are there any here that have run a marathon?
I am trying to do one and training hard but shagged after an 18 mile run, despite having ran afew 18 milers in recent weeks, any tips?
Another 8 miles after the first 18 is barely imaginable at present and I have entered the dublin run in october (next month).
Thanks

you must be fairly fit lad, the last thing i would want to be do after running 18 miles is get laid. fair play to ye !!
never run one myself but a couple of mates have done 3 0r 4 and if your running 18 mile a month before the race your bang on target. i remember asking asking the question how another 8 is possible but apparently on race day it just happens, with the whole adrenaline thing and hundreds of other runners around ye it just comes natural. Good luck

I did the Dublin marathon in 2002. If you are currently doing 18 milers you'll finish it no problem. Ye hit the wall between 18-22 miles, if your struggling walk a bit and the start running again, through the sheer knowledge that there is only 4 miles remaining you'll find a second gear and fly home.

Take plenty of fig rolls ;D

I think you are right Hoof, as far as I remember, my mate has run 3 or 4 marathons and the most miles he has ever ran before the big day is 20. Adrenaline gets you through on the day!!!!

Mentalman

You're going well, most people would train to about 20 miles 2 or 3 weeks before the event and scale it back from there. You're flying.

Don't be peaking too soon though...

Bad runs like that could be to do with hydration, how much fuel you have on board and what fuel you do take on board while you run the 18 miles. There are a good few gels you can take but I'd assume you know that anyway.

(Also if you're tired or something like that it wouldn't help)

Zapatista

Fair balls to ye. Ye doing a fundraiser with it?

How did you get on in the end?

Considering doing the London Marathon in April. Good friend putting me under pressure to do it with him, he has even completed the form for me!! (doing it through a Irish Travel firm, so guarnateed spot, flights, accomodation etc).

I've always said I'd do one and he is calling my bluff now. He has done one and is also doing the New York in November.

Would be in average shape and my fitness level has always been good despite the obvious gut and chin!! Stamina was always good. April seems shocking soon. Would have to be a few changes after the turkey has passed through the system.

Always wanted to run a marathon myself but people say it isn't conducive to playong football at the same time in that it can dcrese your speed and strength levels while playing. When I do hang up the boots though the first thing on my list will be to run a marathon!

That would fit my bill, played very little last year and hope to play none next year (turned 33 today). More involved in administration and coaching at present and if truth be told I wouldn;t be missed too much on the playing field  ;D

Running mate is Ex-Intercounty to about two years ago and is winding down his club career, last year will prob be his last (once a championship is won!!). He said he's not touching a ball till after London.

I did 5 miles in the gym last night. I'm delighted with myself.

Jesus IMO, Id imagine you'd that have that much more endurance that of the course of the game that you would have compensatied for the slight lack of speed n strength.
Pull hard and early

Nah speed endurance is the key for football/hurling. Being able to run 26 miles at a steady pace is of no real use to you as in Gaelic you can find yourself doing up to 40/50 sprints over a period of 70 minutes say. Maybe you are right but I'm not going to chance it.
