There wouldnt be much in kiltane, in Belmullet not a whole lot around the town but it would be common enough at the back end of the mullet ( around eachleim). Kilcommon would have a hard core gaeltacht around Rossport/Carrowteigue where theie secondary school is a long term gaelscoil. Tourmakeady would id imagine have the most natural Irish

I know lads from Belmullet and they haven't a word of Irish in their heads. In fairness Bearna were in the comórtas and there is shag all Irish in Bearna. Apart from them though all the other Galway clubs in the comórtas are Irish speaking areas.

Seafóid! They beat Claregalway en route.

An bhfuil aon gaeilge i mbeal an mhuirthead?

Buíochas le Dia tá neart gaeilge labharta thíos i ngaeltacht Ceathrú Thaidhg.

Tá muis'.... nuair a bhíonn an chigire thart!

Níor fiú aithin sibh nach raibh Amhrán na bhFiann tagtha go ceann scríbe.

Just home from Intermediate &s in Ratoath. What a setup!! Maryland from Westmeath beat Greenlough Derry in the final. Some craic in that clubhouse!

Been checking up on Meath's progress ahead of first round clash to see how their shaping up. According to their HS forum they've gotten hidings from Leitrim and Galway and then only lost by 2 points to Kerry who had 11 of the All-Ireland starting team plus Galvin playing.

Find it strange that I cannot find any mention of this game anywhere else. Is there any truth in it Meath fans? Where did the sudden improvement come from?

which would have made Navan man Francis Beaufort add a new notch to his scale

You must be some craic when you've to turn to the Indo for your 'wit' Juice

Time for clubs to stop paying 1st team managers 10 to 30,000 a year unless their going to take teams at primary & secondary level locally. Cannot expect teachers to do their work forever. Had it too good for 125 years. We're in a recession so I don't think it funny when club managers are paid and children, teenagers, players and volunteers suffer because of cutbacks

All of a sudden Pat Kenny has an interest in GAA?
I only ever remember him interviewing Graham Geraghty and Paddy Cullen to get the scoop on some smut gossip and lies.

I'd be a bit suspicious he's got a squatters eye on Croke Park.

Tony Boyle? Are you havin a laugh? 2 Ulster, an All-Ireland and played in at least 2 league finals. How did he come to play for a weaker county?

He should seek advice from his union rep........

...... the bathroom mirror

Having read extracts from his book in National newspapers and taken notice of his angles I sometimes wonder is player welfare he has in mind or just a personal hatred of County Boards and their members?

Every county has its pioneer pin fossil delegates but that's life, they're nominated by clubs and elected at county level democratically. He's no hero himself, should be able to take a bit of criticism in his position.

Now that the Kerry County final is over will they be attending trials in Oz as planned or is it too late now given that the championship dragged out?

Hardstation

"Watched this programme on TG4 tonight called Oireachtas na Gaeilge or something. It was all in Irish. No subtitles or English option. What are these knuckle-draggers at?"

How do you propose these 'knuckle draggers subtitle a live programme?

Greatest car crash of a comment yet. Well done!

I don't know you but I heard enough of you during the Summer Months to have an opinion. I am not the only one in these circles to have this opinion and after hearing enough complaining in Gaeltacht circles I thought it relevant enough for a thread discussion as is done regularly regarding Canning, Morrissey, Carty, Rourke and co.

"I'm from a  area and one of a few reporters on the station who aren't a Gaeltacht native. I can only presume that a wider variety of dialects can only appeal to a greater audience."

Eoin Ó Murchú, Eagraí Polaitíochta RTÉ is an English man born and raised he needn't use this as a defence as his Irish is outstanding. If you use this a defence the Irish you have now is the same Irish you'll have in 5 years time like Goggins. From a personal point of view being raised in Dublin by Gaeltacht parents my Irish growing up was obviously not as good a my cousins but I ask questions, memorize nice and useful phrases and ask people to repeat and explain since I was 9 years of age. Even now in my late 30's I do this and will forever. This obviously is a personal choice, I'm sure you have your own ways and means, but I don't need it to build gable walls on a building site you get paid to speak Irish and we pay to listen to you if we want to get an update from the game you're covering.

In comparison to Goggins you are relatively new to this job and have scope for improvement. I may have been harsh in my criticism of you but I was being honest. My real gripe I suppose is that RnaG hired you with a well below standard of the language. Goggins has a country mile on you in that regard as we both know.

We both know dialect has nothing to do with bad grammar and incorrect sentence structure.

Are Alan Milton, Cathal Moore, Jarlath Burns, Brian Cody, Dónal O'Grady, Brian Mullins, Eamonn Fitzmaurice or Paul Galvin from Gaeltacht areas? No, yet they more than cumasach 'dhóthain to please the snob ;)

You are a journalist & if I were you I wouldn't be turning down bread and butter gigs either but for the love  of God please prove me wrong in Months and years to come. I'll be the first to come on here and celebrate your success. Ros na Rún characters were killed off in the past because viewers complained of standard of the language. Make sure you're still there when competition presents itself in the Midlands.

You quite rightly pointed out the legend and talent that went and goes before you at spórt RnaG therefore I'm sure you feel an obligation to reach a certain standard.
Books won't do it for you but listening and speaking will.

Togha Fir...

"It's true we're not just talking about minor grammatical transgressions, more that they're howlers"

Thank you Fear ón Srath Bán

I wasn't blessed with your skills of summarization. That's more or less the exact point I am trying to make

Lads I'd just like to point out that having been reading this message board on and off for a few years that I have seen a huge amount of threads critical of RTE television and Radio commentators and pundits. Not only in their knowledge of games, agenda's or opions, but for being boring, poor at their jobs and bad speakers.

So far all I can figure out is that I am a snob because of some 'unwritten rule' to do with Irish?

I love to see people trying and learning, it warms my heart as someone who was brought up in Dublin through Irish. Here's an example of what I'm talking about a frequent one of Goggins' and ye can tell me if it would be acceptable if used by Kevin McStay 10 times during a championship game

bhuail sé ar a cos clé é

he hit it on her left foot

I also believe that it is TG 4's responsibility to request a better service from Nemeton Productions

Dialect has nothing to do with the above.

With regards to my being a 'snob' I think you'll find I did admit that Iwas highly excited when he got the job 5 years ago. It's a paid job in a public service provider, as a tax payer I would like to see some improvement just as I would in a politician, road infrastructure, Education, health service etc.

5 years later am I really a snob for pointing this out?
