The Department of Health is currently running a public consultation on the development of a new Public Health Bill relating to public health emergencies.

Policy underpinning the Public Health Bill (Northern Ireland) - Consultation

Date of issue: 5 July 2024
Action required: Responses by 14 October

Scary proposals being considered in this public health consultation document yet the only MLA making noises about it is the DUP's Paul Frew (also Aontus Gemma Brolly).

Astonishing levels of over reach. Speaks volumes of our representatives that so little is being said about it. Fair play to Frew for sticking his head above the parapet. I don't agree with his views but I am fully aligned on this one.

It's flying under the radar. Not sure why politicians are not making a big deal of it. Probably can't be bothered  to read all of the document.

P. 47?

So im guessing you boys are quite comfortable with a few Typhoid Marys showing in the pub or teaching your kids?

I get that, but these are enforceable measures and that is overreach.

Say all you like about the Covid vaccines, but it was still a voluntary action. This goes way beyond that.

Sometimes enforcement is needed.

Not getting the alarmism here about the proposed bill, at least based on p. 47. If there is something else in there, please point it out.

The enforcement (pre hindsight) would have been needed during Covid if this policy was in place then.

Thousands of people  were left with side affects from  the vaccine , yet they're trying to pass   this , so same people will be held down and given more of them?

Hmm, seems fair enough.

How would things have worked differently?

I take it you lads will be just fine with no restrictions or mandates if and when, say, one of the lethal viral haemorrhaggic fevers shows up in your community?

Perhaps the new policy should just give the option of staying at home and not spreading disease. I think though that the mé féiners wouldn't want that either.

Should I be forced to take a vaccine? No.

Should I not be allowed to travel on shared transport or go to a shared space without a vaccine? Yes.

Being forced to do something against my will, I find that unacceptable, but with that decision comes implications and if those implications means I can't do things due to a lack of a vaccine then that's on me if it's for the greater public health need.

The way I see it we should be very careful in relation to the concession of current rights and freedoms for the so called greater good. We need to be always mindful of un-intended consequences. History has schooled us well in the dangers of surrendering personal autonomy. A sensible balance needs to be struck. The growth of parent/child style government is very disturbing.

George Orwell published Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949. It seems that many are forgetting the warning signals in that book of creeping totalitarianism and the importance of protecting individual rights and freedoms.
