Quote from: tiempo on June 04, 2025, 02:16:03 PMA few pundits have said similar and how I feel also, Tyrone not looking like potential winners but could take anyone out, thats the challenge now, get over Cavan, maybe take a big gun out in a quarter final, at that stage with the tails up and a quality squad many of whom know how to get over the line and 2 games from glory you never know

Armagh look the irresistible force to me at the moment and I just can't hate a team that is so damn good given the journey they've been on, huge respect for what they've done in recent years, bounced back from gut-wrenching defeat and they way McGeeney has developed the squad and kept lads on board - they'd be the ideal team to derail 😉

Armagh do look very good however i dont think they are much ahead of the pack. Beat tyrone by 1 point, beaten by donegal and their 5 point win over dublin was flattering considering dublin gifted them 3 of the 5 points from breaches and the fact that dublin missed everything from scoreable positions.
Rian is a huge factor. He wasn't playing against Tyrone or Donegal. They played Dublin off the field, never looked like losing. I can live with Armagh win All Ireland as long as they don't get up to 4.
Anyone but Derry!.. and Kerry..

Clear as day to win with new rules a team needs:
1. A kickout strategy that works
2. Big mobile men up the middle
3. Good strong shooters
   with brains.

You might say what is new but look at Tyrone in that context

Tyrone fail on 1 ( winning between 30% and (at best) 50%. 66% min. Required Armagh have hit near 90% in some matches this year.

Are dodgy on 2. Middle
Teague good but inexperienced
Brennan anonymous (not the cordinator he might be)
Kennedy injured
Kilpatrick flaky
Donnelly does his best but age and speed against him now
Canavan brilliant moments but overall weak, small and takes fancy options too often.

And Weak on 3. Apart from MCCurry shot selection weak (and he hasn't been fed the he needs often enough) Few 40m+ shots worked 20m in from side line. Shooting lines bad.

To make best of what's available this team?
Morgan
Teague ( move up 2nd half Quinn)
Hampsey
Devlin
Meyler
McKiernan
Harte (O'Donnell)
Kennedy
Kilpatrick
McGeary (?)  (R Canavan - last chance)

Tyrone finding it hard enough currently without trying to play and win with only 14 men !!!!

Easttyrone23

After the u20s all Ireland win Tyrone have won a total of 14 all Ireland titles at senior, u20/21 and minor level since the turn of the century which is the joint most (along with Dublin) in that time period.

Kerry are just behind on 13,
Galway 8,
Cork 6,
Derry 4 (all minor)
Armagh 3,
Mayo 2,
Kildare 2,
And a host of counties have won 1.

I would like to think after Mayo game that we don't bother trying to play Ruairi Canavan at wing forward again, simply didn't work. Moving McGeary who has been back in form and wing back and one of our best players? Crying out for a half forward line and you put Meyler wing back even though he has played all his football at wing forward.

If we can get this out on the field and these replacements coming in, we will be as close as anyone.

People are far too quick to write off players. Ruairi Canavan last chance? What age is he? 21? How long did it take for Darragh to get to where he is? You'll be calling for someone else to come in and replace him and they'll do the exact same thing. Give younger lads a chance.

NotedObserver

Darragh getting a hard time being called weak and small. He's a class act. Quick ball into him and he's one of the best forwards in the country

tiempo

Could Conor Owens offer something at 11 in the mould of John Maher. Good size, mobile, running power, good range of passing and scoring threat?

We need at least one out and out forward on the 40s, 3 generalists/grafters doesn't work

qz

We won 57% of our own kickouts v Armagh (Armagh won 95% of their K outs)
We won 65% of our own kickouts v Donegal (DGL won 63% of their K outs)
We won 62% of our own kickouts v Mayo (Mayo won 75% of their K outs)

The biggest issue is we need to win more of the opposition k outs. as well as improve on our own K out win rate to say 70s. (Armagh 95% could be considered an outlier with the new rules)
Our best sector is on short kick outs where we won 27/29 over the 3 games. Maybe focus on a short K out strategy initially v Cavan.

A couple of decent wing half forwards would help. Daly & Donaghy not showing what is needed for the role over multiple games.

You obviously have not seen Maher in the flesh. A massive man in comparison to Owens.
Owens is a good player surely, no doubt about that.
We need a playmaker at 11. Gets on the ball, plays quality bouncing passes into the inside line, must be athletic and pacy plays capable of taking a score himself.  Not easy found and to be honest, nobody in Tyrone springs to mind bar Peter Harte & Mattie D
Armagh have 3 options - Grugan / Rian / Conaty
Donegal gave Thompson / Murphy
Kerry have O'Shea / Clifford
Galway - Maher and the young lad Thompson looks good even though he is 20. A superb passer he is and gets on the scoresheet all the time
Any other suggestions for Tyrone either in or outside the current set up?

Conor O'Neill, Matthew Quinn or last years U20 number 11 C Devlin. All great foot passers.

Do not know whether you do your own stats of what but in terms of possesion from own kickouts Tyrone did get only 30% against Armagh and just about broke even against Donegal. In any case the point is more needed and it is the old 2 big men problem Tyrone have suffered from for a very long time. Largely solved if Kennedy plays and we find a rangy natural full or even centre half forward. Is McCullagh from 20s on panel now?).Hampsey can supply the required strength with Teague (getting better every game) at the back and Meyler if really fit at his age the intelligent running and passing to open up defenses. But are Morgan's standards slipping? It must be wearing kicking ball to nothing much; not his fault. The Mayo goal at HT was a wind freak it seems but old story of keepers 'l take ball you take man'. Where was corner back?

trileacman

There's a big failure of the management on the kickout strategy. Armagh get a lot of their kickouts away to players who are unmarked through smart movement. It's not like every Armagh kickout is plucked out of the sky. Blaming the half-forwards for it is wrong.

Am I right in thinking big Kennedy who didn't play against Mayo was togged out and took the toss pre-match as if he was playing? I honestly don't get the need for that level of overthink, and for me it part explains the flat performance, mgmt were caught up on nonsense-level superfluous games when the real game was there in front of their face

NotedObserver

Would agree. Thought that was strange myself and presumably Hampsey was in a similar position but he was in the stands. Tyrone have plenty of leaders and it was already online that he wasn't playing
