Why?

Football heads are stupid. Hurling will bring then young lads on something shocking. A different set of skills but ties into football.

Look at the amount of duel clubs who are going well and it's only helping them.

could not disagree more with this, the level of laziness that hurling brings to youth football is unbearable.
It might bring slightly more short distance speed but absolutely no endurance running.
What a bizarre post. Not the first and most certainly not the last
Yes but in fairness the majority of your comments on here are just that some ones opinion is wrong or just "tripe" while offering nothing in return.

Tell me why its bizarre, tell us your experience of why its different.

Mine is hurling doesn't benefit football, completely different skill set. People watch 4 top hurling games a year and rave about the speed.

Realistically, Slaughtneil and maybe Dungiven every club in Derry is operating at Junior level, and even at that probably wouldn't win Ulster junior club title.
Bar couple handy individuals show me the dual club success stories outside of Slaughtneil.

1. The club in Dungiven is called Kevin Lynch's. Would be helpful to call them by their proper name. As an aside, the other club you mentioned is called Sleacht Néill not Slaughtneil.

2. The general consensus is for children to play as many sports as possible - get a full range of skills via multiple sports. Every coach educator promotes this theory worldwide.

Well, apart from you.

3. A recent list of duel senior club teams who have tasted success in the past:

Kilmacud Crokes, Dublin
Naas, Kildare
Sleacht Néill
Loughmore-Castleiney, Tipperary
St. Eunan's, Letterkenny
Na Fianna, Dublin
Cratloe, Clare
Ballyboden St. Enda's, Dublin
St. Finbarrs, Cork
Éire Óg, Ennis

Just a few examples.

Quote from: GAACLG1884 on August 21, 2026, 01:57:37 PMThere are major GAA areas in Derry with no hurling. Mainly Maghera, Magherafelt, and the loughshore (St Finbars will hopefully make inroads to an extent) people within clubs Glen, magherafelt, Ballinderry, Newbridge etc what are your views on starting hurling has it ever been discussed within the club? Do you honestly think it would hinder football progress. In my opinion having three more hurling clubs in the right areas would establish Derry as a mid level Joe McDonagh team at the minimum.

Good points raised GAACLG1884.

I think, in my opinion, a simple point would be if a club has an underage camogie team already, then it should be a no-brainer to introduce underage hurling.

You said hurling brings "laziness" to youth football, a totally baseless swipe at hurling & then you made up something about hurling bringing short distance speed but no endurance running lol.
I have been involved in the S&C world for over 20 years so I would love to know where you come up with these hilarious comments
I don't base what I say on stats and opinions that I read somewhere, I base it on what I see. Kids that play hurling at low standard run alot less that kids of the same age that play football alot of the time at a higher standard. Football skills haven't improved because of hurling

The vast majority in Ulster teams play at a low level, take 3 or 4 Antrim clubs + Slaughtneil and Portaferry out of that and include the rest.
This notion that hurling is a lightning quick game is solely based on 4 or 5 Munster Championship games a season.

Don't try and argue that children playing low level hurling in Derry are better footballers because of it, absolute rubbish talk.

You stated "football heads are stupid"  and you come back accusing me of sweeping statements.lol.

I have no gripe with hurling, if thats your thing push on, but Ulster hurling people need to get chip of their shoulder with Ulster Football about developing the game and building it.

Football people are busy enough trying to improve their own game without having to do hurling people's job for them.

As for your strange S&C comment, whats the relevance? Is there a GAA hotspot somewhere else where the data is available to prove opinions as facts?

Read that back to yourself.  :o

An anti-hurling rant from someone who just doesn't get it.

I'm of the opinion that they both work well together. I don't favour one over the other. They both have their place.

Ryan O

I'm anti hurling, anti kids playing sport and someone even went to the effort of correcting the club name spelling as a way of providing superior knowledge. I think safe to say we'll park this.

Heading towards the business end of hurling championship, I'll leave you all to enjoy the competitiveness of it.

Yes, ACL I heard. Realistically 12 months out. Sorry to hear it for the lad.

Not just the ACL, heard it's that and more damage with the knee. Nightmare for him. Seems to be a serious spike in knee injuries this year

So senior hurling final between Sleacht Néill and Kevin Lynch's in a few weeks.

Banagher didn't put up much resistance yesterday. Unfortunately for the neutral, it was over after ten minutes.

Draw for intermediate and junior semi-finals now between Swatragh and Lavey and Ballinascreen and Banagher. Two even enough games there you'd think. But all of them are a level below the two senior finalists.

Hurling structure very poor. No benefit to any of the teams. Huge own goal by the county board. Not sure who was behind that plan in Owenbeg but clearly needed changed back to the group stages next year. Nobody knows why it was changed.

Football now next week-end. Some good match ups and usually there's one shock on the cards. Which one will it be? Team will be hoping to get the win and come through injury free.

I wouldnt say swatragh are a level below lynchs. They always seem to give them a good game and have even taken them down a few times in the last few years.

And can someone tell me whats so bad about the structure? It looks fine to me. Our best team goes into ulster senior, 3rd best goes into intermediate and 5th into junior. Theres clearly a huge gap between the top 6 and the bottom 2 and the bottom 2 go home after their 2 losses.

But when was last time they've got to final for example. Must be over 10 years ago. It's been a while since KL's won championship, considering their history. But they seem to be well focused this year.

Regarding your second point, from reading reports (player and manager) and talking to people, nobody likes it and they're less games. That's not good for hurling in the county. Two teams are already gone and we're just past mid August. I just think with less teams in hurling, then another couple of games would develop players more.

Waterford SHC semi-finals were today and the final is next weekend. Not sure why we need to be different.

In Waterford, the football championship only starts when the hurling one is over. I think hurling final in next week.

Derry has a bit more time.

outsiderlookingin

A few more serious injuries over the weekend,on the plus side there was Ref conference over the weekend, hopefully the refs learned from it and the games at weekend are not all about them

People say the young ones need to get the big games to keep them at it well there's a couple of the young refs got big games this weekend, usually an insight into who will get the final to
