Quote from: tyrone08 on June 15, 2026, 08:51:13 AMI like the hooter but the current rule this year results in the last 3 mins of each half being lost as teams keep the ball to have the last shot. Preferred last year rule when the ball had to go dead after the hooter rather than the game being automatically over. Added far more excitement and allowed another chance for teams

Plus this year there is no way you can get the ref watch, clock in the ground and tv clock to match exactly which just adds to the confusion.

Tell that to Aidan Forker!

still cant get my head round that

Not sure its too difficult to implement a device via bluetooth or whatever that is in sync with the referee's watch and the scoreboards, would surely put to bed the cries of when its meant to be over, by the ref, and when its meant to be over by the teams

Brain fart. Everyone, even the most experienced players, have them now and again.

sad but true. That said, we could have had the game dead and buried by then. Anyway, on to Kerry

Last year's rule definitely seems to be the better hooter rule.

I'd vote for a switch back to that.

However I doubt the powers-that-be will be willing to admit they made things worse with the new rule so I think it may be a while before they change back.

Didn't they literally change it this year in response to complaints about it last year?

Last years version with a rule that it has to go over the oppositions goal line? Wide or score.

People naturally don't like certain rules when it goes against them ;)

For me it's a big no the hooter, I didn't see timekeeping as a problem in recent years, refs were okay to add on 5, 6, 7 ,8 minutes accordingly and end the game 'organically' on the last play.
Timekeeping in recent years was not such a problem that needed a fix and the hooter is not an improvement, it just adds more technocratic complexity.

I think the GAA has to take away a lot from the referee's control at inter-county level to make it easier for him/her.

Really, with a team of 10 officials, why is there not a desinated person on the sideline not taking the score? Instead ref. has to write it down in a wee black book then get set for kick out/puck out etc. Bit silly in my opinion.

The referee has enough to worry about.

Related to the hooter can anyone tell me where the official rule is as to what ends the game and unless I'm blind why it's not in the rulebook.

What happens when there is a free kick to be taken is covered but I can't find what happens in normal play.

My understanding is that the game ends either when a ball in flight goes dead or on the next touch. Certainly there was some talk of that last year after Armagh v Tyrone in the league. But that could be wrong.

The point is I can't see in the rule book what ends the game. I would have thought that was fundamental to the use of the hooter.
