Almost time to throw in again, as always it's one of the very best competitions in the sport. We should beat Leitrim but beyond that everyone else has a shot at making the final. Sligo have to come good at underage at some point with all those good college teams they've produced and Mayo and Galway's records speak for themselves.

Preliminary Round

18th March - Galway v Sligo - Tuam Stadium F. Flynn(L) 4pm

Semi-Finals

23rd March - Roscommon v Leitrim - Kiltoom - S. Hehir(G)   4.30pm

23rd March - Mayo v Prelim rd winners - MacHale Park/ Tuam Stadium   P. Neilan(R)   4pm

Connacht Final
6th April

All Ireland semi final
20th April - Connacht winners v Leinster winners

Just had a look back there and these were the results in 2010:

Quarter-Finals
9 May 2010 Galway 5-18 - 1-03 New York
26 June 2010 Mayo 1-11 - 0-11 Roscommon

Semi-Finals
27 June 2010 Galway 0-13 - 0-09 Sligo
3 July 2010 Mayo 2-12 - 1-07 Leitrim

Final
18 July 2010 Mayo 3-09 - 1-10 Galway

Both teams beat Leinster opposition in the QF and lost out in the SFs. I think that Galway side were miles ahead in the SF and let Cork back into it late on?? Or was that some other year?

O'Connor and Kirby likely to be the main men for Mayo - anyone know who else is involved?? Or how they're shaping up?? Anyone who might get a chance here and make the step up to senior this year??

#2
Adam Gallagher was immense for the minors last year and more than talented enough to make an immediate step up.

For us the forward line that took us to the AI final last year is intact with Donie Smith and Colin Compton (already senior panelists and starters) and Cian Connolly. Players like Donie's brother Enda and Thomas Corcoran could be rightly expected to make the immediate step up from minor as well. We've plenty of other returnees but I doubt our gaze right now extends beyond Leitrim and a shot at retaining the Connacht title for the first time.

Cian Connolly who starred for Oran on their run to the junior Connacht final last November, losing to the eventual AI champions.

We kicked more wides than scores against Mayo that year O'Connor scored 1-6 of the 1-11. It was the year Galway let a big lead slip Mayo did almost the same against Tyrone.
The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Whoops, not the first time I've confused the two - I was thinking of Michael Gunning for Oran and a minor last year (is he overage this year, actually?) and Cian Connolly is the Ros Gaels U21 corner forward from last year's team. Out-played Smith and Compton against Dublin in the final to boot.

I remember that minor match in Salthill the day the seniors blew a big lead to only get a draw, thankfully winning the replay. We were terribly naive but had our chances. We should have every chance in this championship.

Indeed that was the year we surrendered a 9 point lead to Cork in the second half of the AI semi final.
While teams should be able to shut up shop enough to hold onto a 9 point lead in the 2nd half of a game, truth be told Cork deserved to win that game.
As I watched the game and even as we went that far in front - the way the play had been going I had a sneaking feeling they would come back.

Anyhow Peadar og o Griofa who was the standout forward on that team has just torn his cruciate in the last few weeks so his absence will be a big blow to the team. I have heard very little about this years team as regards what players are on the panel etc so it's hard to know how they will do.
Taking the last 3 years minor teams into account though I would expect Mayo and Ros to be stronger than us this year.

Lads, would you two not just meet up somewhere like the middle of the Shannon and work out your differences.

Doesn't always work out like that. Galway won U21 Connacht/All Ireland in 2011 when 2008,2009,2010 minor connacht titles were all won by Mayo.
