Quote from: rodney trotter on November 03, 2025, 01:34:08 PMFormer Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey has been jailed for five-and-a-half years for defrauding people by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for treatment
First Kilkenny hurler to do 5 in a row.

The sentence is well deserved. However, I do not understand it. There are people that are never did anything for themselves but who attempt to leech off others from day 1. However, Carey was a person who could put in time to train and build toward something, he may have been talented but this was never easy.
Owing to his fame, he could have made an honest buck in sales, having ghost written articles in the paper etc. He got more from the fraud than from regular work, but he didn't get enough to retire in Brazil and jail was the inevitable and predictable outcome. Very strange.

It's a mythological tragedy. The boy who got too close to the sun.
He lived the high life before the crash. He thought he deserved it.

They had a home in Monkstown, on Dublin's south side, and a chalet in the Swiss Alps.

Carey's pursuit of great riches had led to this precipice. In 2011, in the maw of the economic crash, the commercial court issued a judgment of €9.5 million against Carey and Newman. What he did next destroyed his life and severely wounded the lives of tens of others who were grotesquely scammed.

On the day Ulster football lost a true legend to Cancer in Nudie Hughes.  DJ got what he deserves ripping people off and pretending to have cancer. What a horrible individual.

That doesn't explain the Carey family situation though. His brother and sister are up on money laundering charges as well. Where it all began could hide far darker secrets.

Captain Scarlet

He could have had his name on a pub, a SuperValu and all sorts but he chose another way.
Like surely there were easier ways to get some coin, so he obviously got a kick out of it all.
them mysterons are always killing me but im grand after a few days.sickenin aul dose all the same.

Saffrongael

I see the Irish Examiner reporting today the GPA gave him €30k in 2022
Let no-one say the best hurlers belong to the past. They are with us now, and better yet to come

Bord na Mona man

For all of his adult life he'd have constantly met by back slappers telling him what a great fella he is.
It's easy to become more self-centred and egotistical.

Dag Dog

I watched the Prime Time documentary there. In many ways he's a complete simpleton, in other ways he is completely devious.

Truthsayer

Not right in the head... like a sociopath. Was never going to get away with that. Lived like tomoro with it's consequences will never come.
Is horrendous behaviour.

Lots of players get that. Doesn't explain the family.

I think he was a victim of time. He was the first hurling player to become a celebrity, and worse a celtic tiger celebrity. Hurlers were well known before, but they weren't partying with other celebs and hitting the gossip pages. Then the business ideas floated and the sense of entitlement kicked in.

Yeah. He got in over his head and wanted to stay living the high life. Celtic tiger money, property bubble etc he wasn't the only one who got stung during that time. There were people willing to help him too he didn't need to scam anyone.

The fact that he got on the late late to give his fake story shows how people were willing to give him their time and listen. He had built up a lot of good will. Perhaps there was a sense of shame about his failings as a businessman. Perhaps it's the same for his siblings but I don't know about them.

The whole thing just makes me sad. I didn't get to see many genuine sporting legends in the flesh growing up. Even though he was up against the Galway hurlers who I would be supporting, he was a different level of class. Such a shame, but he's getting what he deserves for his actions.
It won't be the next manager but the one after that Meath will become competitive again - MO'D 2016

Good summation.  I'd echo the sentiments here.  Just a sad, sad story, from every perspective.
