Maybe so but as ex manager I don't think he's the man to say it. Showing his class.

I don't disagree with anything he said, but it will hit a bit more coming from him. There was always going to be a pile on, the point is the team will be completely written off now (rightly so you might say), but we need to use that to bring a performance the next day.

I definitely feel we throw away far too many games from strong winning positions. Seen someone list them: 2023 AI semi, league games last year v Kerry, Donegal, Galway. Championship last year v Galway. Monaghan this year. 2023 league final we did our best to throw it away. 2024 championship v Mayo the same.

His ego really comes across in those videos. Shows a lack of loyalty to people that gave him absolutely everything too. I don't think it is calling a spade a spade though, it's lack of squad depth is the issue not character and that's mostly Gallaghers fault. I thought the main men that played over 100 minutes showed a lot of character to get themselves into a winning position in the last seconds of extra time despite what happened at end of normal time. I was sure we'd fold like a deck of cards in extra time but we didn't.

Quote from: Topmarks on May 05, 2026, 05:49:33 PMPlenty of things said about the players the past couple of days from outside the camp. McManus says we're done and wont recover, Gallagher says we're soft etc. If this doesn't light a fire under them nothing will. I'd imagine some home truths will be laid out in Owenbeg this week. The video doesn't lie and some boys need called out in-house for hiding when the pressure came on.

They need to take it on the chin, bring a siege mentality to the Athletic grounds in a couple of weeks and put a few ghosts and big mouths to bed. It just takes one big win to turn this on its head and this team are good enough and won enough to get over this.
Calling boys out?

Your on the wrong forum pal, can't be at that. Sure they've delivered in the past so that's them covered for any of this calling out stuff.

"In-house"

If only you'd kept reading 🤣🤣
So only people within the squad/ management team can give opinions? Makes sense I suppose, probably does away with all punditry and sports journalism but!

In the same scenario does that mean only people who played to certain level should be qualified to talk?
Any level? At all?

Ah lads, did we not have 14 men play 80+ mins? I doubt any other team in the championship comes close to that this year. A big ask in championship football

Interstellar

Its 3 years since Gallagher managed the team. How many new players have the next 3 managers developed and brought to the starting 15. In fairness when he saw underage talent he brought them into the squad, sometimes to the detriment of u20s. You can hardly blame him now for the current lack of squad depth. Given the unlikely possibility of him managing a team again he probably feels liberated to say what he wants. At least he still has an interest in what is going on with a team he once managed.

Ryan O you work away lad if it keeps you happy 🙌

Interstellar

How come we have heard nothing from Derry management since this game ended? I've seen every manager interviewed winners and losers over last weekend. Media silence from Derry.

Wildweasel74

If anybody went to league games this year you seen how little time players were getting, i seen R Mulholland play on sunday and hes more than good enough for county level, think i saw him 10mins against Armagh last yr and 5/10mins in another game. Didnt play 1 nfl game from what i remember this year.

tbrick18

who's still out injured?
Lynch, Higgins, Downey(s)?
Servant but he's untested as yet.
Mcgurk Just returning from injury I think.
theres a few to strengthen the bench.
what about u20s....who all was drafted in?

Point I'm making is that all isn't lost yet.
I do think it was a mistake to not use the bench more against monaghan, but players on the field made mistakes even in the first half when we dominated, so we lost due to a number of small things, not any massive lack of players or management issues. A bit of luck, a bit more composure and we win that game and none of these discussions are happening.
I'm not sure this group will get back to the level of 23/24 but we're capable of beating anyone when everything is going well.
Hard to expect all the issues of the last couple of years to be fixed in a few months so let's give them a break.

I just think it's nothing to do with players on the bench. Management, in my opinion, just do not trust them or think they're good enough. That's a serious trust issue which doesn't help relationships within a panel group. Some lad who is wrecked after playing goes back on again. What are the players on bench thinking?

I haven't saw RG's take on the game but Parkinson dissected the last few minutes of the game and it wasn't a great look in fairness. His take on it was you'd have thought Derry were a few points down, rather than a few points up. Then a catalogue of simple mistakes. Basically game management and seeing the game out.

Gallagher is out of the Derry job three years, don't think lack of squad depth in 2026/ current management bringing players off and back on can be blamed on Gallagher. Since Gallagher left they have also went to Division 2 which should have afforded more of an opportunity to develop a few players.

Derry may not have folded like a deck of cards but a more ruthless side would have won that game pulling up in normal time or composed themselves and got the job done in extra time.  Man for man Derry are a better side talent wise than Monaghan and should be in an Ulster final.

Is the small bit of hope the fact we came out in extra time managed to take the lead and looked relatively in control. And as stated above its the same 15 men we turn to and some weren't having their best day.

Until the last minute.

There was another decision that I though very harsh and had big impact was Niall Toner being pulled for touching the ball on the ground. He definitely didn't, spilled it and it hit him right on the toe and shot out for what should have been a line ball.

A horrible melt down by Derry. Complete panic on the pitch and on the line both in normal time and again in ET. There was absolutely no calm among the management, up roaring at one another, no-one in control. Naturally this spills on to the pitch.

As for RG and his social media inputs. For the life of me I cannot understand why he is doing this? Is it attention seeking, ego, desperation? I dunno.

I'd assumed people are paying him to do video analysis and this gives him then platform to promote his knowledge.

Yes I had heard he is in the background with both Down and Westmeath.
Still though, I don't see what the social media stuff does for him apart from making people dislike him even more?
