I'm guessing this is a tongue in cheek comment. :)

Match fixing probably not the best advert for the guy

As someone who has had past issues with gambling, Ive not a second of time for the fella.

Higgins got caught match fixing red handed and only because of who he was he got away with it.

Was Stephen Lee's punishment more severe.

Solo_run

Wasn't Higgins cleared of Match fixing?

imtommygunn

It was pretty much a sting operation from one of those tabloid newspapers from what I could gather.

Milltown Row2

Aye but it wasn't a good look, he said he'd do certain frames and so on, but it was the News of The World sting so couldn't believe them too ffs!
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Was the video not heavily edited to portray Higgins in the worst possible light? They got hold of the full, unedited version and found he actually refused to throw frames, but that is a video we are probably never going to see.

Was banned I think for not revealing it but I think the News Of the World got the story out there first?

As they say, there is no smoke without fire, and shit sticks, so either there was word of him at it possibly and they tried to smoke him out or he didn't and was unfortunate that they just picked him out of all the players to do this nasty publication on him...

Did he sue they after all that?

He told them how to and when to fix frames, who to do it against, told them he had property in Spain and they could pay off his mortgage so the payment wouldn't show in his accounts.

He said he played along after being caught as he thought they had links to the Russian Mafia.

He was banned for 6 months for the lesser charge of "giving the impression he would breach betting rules". Also fined 75k and 10k in costs.

I don't think he did and wanted to put it all behind him.

The problem with the video is that it is heavily edited; we do not see what, if anything, prompts him to start talking about match-fixing. He didn't say what he would do; he talked about how frames could be fixed. The snooker governing body requested the full video from News of the World; they watched it, had it checked, and when Higgins was asked to throw frames, he said no, he wouldn't do it. The full unedited version was never released, and we only have the investigation committee's comments to go on - whether you want to believe that or not is up to you. On the one hand, Higgins was #1 at the time, and having your top player involved in a scandal would have been damaging for the sport, so he could have been protected. Or take it for what it is, he has received his punishment and move on. I think that was the only time he has received any sort of punishment and has maintained a clean record. Irrespective of the scandal, he has won multiple championships based on his ability alone - enjoy watching while he, Williams, O'Sullivan, etc., are all still about.

Anyway, back to this year's Championship...

Allen's match heading for a tight conclusion

Ronnie always seems to get the toughest draws, but that's usually when he plays his best snooker. It should make for some very entertaining matches in the opening round.
