Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has warned this season's UEFA Champions League hopefuls to beware the emerging threat from Russia's top clubs.

United - along with Celtic, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea - will learn their group stage opponents on Thursday when the finest clubs on the continent gather for the draw in Monaco.

Although AC Milan are absent, Bayern Munich return. And with Juventus leading a four-strong Italian challenge and Barcelona and Real Madrid taking up their customary places from Spain, familiar opposition seems guaranteed at some stage of the competition for the English quartet.

However, all four could also face Uefa Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg, who square up to the Red Devils in Super Cup combat on Friday night.

And having seen them dispose of Rangers at the City of Manchester Stadium last season, Fletcher feels there is more to come from Dick Advocaat's side.

"Zenit St Petersburg will fancy themselves to do really well in the Champions League this season," said Fletcher.

"They beat some top teams in the Uefa Cup last season so they are no mugs.

"There is also a lot of money in the Russian game. There are plenty of Brazilian players over there and people generally don't realise how strong a league it is.

"A lot of teams struggle when they go out to Russia, so that gives them a big advantage as well."

Ferguson cools Berbatov rumours

Berbatov is believed to have handed in a transfer request
Dimitar Berbatov's hopes of a move to Manchester United look to be fading after Sir Alex Ferguson said he was "less optimistic" about new signings.

The United boss, who had a £20.5m bid for the striker rejected, was uncertain whether he would boost his squad before the transfer window shuts on Monday.

"I'm less optimistic so we'll carry on," Ferguson said.

"I've no idea what's going on. It's very hard to get communication with some people in life."

Berbatov has made no secret of his desire to leave White Hart Lane but Tottenham are determined that their £30m price-tag will be met.

United are unlikely to be pushed into paying over the odds and Ferguson may be prepared to miss out on Berbatov.

With just four days until the transfer deadline expires, Berbatov's future at Tottenham remains uncertain.

Spurs manager Juande Ramos left the 27-year-old out of his squad for Saturday's defeat by Sunderland, claiming the player was not focused enough.

After the game, first-team coach Gus Poyet admitted the club had no idea if Berbatov would still be a Spurs player come the end of the transfer window.

He added that the club was "going to try hard to get a couple of replacements" before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

Asked if that meant Berbatov was on his way out, Poyet shrugged and said: "What can I say? I think the best thing is to wait to 1 September.

"There is nothing to hide. We talked to him the other day and he was not in the right condition to play - I think you say in England, 'not in the right frame of mind'.

Berbatov's Dimitar Berbatov's agent Emil Danchev is believed to be in London to hold crisis talks with Tottenham.

It is understood that Danchev hopes to meet boss Juande Ramos and chairman Daniel Levy in a bid to thrash out the striker's future.

At last some good news, Everton have agreed a deal for HAHA, (subject to medical . :'()

The medical could prove to be a problem with Louis
Any word of a fee?
Fergie must have someone about to sign, be it Berba or not - doubtful if he would let Louis go if he didnt have a replacement of sorts.
BTW I see Helsingborg have said they will let Larsson go if they receive a decent offer.
Would he be any good as a back-up or an impact sub?

Shrewdness

Disappointing and flat performance from United last night. They didn't wake up until they were 2-0 down, and can have no complaints.

I thought Rooney's first half performance was unworthy of a Manchester United player. A scowling attitude and looked downright lazy and uninterested throughout the first half. He must surely be the most over rated player lacing boots at the moment.

The best thing that could happen is to sign Berbatov, and give Rooney a spell on the bench.

This crap form from him has continued from the end of last season and his poor performance in Moscow. At the moment, he is contributing nothing for club or country.

Can't believe Scholes' stupidity in handballing when he knew he was already on a yellow card.

As age gets a grip on him, i think the first part of his game that has deserted him is his knack of goalscoring.
Even though he scored that cracker against Barcelona last season, it was one of only 2 goals that he scored last season from an overall total of 34 appearances. It's a far cry from the days when he used to reach double figures every season.

Assessing United at the moment, i'm not optimistic about things. Without Ronaldo, we look mediocre so far.

By the way, United have agreed to cancel the contract of young Chinese striker, Dong Fangzhou, and i do believe we will get Berbatov before the deadline.

Just seen this for the 1st time, jesus what was he thinking.

What about O'Shea the dumb f**k who actually thought scholes had scored? :D

Uladh

United have embarked on a wage slashing adventure in recent weeks and i can only hope its to make room for a striker in the wage structure.

Alien gone for next to nothing, sick boy and dong for nothing. all 3 (even alien) could have commanded much better fees in the market place.

some finish by scholes all the same!

The Corporal

Scholes must have been watching Kieran Donaghy against Cork last week and thought he was on the gaelic field! Was some finish alright even if it was a idiotic thing to do

corn02

Stick Scholesey at ff for Armagh and we will be flying.

Rooney was very poor of what I seen - the workrate Tevez got throug hcompared to Rooney was crazy. Just a lull or is something going on?

Roney picked up a virus in Nigeria and was a doubt for the start of the season, I expect he has missed some pre season work and is not at full fitness but is playing since the only alternative is Frazier Campbell. If Berba does sign Rooney may well get a rest, I would not be optimistic about the shape he will be in physically and mentally after two weeks with England. If England get beat in Zagreb ( as I think they will ) the press will be looking for a scapegoat and usually it is a UTD player so it will be either Rooney or Rio to blame. Wes Brown is not high profile enough for the press to slaughter.
