Ah fair enough, theres a conversation to be I had I was wrong. Was thinking you'd try and compare him to Pep ffs

I can't wait to learn why Guardiola wouldn't be considered one of the greatest managers of all time.
Can think of 114 reasons or so :D

Quote from: tiempo on November 02, 2026, 10:18:56 AMIf you boil it down, Fergie was the cheat code in respect to their sporting success, and it was Fergie's greed and hubris that brought on the current debacle, crazy he was still taking £40k a week from the club as an ambassador until last year, greedy bugger

I don't begrudge him for them money he got paid. I'm certain he was underpaid relative to his success through his managerial career - relative to his success and his peers. I just wish he hadn't fallen out with those scumbags M&M which precipitated the Glazer takeover. Greatest soccer manager of all time but like us all - imperfect.

is he though? Certainly up there anyway
Not even a conversation.

clearly is a conversation
Ah come on. Who even comes close?
Stein. Ancelotti. Lobanovsky.

Because his three jobs have been 'easy'. He took over, and improved admittedly, elite, winning sides. Ferguson got the United job because of his success at Aberdeen. Clough worked his way up from Hartlepool. Wenger started in Japan. Ancelotti at Reggiana. Mourinho at Leiria.

That's harsh on Pep, do we expect him to have said no to Barca and earn his stripes in the lower divisions? Of course not, he was trusted young. But the building at a smaller club isn't there.

Pep's first success in management was in the fourth tier of Spanish football. Won Tercera Division and came through playoffs to get Barca B promoted to the Segunda B.

He managed the Barca youth side and got promoted. Not the same thing as working your way up.

But even if we count that as job 4. Not exactly Hartlepool.

Imagine using this warped thought process for any other evaluation taken in life.

"I don't care if you were handpicked and fast-tracked as a surgeon in your university days for your skilled hands, attention to detail and unusually deep medical knowledge - I wouldn't want you operating on me unless you can prove you have won fights with drunks at A&E".

A very good racing car driver being given the keys to a Ferrari while the other drivers are in Mondeos, the very odd one in a Porsche and winning just a few Euro Drivers Championships, though cleaned up domestically

What Ferguson did at Aberdeen followed (eventually) with Utd is some achievement

Who's the best? Depends on what you like, not necessarily trophies won or ratios to trophies or leagues
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

There's also the inescapable and undeniable fact that Pep completely and utterly changed football. Ferguson did not.

Again, not arguing one or the other, but "who even comes close?" is such a f**king stupid thing to ask.

Del Bosque won leagues, champions leagues, the Euros and the World Cup. But sure it's not even a conversation.

Gallsman you're an aggressive character. Why so much anger ?

tonto1888

Pep is a very good manager regardless of who he managed and when.
Ancelotti is up there also. Stein. Paisley. Shankly. Clough. Whoever mentioned del bosque that was also a good shout tho you prob wouldn't get him in any conversations

tonto1888

Mourinho won titles in 4 different countries. Champions leagues with 3 different teams including Porto who he also won the UEFA Cup with.

An we haven't really looked at anything beyond the 80s. Stein being the exception.
