The whole Mandelson appointment saga would suggest that, underneath it all, he lacked something in integrity. The Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco never really went away. The Mandelson thing was totally baffling, apart from the possible motivation that it would take a well known British spiv to deal with the American spiv.

As I heard somewhere not so long ago, Starmer's profile is of someone who spent his entire life dreaming about becoming PM, but he never seemed to dream about what he'd do when he actually got there. The Tories basically handed him a two term ticket and he was pissing it against the wall with passive inactivity.

The consensus coming out of the election in 2024 was that Labour's enormous majority was broad, but very shallow, i.e. they won a lot of seats but not by huge margins and a relatively minor swing could drastically reshape the landscape again.

I don't think anyone expected them to fumble the bag quite so badly inside two years though.

Burnham will have a maximum of three years to get ready for the next election. That's what he'll be doing from (the reset) Day 1. Trying to actually achieve anything will always play second fiddle to playing politics and focusing on Operation Beat Farage.

This will entail yet another change of government, in which the electorate will have absolutely no say.

It's a slightly different issue but, at Stormont the number of co-options is extremely high. It's rapidly becoming a revolving door & again, the voters get no say in who represents them.

The political classes have rigged the entire system for their own ends & to hell with the opinions of ordinary people.

These party "focus groups" appear to be a substitute for properly engaging with people & assessing popular opinion.

Then they even wonder why politicians & their "advisors" are held in such low regard?
