Quote from: zapped on August 18, 2026, 10:32:17 PMFancy slaughtneil for the double this year, change in hurling SHC will help them give a push to the football. League champions and all Ireland winning manager in place, will be team to beat

Not seeing this, Slaughtneil haven't made a final since 2022 and I dont think their younger players match the younger players that Newbridge or Magherafelt have brought through in the past 4 years.

Similar to Glen a number of their older players are coming to the end of the road, appreciate they want one last dance but the new game makes it even harder on older legs.

An all Ireland winning manager will improve things now doubt but given the age profile of Newbridge and Magherafelt I expect both of those teams to be even better this year. And to be fair both have very strong management teams as well.

A bridge too far for Slaughtneil in the football is my view.

Why?

Football heads are stupid. Hurling will bring then young lads on something shocking. A different set of skills but ties into football.

Look at the amount of duel clubs who are going well and it's only helping them.

could not disagree more with this, the level of laziness that hurling brings to youth football is unbearable.
It might bring slightly more short distance speed but absolutely no endurance running.

Theres no here we go, you made a sweeping statement about footballers in a predominantly football county who very recently was home to All Ireland club champions.

Meanwhile our hurling, which has improved in comparison to our own previous standards is very very poor.Yes we'll hear all the arguments about lack of clubs, players support and all the shite of the day but the fact is that if more kids enjoyed it, more would play it.
The bigger discussion is that has hurling ever been in a worse place, nationally?

What a bizarre post. Not the first and most certainly not the last

Brendan

Seems like players and managers are just lining up to criticise the Hurling championship format, seen 3 articles on it now, more than theres been about the actual matches, suits noone and shows where the county boards priorities are

With only 8 clubs (with a huge gulf in quality & 6 qualifying for a final) what format is the best one?

Yes but in fairness the majority of your comments on here are just that some ones opinion is wrong or just "tripe" while offering nothing in return.

Tell me why its bizarre, tell us your experience of why its different.

Mine is hurling doesn't benefit football, completely different skill set. People watch 4 top hurling games a year and rave about the speed.

Realistically, Slaughtneil and maybe Dungiven every club in Derry is operating at Junior level, and even at that probably wouldn't win Ulster junior club title.
Bar couple handy individuals show me the dual club success stories outside of Slaughtneil.

That seems to be the consensus Brendan. Less matches will improve hurling in the county. Strange decision.

Be interesting to find out who in the county board was behind it - or more importantly, why?

Whatever, it's a very poor decision but would there not have been a vote or debate about it you'd think? Anybody know?

The group format worked well I thought. It gave clubs at least 4 games as well as the opportunity to blood a few new players. Ideal situation for clubs.

Hopefully clubs will review it when the season is over and ask the county board to go back to the group format.

But interesting, as I mentioned, to find out who suggested it and why? Very good chance Na Magha and Eoghan Rua's season is over in mid August. Not great when you're trying to develop hurling in my opinion.

Strange post indeed DM. Moreso a rant.

Imagine trying to introduce underage hurling to his club.

JE23

I think the biggest issue is trying to fit the hurling games in for a county that is predominantly focused on football, so creates a lot of issues for the dual clubs.

For example with my club (Swatragh) our minors have had 4 weeks in a row with minor hurling championship games on a Friday, and football championship games on a Monday. Which obviously makes it extremely difficult for the dual clubs to prepare for either championship. If dual is going to work in Derry, this cannot be the model as it will either burn players out or push them away from one of the sports.

We've got a similar problem at senior level in that the focus over the past couple of weeks has been on hurling with us playing Kevin Lynchs tonight, then we play Steelstown next Saturday in the football championship. Effectively giving us one week's proper preparation for the football championship, whereas Steelstown have had a few weeks of clear preparation for football only - which obviously gives them a huge advantage over us.

Agree with Ryan O that Slaughtneil are only our real success story out of the dual clubs, but that could definitely change if we didn't have as much overlap during the two championships. Current structures at underage and senior definitely hamper the dual clubs. I would also argue that if there was more separation in the championships Slaughtneil would have won more recent football championships.

Every Derry club have won Ulster junior whenever they have played it, bar na magha. Pretty sure eoghan Rua and ballinascreen have got to All Ireland Junior finals.

Realistically Eoghan Rua and Na Magha should play for the junior championship, Slaughtneil should just be in the senior, and then the rest compete for either qualifying for senior or intermediate championships.

Brendan

Lavey didn't win it last year, list the final to the 3rd best team in Donegal so may forget abiut sending our genuine Junior clubs into Ulster when the rest of the province is at that type of thing

You said hurling brings "laziness" to youth football, a totally baseless swipe at hurling & then you made up something about hurling bringing short distance speed but no endurance running lol.
I have been involved in the S&C world for over 20 years so I would love to know where you come up with these hilarious comments
