GAA Discussion / 'Physicality'
March 24, 2013, 04:45:04 PM
This is the 'tactical fouling' video the FRC used at Congress.
Would anyone seriously suggest that cracking down on this stuff somehow makes the game less manly?

GAA Discussion / DCU bending the rules again?
March 16, 2013, 01:59:20 PM

Men's Football Club allocated over €40,000 for coaching expenses

Three members of the DCU Sigerson Cup management team were allocated funding by the Club Life Committee, the College View has learned.

The CLC funding policy states that they will cover only two coaches per team, henceforth the Men's Football Club are in breach of this.

Figures show that the club was allocated €40,433.60 for coaching expenses, amounting to 88% of their CLC grant allocation.

The Sigerson Cup management team of Niall Moyna, Tony Diamond and Mick Bohan all received funding for their roles with the defeated semi-finalists.

A magnificent player who is regularly overlooked when people are compiling their best player lists.
A 2 time all star, the Kevin O'Brien of his era.
Imagine if Tipperary had him available now?

Half-time now.
Dr Crokes 0-11, Castlehaven 0-4.
Crokes look a very tidy outfit.
Not up against much though.
Castlehaven offer very little going forward.

GAA Discussion / Daft reasons for missing games
June 04, 2012, 01:21:06 PM
Michael Dara MacAuley missed the game yesterday because he fell off his bike during the week.
He also missed a game last year because he nearly choked to death on a bit of chicken.
Any other famously daft reasons for players missing a championship game?
Like the two Waterford hurlers there recently that burned their feet during cryotherapy and are out for two months as a result.

GAA Discussion / Championship marketing
May 09, 2012, 10:40:42 PM
Having heard a lot about the big marketing push that was going to happen this year I must say the latest ad on RTE is terribly lifeless and  insipid.
A load of junior c footballers running around in front of a smoke machine while Ger Canning and Marty Morrissey do their 'thing' in the background.

ATTENTION RTE!
You used to do this stuff pretty well.
Just run these 3 ads every year and I'll be happy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO6GoXUQT7Y&feature=relmfu

p.s. Does anyone else think it a bit weird that the first time RTE ran ads for the Allianz leagues was the week before the hurling FINAL i.e. when the leagues were over?
Bizarre.

GAA Discussion / Yellow card fever
March 18, 2012, 11:08:48 PM
I saw a man booked today without having made any contact whatsoever with the player he was supposed to have fouled.
Tellingly, the general reaction of the crowd around me was to sigh and roll their eyes as if to say "Sure this is the way the game has gone".
Defenders are picking up yellow cards for nothing in the first 15 minutes which severely impacts on their ability to do their job for the rest of the game as one false move and they're gone.
Once a player from either side has been dismissed in this fashion the rest of the players then have free reign to half kill each other for the remainder of the game as the ref bizarrely doesn't want to be seen as having lost control.
It's obvious that the refs are acting under instructions but it's really sucking the life out of games at this stage.
I was watching the first Meath-Kildare replay in '97 the other night.
Men going hell for leather for every ball, no one giving an inch and 100% commitment from every player on either side, safe in the knowledge that you weren't going to get a soft yellow card.
Is it possible to get that back or has the game now moved beyond that point?

GAA Discussion / RTE & the GAA
March 15, 2012, 10:28:27 PM
Another story that portrays the GAA in a negative light on Primetime this evening.
It's either no coverage or negative coverage the last couple of months.
Are they going out of their way to put the boot in?

GAA Discussion / Kilkenny county board and football
February 29, 2012, 10:42:54 PM
'Louth had a record breaking 6-35 to 0-2 win over Kilkenny in Ballyragget. The Cats had no substitutes as 11 of their players didn't turn up on the night.'

http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=163026

What is to be done with them?
Fair enough they're not that interested but there's a difference between apathy and going out of your way to be absolutely useless at a game.
Was it ever any different?

in conjunction with a few high-profile twitter devotees.
Does this represent the harsh reality as far as you and the GAA members you know are concerned?
I think it's all a bit daft to be honest.
Typical silly season stuff.

I'm sure Westmeath people are delighted to have him back.
Serious player (if a bit hot-headed).
This is another cautionary tale for young lads that think paradise awaits in the AFL.
As Joni always said, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone."

GAA Discussion / Meath v Kildare (March 3rd)
February 18, 2012, 01:44:26 PM
This is the big one folks.
Should be a massive crowd in Navan.
I love the night-time games myself.
Kildares powers seem to be waning as the curse of Seanie takes hold.
Either that or its an elaborate ruse to lull us into a false sense of security (the sly dogs).
Either way, they'll be well up for this game and as the 4th best team in the country should win handily.
I just hope all the Meath players born and reared in Meath and proud to wear their county jersey, give a good account of themselves
And no, this shouldn't be in the division 2 thread.

GAA Discussion / The standard of GAA journalism
February 11, 2012, 02:59:04 PM
Listening to Eugene McGee there on Newstalk.
I think I aged 5 years in the space of 5 minutes.
He's the most dour man on planet earth plus he doesn't know the names of half the players out there.
He was going on about Jim McGuinness having to retire at the age of 30 when he meant Kevin Cassidy.
Then he goes, "Not him... d'other fella."
He was talking about Tipperarys 'PE man' (Dr Cian O'Neill) that left for Mayo as well.
God almighty we are very poorly served by the people that are paid to cover our games.

Lads, need a decent sized hurling or football pic from an intercounty game, preferably in Croke Park.
Anyone know of any good ones?
It's for the background on a powerpoint slide.
The more action packed the better.
