How can the senior squad get off work to go to Portugal. Thinking of the civil servants / teachers in the squad?
Do the schools have to pay for a substitute teacher to cover for them ?
Do they  get paid when away etc etc ?

Jees! Book a few days off work weeks ahead. It's no big tickle... does not every job accommodate that?!
What happens when they're off sick... what happens when there's a family death.. what happens when they go on honeymoon... the world keeps turning.

Maybe on your contract... obviously most employers a bit more flexible... 'special circumstances' which would be at bosses discretion.

Isn't it in England that if you take kids out of school to go on holiday there's a fine? So you'd imagine a teacher there just couldn't piss off either to go to the  likes of Portugal without consequences.
Teachers here don't know how easier they have it.

Everything shouldn't be about work. There's a shortage of teachers. Being flexible to the rest of people's lives is a good thing.
