare have been one if not the most consistent teams over the last 6-8 years and that was a top performance today. Unlucky again just.

Canavan's emphatic  final word on the matter on the Sky pundit panel, an off the cuff remark that Monaghan have no chance, mainly because of the energy sapping 90 minutes against Kildare in those conditions.
6 or 7 days is short for a team to recover from a provincial final defeat, but is it too short to recover from a hard fought victory?
I have no real idea about that, but I suspect the matter will first be decided by ability, before stamina would  come to  play a part.

I would disagree on that. Problem with fatigue is you don't know until the ball is thrown in where you're at.

Can only speak from my experience of playing 2-3 games over the course of a week.

Adrenalin will get you to certain point. But you tend to hit the wall after 55 minutes regardless of talent

The Monaghan lads were constantly running into tackles and then throwing themselves forwards with both hands outstretched which every time led to a very soft free. The ref was eating out of their hands.

Very entertaining evening and great to get the win. Plenty i f mistakes all over the field, but given the conditions that's probably to be expected.

McManus again showed that he's a great player, double-marked and still getting out first to the ball. The two goals were obvious highlights. Great to see Corey getting forward for a cracker and McGuinness showed that he's worth his starting place. Great stop by Beggan in extra time too.

Hard luck to Kildare. It was one of those games that could have gone either way. Our getting the second goal when we did was the difference.

Great win for Monaghan. I thought they looked dead on their feet at the end of normal time and just about hung on for the draw. They really pushed on in extra time and fully deserved their win. Do Kildare not have any left footed free takers? They squandered two free kick chances in the second half of normal time that probably would have won them the game.

Monaghan were very slow to get started. Two goals by Kildare in the first half suggests a hole in the blanket and does not bode well against Dublin. Monaghan did better later on, but against Dublin they won't have the luxury of waiting 40 minutes to get going.

I don't know if it's a tactic or not but it does seem to happen regularly with 2 out of 3 of the full back line. Refs don't buy it all the time all the same.

Congrats to Monaghan. Very proud of our lads, after the Meath debacle all I really wanted was some fight and guts and we got that in spades.

Very entertaining game but at a level far below where Dublin operate. I think the quarter-final will be a massacre, unfortunately.

Expectations for this summer were quite low and apart from the first 50 minutes against Meath I think Kildare acquitted themselves reasonably well this campaign.

No complaints last night. We just can't seem to catch a break in a big game in Croke Park. Good luck to Monaghan next week.

Entertaining game and Kildare seem to finally be finding their feet after a wavering first season under Ryan. The Meath game was too soon for them. There is talent there and the best 15 and their positioning still to be determined.
I have to comment on some of the defending and defenders.
Lyons for Kildare and wylie and walshe for Monaghan should have been black carded in the first half.
Not sure if this is the norm for Lyons - but his county colleague Peter Kelly when fit and both these Monaghan players deserve the black card ( for yellow cards for persistent holding and fouling) inside the first 15 mins of every game I see them play in. Dessie mone sometimes too when he isn't diving and looking for a Hollywood contract.
The thing is that these players are excellent and don't need to do this. It's fecking annoying to watch.
A more stringent ref would correctly devastate Monaghan!

Monaghan slightly disappointing last night - they are capable of much more and will need it against Dublin - but they will be fearless and relish the challenge

Kildare showed they have talent and hope they continue to progress under Ryan next season. Some wonderful players - some not started that should have been IMO !

Ref didn't bate ye in my view. Some frees were questionable on both sides but Kildare coughed the ball up too easily and not having a left footed free taker hurt you as well.

If the ref was doing his job then Bolton would have got either a black or a yellow in the first half for his professional foul. Amazing leniency there. If it was a yellow and not a black (which is what I think it should have been) then Kildare would have been down to 14 in the 2nd half when he did get his black

If you want to talk soft frees look at one of the ones that Kildare got near then end on the cusack stand side. They missed it but that's hardly the refs fault.

Overall the better team one but I doubt that the dubs are losing sleep

Oh will you stop Kildare had the game won and Coldrick rescued it for Monaghan with a joke of a decision. He gave soft after soft free in the 1st half to keep Monghan in it also and Mc Manus spent spent more time diving on the ground than on his feet.

If neither of the TWO defenders on McManus are able to get out in front or win the ball cleanly when it is kicked in, then it's clearly the fault of the ref and not the defenders.

Decent game given the conditions.
I thought they robots were going to push on and win in extra time as they were just starting to kick decent points, but you'd have to admire Monaghan's doggedness.

Bolton's black card felt like a key moment as Kildare lost their way for about 10 minutes after and were nearly 5 points down when Monaghan missed the goal chance. Only a few minutes earlier Kildare nearly went 7 points up with a similar chance.

Both defences looked ill at ease in the conditions and were a little quick to foul when the pressure was on. I don't think the ref was a swing factor. He missed a few fouls as well as blowing harshly for others.
It's set up perfectly for Monaghan against Dublin.

No it's the refs fault for giving a nonsense decision so Monaghan could get the draw and of course it's not his fault McManus got to the ball 1st but you can't just give a free for nothing because the forward gets the ball 1st that's just nonsense

Oh will you stop Kildare had the game won and Coldrick rescued it for Monaghan with a joke of a decision. He gave soft after soft free in the 1st half to keep Monghan in it also and Mc Manus spent spent more time diving on the ground than on his feet.

Listen - it was a foul. Soft or not. However the one against Wylie wasn't as there was absolutely no contact. You got your gift and then missed it. Get over it.

It was never a foul FFS!

The amount of turnovers we conceded in the 1st half of extra time was unreal and it cost us but it should never of got that far Coldrick is an absolute disgrace rode us from start to finish kept Monaghan in the game by himself the free at the end was a disgusting decision all you can ask for is fairness and Kildare didn't get that last night

If the ref was doing his job then Bolton would have got either a black or a yellow in the first half for his professional foul. Amazing leniency there. If it was a yellow and not a black (which is what I think it should have been) then Kildare would have been down to 14 in the 2nd half when he did get his black

We'll just have to agree to differ then. IMO over the course of the game Kildare got more than their fair share of decisions, they should have been down to 14 early in the 2nd half and in the end the better team won

We will and in fairness to Monaghan they punished us in the 1st half of extra time punished our mistakes an won the game from there they forced a good few turnovers and that's what cost us but it's just hard to take with Colrick as it's not the 1st time he's rode and I can't help but think it's because he's from a part of Meath very close to Kildare

If neither of the TWO defenders on McManus are able to get out in front or win the ball cleanly when it is kicked in, then it's clearly the fault of the ref and not the defenders.

No it's the refs fault for giving a nonsense decision so Monaghan could get the draw and of course it's not his fault McManus got to the ball 1st but you can't just give a free for nothing because the forward gets the ball 1st that's just nonsense
The frees weren't given for nothing. You might call them soft, maybe some of them were. I was at the game and wasn't close to the action where the last free in normal time was given, so can't comment on that one specifically. But if two defenders can't cleanly win the ball against one forward, then there's no point in crying about the ref. It's clear that some 'soft' frees were awarded both ways - that will always be the way. Equally, the referee will fail to take action where he should - like when McGuinness was fouled going through on goal.

maybe soft put there was a push on McManus at the end and it was a free, i thought originally the ref was taking the easy way out and play for extra time but replay showed it to be a foul

Coldrick was good in the Down game, Monaghan like most Ulster teams are better tacklers than most, our defensive discipline in close quarters has been poor this year and definitely a work on for next year. It was a soft free but the referee is low down on the list of reasons why we lost.

We lost it in the 1st half of extra time with many sloppy turnovers and awful defending for the goal but its hard to take when a free like that is given and there is no way in hell he'd of given that up the other end but in saying that I wish Monaghan all the best in the next round and hopefully they will play like they did in the 2nd half and in 1st half extra time rather than how they played in the 1st half or they'll be in big trouble the next day

Yeah it looked a soft enough call at the time (haven't seen a replay of it) but we have to learn how to play a referee. Most referees will blow for the foul in that situation when the attacking team are only a point down in injury time. We did the exact same thing down in Ennis and Clare kicked the free wide.

The double marking has to be one of the  most negative tactic going, combine that with the sweeper system, it would appear Kildare were trying to ape the most cynical of what Donegal did to Monaghan in the Ulster final,  but McManus was able to deal with it better in this game, getting out in front of tweedledum and tweedledee, time and time again, when he could catch the ball he did  and when he was given a hefty shunt from two players he went down, it was a free. One effective  difference in the attack  for Monaghan was that they had McGuinness starting,
Strange that Meath folded so easily against Armagh in the earlier game, Kildare who had folded so easily against Meath in the Leinster sf,  decided to wake up  in time for Monaghan, who had handled Armagh easily enough in the Ulster semi final replay.

GMF was right before the match, identifying Bolton as one to watch. His rash pull-down to earn the black was a significant moment.

Frustration with the ref was felt by both sides, but given the conditions he was always going to get some wrong. He's certainly a better ref than Cormac Reilly, who had another howler today. No way was Coldrick the main factor in Kildare losing. They lost mainly because they didn't have a left footed free taker. Overall they handled the conditions better than us, with a lot less fumbles.

K Hughes, had a good game, but he'd want to cut out the impetuous stuff. Very impressed with Jack McCarron and McGuinness who showed great form. We'll really need them to be firing on all cylinders next week.

Bolton did get around the pitch. He was the player who accidentally  ran full force into the back of McGuinness, who also just happened to be clean through on goal. What a coincidence! I mean what are the chances of that happening?
I suspect Coldrick had that in mind when he black carded Bolton for the impetuous drag down.

I only saw the highlights as I had my fill of football after watching our game but I was hugely impressed with Smith.
I think he's the 'go-to' forward that you need if he can fulfill his potential.
Also, Boltons first goal was a cracker.
It's funny how things pan out, ultimately you've a lot more reasons to be optimistic for next year than we do.
